The River Cafe - Puerto Vallarta Ratings and Reviews
River Cafe is a favorite of ours for food, atmosphere, and service. We have been coming to Puerto Vallarta for twenty years and would never miss the opportunity to dine here. It is a first choice for holidays and other special occasions. We always recommend it to friends who visit.
The River Cafe is our favourite restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, and we always make certain to dine with them when we are in town. The food, ambiance and service is always exquisite, but they really go the extra mile on special occasions. This was our second Valentine's meal with them (we are usually in Vallarta for two weeks in February) and the special menu was once again divine from the first bite to the last. The service by Antonio was impeccable.
We thought we were going to a classic, 4-5 star restaurant. Instead, tired decor, non creative menu, poorly executed. Grilled octopus that time not taken to properly tenderize- not even chewable. Mahi mahi, 1 portion not from prime center cut fillet but a fringe, a camelized sauce that was inedible, nauseatingly sweet without any complexity. Service which was not particularly attentive & amazingly slow for both 1st course & entree . Somebody is not managing this place!
River Cafe is definitely a PV classic. Nice secluded location along the river. Even saw a couple river otters. But also very close to both downtown and old town. Smoked salmon appetizer was terrific. Seared tuna entre was speculacular. And dirty martini was one of the best in PV. What more could you ask for?
Took my father to The River Cafe. Right from the start we were made feel very welcome. We were seated right away in the beautiful Gazebo over looking the river. It was around 4:30 so if you can do an early dinner or super late lunch, you can really enjoy the serenity this place can offer. We shared the Peruvian Ceviche that was Mahi mahi. It was fabulous. I ordered the duck with a blackberry sauce that was superb. My father ordered the ribeye and I forgot to order the sauce on the side. So glad because he really enjoyed it. I tried it and found the steak melted in my mouth. Very tender and tasty. Even the bread was a wonderful treat. While I wish I had room for one of their deserts there was more than plenty of food. We left there very happy and in need of a nap. The positive reviews are spot on. Glad I did not miss out.
We ate here on Christmas and were pleasantly surprised! I’ve walked by this place on the way to the shopping area on the rio cuale a ton of times and never stopped. Glad I picked it randomly on Opentable by availability on a holiday. Excellent service, quieter, great view of the river. Awesome food and great value! Can’t wait to go back in April!
We've eaten at River Cafe several times over the years and it always warranted a 5 star rating. Sadly, this time the food did not meet its standard. One of our party ordered a seafood platter he said was sorely disappointing. Another said the food was decent but not stellar as it has been before. My pasta was warm, not hot, and appeared to have sat under the heat lamps too long. Yes, we will go back...could have just been an off night.
We just had desserts. We had 3, cheesecake, creme brulee, and fried ice cream. The ice cream was great and really enjoyed. The other two seemed really dry or over cooked. They weren't very good. The presentation was good. We were bummed not to do the flambe for the kids, but it made since that we wouldn't see the flames in the day. We should have tried the flan, it was probably way better than the cheesecake.
The services was fantastic though. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly and made our kids feel welcomed. The harpists in the lobby was fantastic. We loved sitting next to the river. Such a cool environment.
The ambiance was very lovely, right by the river and the seating was on several levels giving a view of the river at most of the tables. Our table was out farther and more scenic. The food was good. The French toast was delicious, just as my husband described it more of a child’s portion.
We met "new" friends on vacation. They were from Indy. We had 2 great dinners with them. We sat on veranda over the river. We nice but very warm. Good, service and atmosphere was great. That was our 2nd visit to the River Cafe on this trip. We hope to return soon.
Interesting spot on the river in Old Town Puerto Vallarta. No air conditioning. Open air restaurant. Like most restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Not perfect on a hot, humid evening. The food was OK. Suffered in comparison to a great restaurant the prior evening.
We were visiting PV w/ my family. I reserved this place on line. Days prior to our reservation I had some questions about the restaurant which I emailed them and someone got back to me and answered all my questions.
Our table was on the terrace right by the River. This is such a cute place. We went here for lunch. We all fell in love with the place, food, drinks and the ambience. Our servers were really sweet, professional with awesome service. They had 2 for one drinks for happy hour. I had their fish tacos ( very tasty), my mom ordered the seafood pasta which was surprisingly very fresh and amazing taste. Others ordered the Mahi Mahi and Chillie dish ( very delicious and flavorful). I appreciated that they had kids menu for our toddler.
We wished we could have come back another time and try this place again. I would highly highly recommend this place. It will be an unforgettable experience. You will not regret it. Its a must if you are in PV.
