My BF and I love this place. The chef & staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and you can get a fine-dining experience without breaking the bank. Compare: at Alexander's you'll pay over $500 for a fancy meal, where at The Richmond you'll pay less than $200 for an almost equally fancy meal in a much quieter, more intimate setting. My ONLY complaint is that I think their menu maybe hasn't changed at all in a year or two, and I'd love to see what else the chef can do. Either way, it's an awesome little spot for a date! Highly recommend.
Great hidden gem in the inner Richmond . Great food and service.
I loved the food, and the comfortable feel of the restaurant
The owner/chef was terrific. He was knowledgeable about his wines.
His food preparation was excellent.
We all felt very much to home.
I will return again and again.
We had a lovely anniversary dinner and we were well taken care of by John. What a treat!
Our first visit to The Richmond, a dinner for two celebrating our 25th anniversary, was very relaxing. The tasting menu options that evening were perfect for us and we chose to splurge and match with wine pairings. We shared a lovely evening with wonderful food, wine and conversation you could share intimately without shouting or overhearing distractions of clatter or loud music. Perfect for our special evening!
Small restaurant in Richmond has been there for 13 years. So surprise we never know about this place before. It's not fancy restaurant but nice & quiet. They have only 7 table. The food is so amazing!! They offer tasting menu with wine paring with very reasonable price.
Consistently great food at a very reasonable price. Chef/owner greets everyone and makes you feel special. The atmosphere & ambience is very roomy as well as cozy. Love this restaurant.
We had heard good things about this restaurant...now we understand why. The owner/chef/server accepts only a limited number of reservations each evening. Orders are taken and executed by the owner, who also handles the wine service. Two carefully crafted tasting menus are offered, both a 3 and 5 course. Food is artfully presented. It is worth coming just for the included bread service (which has three very good compound butters). Wine pairing is available, and very affordable. The owner is very personable and eagerly ready to discuss the offered wines. Service is unobtrusive and professional. It was a very pleasant dining experience.
It was great: tasty food, excellent service, good vine, brilliant ! Very quiet place, so you can talk softly.
Special thank you to the owner and chef !!! My friend and I had good time. I am planning to come to The Richmond restaurant more often
Great people that have passion in making this a great restaurant
This is now one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, not just in SF. We've been here twice: each time the food was exquisite, the service (by the chef owner himself) impeccable. The chef is extremely knowledgeable and creates extraordinary and original taste combinations, not to mention the wine pairings. He'll even customize the wine selection to your preferences. He never fully books the small venue so he can personally attend to your experience. And it never fails to exceed expectations. We're talking Gary Danko quality at a fraction of the price. Treat yourself... you'll be glad you did.
The food was hit and miss. Some things were really good and others were just average. It is a good bang for your buck however and try the Panna Cotta, DELICIOUS.
Good food, good service as usual. We got prize fix as usual. Crab cake spinach salad, braised short rib and seared scallop and polenta - great appetizers. Good hot bread and spreads. Good leek soup sample. Tasty NY steaks we ordered 2 same entrees - tender, moiste, medium rare, a touch salty because of too much sauce. Good desert of chocolate peanut butter torte and ice cream. We love eating here. Water is constantly filled. Our food came out hot and well timed. Expect a lovely 2-hour experience going thru the courses. We are grateful for this neighborhood gem.
I finally had the opportunity to try this neighborhood gem that I have been hearing about for several years. I will not get into explaining every dishes with photos since they have been well documented in Yelp etc. I had the 5 course tasting menu and wine pairing for myself and my wife had the same minus the wine pairing. With the inclusion of substantial amuse bouches and complimentary Rose to start, it was practically a 7 course meal. I have been a food nut for a loooong time and have experienced high end cuisines over the years and the premium prices associated with it. At this point in my retired life, value conscious fine dining from time to time fits my bill and I found my sanctuary.
