"The Richmond" is a small family owned restaurant.
We offer two tasting menus: a 3-course menu for $50.00 and a 5-course menu for $79.00. Both menus come with optional wine pairings.
At "The Richmond" our goal is to put a premium on individual diners rather than volume. Each night we take a limited number of reservations. Our mission is to provide personalized food and service.
Please come and be part of our restaurant family.
The Richmond is truly a gem of a restaurant. John (the owner/chef) and his niece are friendly and attentive and will make certain you have a lovely evening dining with them. The quiet ambiance is a real treat and the food is excellent.
Everything about this restaurant is wonderful!
I took my aunt there for Mother’s Day and it was perfect. The service is personal and warm, the food is exceptional, and in a city of overpriced restaurants, the cost is not stratospheric. I’m definitely going to return. 😋
Talk about a gem. Impeccable service with truly top notch food and very thoughtful wine pairings. It's been around and we have rediscovered it. We will be returning often.
We keep coming back because we love the quiet, intimate, and elegant ambience. Great food and wine pairing.
Just gorgeous ( as usual). A level of authentic caring service you don’t see very often in San Francisco.
A wonderful experience, unexpectedly personal and attentive service and excellent food. We both had the duck fettuccine as our mains which had the most flavorful sauce. One of the best aspects was our table which felt like we were VIPs but in fact every table is private. We will certainly be back.
This was the best meal experience we've ever had. We were still a bit jet legged so when having to make a decision was taken out of our hands it was bliss. A variety of taster dishes were brought to the table each one complimenting the one before, culminating in an apple dessert complete with birthday candle for my husband. It was altogether amazing. I can't recommend it highly enough - you need to try it yourself.
I've lost track of how many times I've been to The Richmond and I'm running out of superlatives. Everything was top-notch and delicious as always. This is literally my favorite restaurant in San Francisco.
Excellent food and service. Always well taken care of. great Intimate location!!!
Put simply, an amazing experience overall. We are so used to being hustled out of restaurants so tables can be turned that we were very pleasantly surprised when we were specifically told to take all the time we needed to enjoy our dining experience - we did so, and loved it. There was an incredible attention to detail in the service and the food and wine pairings were top-rate.
If you want to feel special and well taken care of while dining, check out the Richmond. The experience is always quite lovely and the attention of the waiter and chef was great. We had some food allergies that tend to disrupt a prix fixe menu but let the restaurant know in advance and there was very little issue. The food was amazing as evidenced by our many empty plates. My daughter had the pork chop and it was outstanding. While not pretentious, this place is one we will go back to for special occasions because they make you feel special and the food is always outstanding.
Lovely and quiet, as always. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about wine and an excellent chef. No wonder it's so hard to get a reservation.
This place is highly underrated! Outstanding food and great service for an extremely reasonable price. The chef came out to do our wine pairing and checked-in on us throughout the evening. Would definitely recommend!
Great, Great food. Nice relaxed and cozy atmosphere. They allow you to enjoy your complete Prix Fixe menu without being rushed. Also with the curtained off areas, it's like your own private dining room (nice and quiet). The chef comes out to see how your meals are going, and again the quality and variety (for a Prix Fixe menu), and portions that allow you to share a little with a friend and still have something for yourself.
We had a perfect evening with friends at The Richmond. This is a neighborhood gem. I would recommend it to anyone.
What a delightful experience. I can’t remember when I have had such a relaxed and enjoyable dinner. The waiter (owner) greeted us at the door and gave us our choice of tables. Then he told us that we had the table for the night as there would be no other patrons taking our table. Wow—that has never happened to me in the U.S. Each table has it’s own booth so it is like being in a private dining room. The stemware was beautiful; no thick rims. The food was excellent. I had one of the best salads I have ever had and my friends crab cakes were delightful. The duck was slow cooked and fell off the bone. Very tasty with a mushroom sauce over a bed of pasta and spinach. I finished the meal with a coconut creme brûlée. It was a fixed price menu—3 courses for $50. The wine was very good and most were about $10/glass. No wonder it is so hard to get a reservation here.
John, the chef and proprietor, always comes to our table to greet us and provide personalized service!
As always, the food at The Richmond was delicious and beautifully presented though not in a "precious" manner. A very small restaurant, it feels like dining in a private home where, unusual for San Francisco restaurants, the noise level is so low that actual conversation is possible and the cost of dining is quite reasonable! A real neighborhood gem!
We were all alone
Cozy w/great food
We had an excellent dinner at The Richmond. I had a delicious crab cake, and a NY Steak with a lovely sauce, plus an Apple Tart for desert. All this is on their price fixed menu at $50. The owner/chef is very present in the restaurant and is very eager to please. There was also an amuse bouche of potato leek soup..yummy. It is a very small restaurant, so you need to book well in advance.
