Tried this for a business lunch. Would have been a bit more comfortable in the main atrium rather than the small loud inner dining room. I would have rated the restaurant higher but for our waiter who while handling the busy lunch crowd would only pause to help us as he practically ran past tables. A very parkour approach to table service.
Perhaps I mis-ordered as one menu feature is any salad with a host of protein toppers, which was tempting.
The roast chicken, which I would presume is a specialty, was bland and sadly dry. So I mostly left it, making the $24 price a bit steep for a bite of chicken and plate of french fries.
My table mates kept it simple with sandwiches, the pulled pork and a ham and cheese, which were utilitarian and fine. So the hunt continues. I am still seeking a fun or swanky West LA spot with really memorable food for business lunches.
The tasting menu and wine pairing was excellent . The scallop crudo was very tender; the best scallops that I have ever had. The service was great; our waiters were very attentive. We were there on a Tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised to hear very good live music and singing at the bar. I highly recommend this restaurant.
6 of us dined at The Roost. All of our meals were delicious. Two people ordered the Dine LA menu. Since there was so much food they shared bites with the rest of us. The rest of us opted for the regular menu and had halibut and black cod as our main courses. We also ordered the octopus which was perfect as were the asparagus. They were tender and cooked just right.
Our hostess was very nice and gave us 2 glasses of rose. She also gave us a nice table but then our waiter was not very friendly which was a bit off putting. The food was not served as anticipated. The fois gras I ordered was warm and practically melting on top of a sweet sauce that was tasty but was far too much . Notably the arugula salad was quite good. They didn't have a menu for kids either but we got by with basic pasta with cheese. Not the most inventive. Wine served was average and the waiter served us the wrong glasses stating mine was the reisling but after taking just a tiny sniff could tell it was the Chardonnay my husband had ordered. Relating to dessert, they had a waffle on the menu but we're told they were out of it. As it was the first serving of dinner I inquired as to how it could be that they were out of it already. Our new waitress, why we had a new one I don't know why, said it was actually probably going to be taken off the menu because they've been out for a few days now. Oh and let me say we couldn't find our original waiter when it was time for dessert. In addition, the GM was obliviant to what was going on. We were however pleasantly surprised after ordering a dessert (Nutella crime brûlée, which is nothing like a real creme brûlée) and my husband who is French found it inedible, they kindly subtracted it from the bill. It was a mixed bag but after all was said and done and the bill was $140, it wasn't worth the experience.
I came into the restaurant not knowing that it had a new owner and concept. What a difference! I was impressed with the care and craft put into their cocktail menu. The wine list was also impressive as it contained not only familiar names and varietals, but some names I don't regularly see. They just were written up in Wine Spectator, so you know they're doing something right! The food was impeccable. I strongly suggest the Hamachi Crudo, the Steak Tartare, and the Foie Gras. Our sea scallops were perfect as were both the greens and the avocado side dishes. Service was flawless. Truly this place has reached a new height. Compliments to the chef and management. Make sure you check out this fantastic option on the Westside. It just might be my new reliable favorite.
My friend and I picked this place for our dineLA outing...and it was great. We will definitely go back . The complementary wine at the door is a nice touch. Our waitress, Cassandra, was knowledgeable and great throughout the entire meal. Well rounded menu, and the food cooked to perfection.
Were greeted w a complimentary glass of champagne when checked in w hostess. Drinks were good. Seems to have a good happy hr till 9pm. Arrugula salad had a dressing that was way too sweet, special pasta dish OK (chorrizo fettuccine) more like salami than chorizo. Pasta was fresh. Friend's pork belly dish was good. We got a complimentary amuse busch ice cream w brownie @ end of meal. We also ordered Nutella creme bruléfor dessert. Friend said it was good. Service was great, little extras thrown in here n there, but some of the food was a little disappointing. Place was pretty, but kind of empty. I'd like to give it a 2nd chance. But I think food is what's keeping ppl away. The drinks were great!