Chef/owner John is amazing in his role as a host, waiter, somellier and chef so that his clientale can enjoy this level of cuisine for reasonable price. Cudos to John, his wife and their team for the passion they bring to our table.
This restaurant is great! The owner does it all, cooks, serves, helps you pick your wine! Him and his wife give great service and are beyond friendly. I have been about 4x and every time my dinner is excellent. My boyfriend always gets the steak he always says its cooked perfectly. And the chocolate torte, if it is on the menu is a great finish to a great meal. He only serves a few tables a night so make a reservation. This is more then a meal, it is a dining experience!
While difficult to get a reservation now at the Richmond, it still has the same warm service, excellent and well priced wines, and really top notch food.
There is no question the The Richmond is one of San Francisco's best restaurants. Period. The charming chef is ever-attentive; this restaurant was his dream when he worked at the Dining Room at the Ritz. He wanted a neighborhood place where he could serve really special food. He has reduced the capacity to a size that works for him and for the lucky few who get to eat there. I do not have adequate superlatives to describe the quality of the food and service, especially at the price point--admittedly not inexpensive but a bargain for what you receive.
This was our first visit and we were very pleased. This is a really nice neighborhood restaurant that is slightly formal and upscale but with a quiet low-key atmosphere. The fixed price menus are a little more traditional than most restaurants these days but the food was delicious with very generous portions, the presentation was very nice and the service was excellent. We will definitely come back!
Wonderful find in a city with lots of wonderful restaurants. Yes, it is off the beaten path a little, but dining at The Richmond will be worth it. Great three-course prix fixe with wine pairings that were delicious. The chef explained every dish and our table of four tried and shared all of the dishes. We loved the corn bread pudding appetizer and the salmon entrée the most . . . but, all were very good. Run, don't walk, to The Richmond.
We booked the Richmond restaurant because of the Open Table reviews, it being a family owned neighborhood spot and a location away from the Union Square area where our hotel was. The Richmond is a charming local place. Our party of four all ordered from the three course menu of appetizer, entree and desert. The food is wonderfully delicious, the chef/owner took our order and explained the ingredients used and loved to talk wine.
Everybody was enormously happy with the chef John and the Richmond restaurant.
Highly recommend, and we will be going back next time we are up in SF.
Could not have asked for a better meal. Anyone who lives in, around, or traveling to San Francisco, the Richmond is an absolute must go.
This is a great little spot in the Inner Richmond. We have been meaning to go for a while and so glad that we finally did, the food was great and very nice to have a private dining experience. Definitely recommend!
We were a party of 8 there for the first time to celebrate a birthday. John was. Wry accommodating and made helpful wine and menu suggestions. Food was quite good and servings were generous. We'll definitely go back. Thanks for a great dinner, John
Neighborhood gem serving fantastic food and wine at reasonable prices! We ordered the 3-course tasting menu consisting of the crab cake with spinach salad, braised oxtail with scallop on polenta, duck leg with mashed potatoes, salmon and shrimp fritter, panna cotta with lemon curd, apple crisp with vanilla ice cream, and a surprise coffee semifreddo to celebrate our anniversary. The crab cake appetizer was large enough for 2 or as an entrée for 1 even. Everything was delicious and prepared to perfection. John poured a taste of a lovely Rose for our appetizer course, and we enjoyed a tasty pinot noir for our main course. We were seated in an area in the back where there are only 2 tables, and the other party wasn't scheduled to arrive until after we were gone, so we had the area to ourselves, which was romantic, cozy, and dark. John was the epitome of service--he defines it! He's honest, helpful, and attentive. The only reason I gave service 4 stars instead of 5 is because the "assistant" server was just OK. She didn't give us menus, extra bread, or ask us whether we wanted coffee or another beverage to have with dessert. Aside from that, this place is top notch! Parking wasn't an issue either, though our reservation was for 6pm. I highly recommend The Richmond and will be going back for our next special occasion! Thank you, John!