Merveilleux souvenir !
Cuisine inventive par un chef très attentionné.
I have never had a dining experience quite like this. We were celebrating my son’s birthday. We had our own private area, and John, the chef and owner, personally waited on us and served all the wine and food. They only have one seating and so you don’t have to worry about being rushed so that they can turn the table. I can’t recommend the Richmond highly enough. The only caveat is you need to make your reservation weeks in advance.
Great meal for 2 on a date night. 10/10 on everything.
To quote my boyfriend: "this is the best meal of my life"! This is such a cozy and intimate dining experience, and the food is so flavorful, fresh and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend for a special occasion as the chef made our celebration extra special by treating us to an extra dessert dish and glasses of wine.
I love the food and the seating is fabulous.
John has a fabulous selection and understanding of wine
An unbelievably unique and extraordinary experience... every time. Will be back soon! Highly recommend.
Such an unassuming place tucked into a quiet street in the Richmond district. What a special treat to have the chef at your table pouring flights of wine and talking shop between each course that he just prepared! Food is solid, with some dishes standing out more than others like the braised duck pasta and veal sweetbreads. Wines were amazing for the price point. Service was generous and warmer than anything I’ve had in a long time. Will definitely be back!
Amazing and innovative food , fantastic and friendly service and great wine! Waiter and chef/owner were very genuine, attentive and friendly. Thank you and we will be back!
We met up with another couple and the experience was great. Great service and food coupled with a nice wine list made for a very good environment in which to catch up.
Food was wonderful and quiet table was perfect for a romantic evening. The good and wine pairing was perfect and the chef is such a delight.
The food are good, except we took 3 hours to finish the dinner, but it's a French dinner we understand
Wonderful food and service, fantastic neighborhood gem. Chef’s one-man vision of what he wants his restaurant to be and the results always lead to a fun and delicious night.
Don't let the description of a'tasting menu' discourage
There's plenty to eat@a reasonable price. Great date spot
Excellent experience! Food was great with personalized service, great pairings + great value. Thank you!
Service was very good and attentive. We had good time
John, owner and chef, is extremely friendly, treats you as a dear friend, goes extra mile (and extra hour ) to make your visit exceptional. He is big on good vines and excellent food.
Everything was really very good, but the apple and goat cheese tart was out of this world.
It is a pity, I cannot stop just for the tart and a cup of coffee...
I really enjoyed my experience at The Richmond. Would have never known it was there if I didn't discover it on Yelp first. Chef John and his niece Thanh are so hospitable and friendly. The restaurant is cozy and intimate, with partitions separating each table so each party has plenty of privacy. The food is incredible and portions are generous! it is clear Chef John puts a lot of thought into each course. Loved the duck and the apple and goat cheese tart.
The Chef, Johh, greeted us at the door and showed us to our table. The way The Richmond operate is quite unique: Chef John was not only the Chef but he also is your server. He took some time to chat with us, pour our wine and explained each dish.
The ambiance: small and cozy, very few table, such a great idea to use a big long red curtain to separate our dining area right by the door. It gave privacy but also didn't feel box in.
The staff: this is for other staff and not the Chef, one of the staff brought out our appetizer and just walked away. Although the presentation was quite beautiful, we didn't know what exactly in it. Chef John came out and we told him, he apologized and explained the ingredients and how the way it was cooked. He then personally brought out each dish after that for us. The staff was also talking loudly in Vietnamese that we could hear their conversations (we are Vietnamese) in the kitchen. But they quieted down when more people came into the restaurant. This was the only thing we didn't enjoy that night.
The food: outstanding and in unique flavor.
We chose the Three Course Tasting Menu
-Shrimp Fritters in Shrimp Bisque served with carrot-cabbage salad & shrimp chip
-Red Wine Braised Short Rib & Maine Diver Scallop with creamy polenta
- Braised Duck & Fettuccine in mushroom port wine sauce & baby spinach
-Seared New York Steak with potato hash & Swiss chard
-Apple Tart: cinnamon vanilla ice cream
-Coffee Semifreddo: coffee ice cream, coffee granite & almond brittle
Sensational experience. Gracious personal service from the chef himself. Small place seating only 24, I think. Each table has its own private space. Limited menu, but creative choices. They offer only tasting menus, a three course ($50) and a five course, each with a wine option for I think $40 additional, but worth it. I never order pork chops or roast in a restaurant because they tend to be dry, but I ordered the pork roast and it was so flavorful and delectably tender -- more like a prime rib than a pork roast. Prices may be somewhat high on the face of it, but more than worth it for the quality of the food and the experience. Highly recommended. Street parking.
Very good, how many places do you go now days where the chef and owner is also your waiter?! John is a character and definitely wants you to relax and take it easy....if you are in a hurry this is not the place.