This was our first time dining at the Roost, but it definitely won't be our last! The dining area is semi- outdoors, which makes it interesting. Our hostess greeted us with a glass of pink champagne, and she was just delightful. We chose to graze on several appetizers, and left feeling satiated and with a smile on our faces. We intend to become regulars at this neighborhood gem!
I had the seven course tasting menu with paired wines. One of the seven dishes was only ok (fish and chips). The other six were wonderful, as were all the wines. And the seventh course was actually four desserts we shared. So it really was eleven courses!
The ambience is unusual and nice. The restaurant is quiet so I could hear our conversation (a problem for me in many restaurants). The server was friendly and informative without being pretentious.
Overall, a wonderful evening. I'll be back.
Blt boring and too much mayo. Outdoor table uneven. Reported to hostess when seated but not checked until more than half way through meal. Menu less interesting and more expensive. Larger outdoor patio changed for the worse. "Quiet" area smaller. Used to like la farm. Very disappointed.
We ate here Saturday night initially with a little speculation, however were very pleasantly surprised. There has been a change in management and a change of chef. One of the few restaurants in L.A. that seem to care about customers. We had drinks on a patio with couches and a fireplace. We were seated when we wanted to be seated and again a very nice table by a fireplace. Chef John did a great job with my wife's duck breast and my skate wings. Manager Tony was most gracious! We Will be back.
Newly done , I was afraid this remake couldn't match the old LA Farm which was a favorite It was great. Even fish and chips were terrific! Had scallop appetizer which I recommend along with a mushroom appetizer, both exceptional. Can't wait to go back and try the black cod!! Thumbs up!
My husband and I recently went to the Roost at LA Farm for an evening out together. It's a tucked away little gem with a rustic, romantic vibe. I loved the ambiance created by the outdoor fire place, distressed wood finishes, and soft lighting. The service is attentive and helpful, and I really liked their sommelier. We started with the oysters - fabulous - and had their two house specialties - black cod and sea scallops. I found the black cod decadent and delightful, actually better than the scallops. The restaurant also has private rooms that can be used for larger gatherings; I think a rehearsal dinner or something was going on when we were there. We definitely plan to return to the Roost, and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys farm-to-table dining and casual elegance.
Had a great experience at the Roost at LA Farm. Service was great, food was delicious (had the cod--very tender and nicely plated, and my BF had the pork belly--so good), and the ambiance is excellent. It wasn't overly crowded and I don't know why; it's a really nice place for dinner, and the prices are competitive. There's also free valet, which is a bonus. Will be coming back again!
We had a most enjoyable evening at the The Roost at LA Farm. We enjoyed the music playlist throughout the evening. The service was very attentive without being overbearing. They easily accomodated special requests and dietary needs. We liked the shared platter and farm to table freshness.
The location was a bit unusual but once inside, my girlfriend loved it! The interior is nice and fancy. I'm not too good on choosing restaurants, but I'm glad I chose to come here. We enjoyed the DRY AGED BEEF RIBEYE 32oz and a glass of wine. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic date. I would do it all over if I could!
I did ask for a table by the fire pit, which they did not follow through with. That would be my only complaint. Besides that, everything was great!
My wife and I have been eating paleo having just finished a Whole 30 diet for a month. The Roost at LA Farm had tons of options from Gluten Free to Vegetarian. The hard part of a paleo diet is jazzing up food. My wife had the scallops and I had the pork belly. We loved the meal and said that we would be back before the end of the year. You can tell when a restaurant bends over backwards to provide a wonderful meal with alternative diets and they excel at it!