I came here for a quiet, intimate birthday dinner with my mom and aunt and best friend. What a great way to celebrate! The chef guided us through the menu and helped us select a variety of options so that we could more fully experience the menu. The wine list is extensive with many good and reasonably-priced options. Overall, it's a wonderful value!
Worth a visit. Food is very good and services is great and warm welcome. Place is quiet. We celebrated my son's 18th birthday and the family had a good time.
This place has great ambiance. I felt like we were all alone in the restaurant. Service was stellar for most of the meal. There were some lulls in service towards the end of our main and during the dessert. We did wait quite a while with empty plates sat in front of us for both of these courses, but otherwise it was great service. The a la carte food was overpriced compared to what I have seen at similar restaurants, but they have a nice 3 course or 5 course meal that seems to be a better value. Food was very good, not on par with the fancier places like Spruce or SPQR, but close enough. The only course I didn't care for was the Coffee Semifreddo dessert. We both agreed it was bland and wanting more in terms of texture and flavor. Will come back again sometime.
Inner Richmond location may be why it was so quiet when my fiance and I went there on Wed night but I liked it quiet. They were very nice people, very attentive. The food was excellent and I could not believe how low the tab was. We both had the 3 course tasting menu, and shared a bottle of Rhone wine and the total was $110.00!
One of my new favorite restaurants.
Excellent 3 or 5 course Prix fix menu, creative, fresh; nice wine pairings. Intimate setting, John and Thu provide excellent service. Great value, wonderful evening.
Lots of attention and care. Exceptional crafting and ingredients.
Every visit to San Francisco requires a trip to The Richmond. Menu is superb and wine list is eclectic and constantly varied. Excellent value, highest quality. Before I depart the East Coast I always secure a table at this gem.
This is an unusual restaurant and the reception and greeting is exceptional. Almost all the tables are in a private space surrounded by curtains. You are never up against other diners. That part is nice. We were a few minutes early for our reserved time, but we were offered a courtesy glass of wine while waiting. The menu is slightly complicated in that there are all these options of food plus wine offerings, but the basic menu is about $37.50 for 3 course dinner without the wine pairings (which is about an additional $30.00) We selected nice items but they did not meet our expectations completely. I had the duck confit but I was not able to finish eating it. It was just too dry and stringy. My dining friend ordered the steak and he was not enjoying it much.
All the same, I know the ambience is very nice, and many diners have given many nice reviews, so maybe we were just too late for the best they have to offer. Oh, their wines are very reasonably priced.
The food and service were great. It's run by a husband and wife and they do a fantastic job of making sure you're happy! There are curtains inside so you can get a more private/intimate dining experience if you'd like!
The food is the outstanding feature of this wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Each course was beautifully prepared. We were seated immediately (party of 2) and given menus with a choice between a 3-course and 5-course fixed price dinner. The chef told us that we could also order à la carte, but the value of the multi-course menu was far too good to pass up (3 courses for under $40 in total -- wine pairings with each course optional). The chef was remarkably attentive and polite -- offering us a complimentary glass of rose, as we ordered. Every course delighted us. The space was quiet due to heavy curtains that partition various eating areas. We will definitely go back and we will gladly recommend this to our friends.
A fabulous family-owned find! Personal service from the owner/chef. Three or five course meal, reasonably priced and incredibly delicious. Thoughtfully selected wine list. Would absolutely come back again next time I'm in town. So happy to have found The Richmond!
The owner of the Richmond is gracious and a good host. Not a large restaurant which is nice and food is amazing.
I loved it. I this was my 3rd visit and it was a wonderful experience. Great food and a quiet place to talk to one another. The service is very attentive and this is definitely fine dinning. Good wine list and a good value. Make reservations.
Love the restaurant, the food, the service, the way they stagger reservations, the warmth of the owner, the nice wine, ....
Such a wonderful little spot! Great food and hospitality!
Wonderful service, wine and food. A true gem in a cozy setting. Very much a locals place.