My husband and I had gone with a group of friends to The Roost at LA Farm for New Years Eve dinner, and what we had that evening was delicious. We wanted to return for our Valentine's Day dinner (early because of work). We arrived, were greeted kindly by the hostess, shown to our table in one of two beautiful covered garden areas right by a fire. The menu is varied, lots of options, so many delicious sounding things that we actually ended up ordering the "Trust Johnny" which is a tasting menu (5 or 7 courses) that the chef may model off the menu or may throw in some wild cards. Our first course was a delicious toasted crostini with smoked salmon, caviar and egg which was just a delectable way to start the meal- tasted so fresh. The we received a delicious lobster pasta with broccoli and a touch of cream in the sauce. It was very rich in flavor without being too heavy. The third course was sort of pork two ways. We had an absolutely to die for pork belly served with greens and apples marinated in Calvados. I actually forget what part of the pork the other way was, however I remember it being delicious and served with pillowy perfect gnocchi. And last of the entrees was the duck breast, which was succulent and wonderfully cooked, served with fried duck gizzards (which I can honestly say is not something I would have sought out, but was incredibly happy it was put on my plate). The waiter and chef were nice enough to oblige my request for two different types of dessert. I had a delicious well made chocolate brownie with a decadent chocolate ice cream on the side, and my husband had a delicious apple cobbler that was not too sweet and just perfect. We will definitely be back, and will continue to trust Johnny.
At the time we went, it was quiet and quick. Went at 6 pm from the SF valley. The 405 was moving. We had an 8pm show at the Geffen in Westwood. Oysters, tuna tartar and scallops, were all very tasty. The price was right because of a Restaurant.com offer. Will do it again.
my husband and I had a great time! smart looking restaurant with great service. we tried the tasting menu and wine pairing, which was the way to go. the manager was serving up some fantatic wines with our dinner which was incredible!! great music as well, not boring restaurant backround noise, actual quality music! we will be back, great local find.
The hostesses were great and friendly. Said happy birthday to our friend but I thought there would be a candle on the dessert and there wasn't.
Ordered medium rare burger, it came well done with lukewarm fries. When the waiter asked I showed him and he offered to change it but I declined. Still it was very flavorful.
My friends got lost, we waited about 15 minutes. The service was very slow also--consequently, I was charged a bit over $5 dollars at the parking kiosk after giving a $5 tip to valet. I had no idea there was a 2 hour limit on parking, no one mentioned this.
All in all, the atmosphere is wonderful, but I wouldn't go back.
I read previous reviews and I must say that they aren't completely correct. Some good, some bad. Overall, we had a very nice dining experience. Very good food with service that still needs some polishing.
I say, give it a try and decide for yourself. Oh, and the reviewer who said parking is impossible, not sure of the time of day they went, but it couldn't be easier.
I wish I had come on a night when the kitchen was fully prepared.
Four of us went on NYE for their 7-course prie-fixe menu. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time, but that was fine - we expected that considering it was NYE. Our first course was served around 10p.m.; the seventh at 2a.m. We had to wait one hour after the 1st course to receive our 2nd course. The paired wine would often come after we finished eating the course, so it almost seemed irrelevant. We felt sorry for the wait-stuff-- they were working hard and running around apologizing profusely.
I would recommend this place and/or come back again if I felt like we were compensated better for our time there. We didn't complain (our server told us we were his favorite table for being so understanding) but even after waiting through all the backflow of the kitchen's mistakes, we were not given any sort of compensation and were fully charged for everything. No wait, I take that back: we were given extra dessert (most likely left over from the patrons who left early b/c they got tired of waiting) - but at that point we didn't need extra dessert-- we didn't even want it.
While the food was pretty good, I still left with a bad taste in my mouth.
Have wanted to try this restaurant for a while. Decided to go on my birthday! Was excellent. Great service, very attentive and knowledgeable servers. Very nice wines, and the food was outstanding. Had Beet & Avocado Salad, Mushroom Ragout, Bone Marrow and Lobster Spaghetti. We loved everything. Nice ambiance
This is truly a revitalized spot in West Los Angeles. The new Chef and staff bring the very best skills and ingredients from their substantial experience in the Craft group - which is top notch. The menu is varied to meet many tastes and appetites. The preparations are unfussy, but everything we ate was wonderfully prepared. The cocktails are innovative and fun, and the wine list is full of good choices in all areas at fair prices. All in all, this is a top recommendation for a relaxed, comfortable settings with absolutely first rate cooking.
