Message from John & Thu Ha:
"The Richmond" is a small family owned restaurant.
We offer two tasting menus: a 3-course menu for $50.00 and a 5-course menu for $79.00. Both menus come with optional wine pairings.
At "The Richmond" our goal is to put a premium on individual diners rather than volume. Each night we take a limited number of reservations. Our mission is to provide personalized food and service.
Please come and be part of our restaurant family.
Pan Seared Salmon

Red Wine Braised Short Rib & Maine Diver Scallop

Conclusions from our first visit: Outstanding food from an outstanding chef. We'll give it another try as soon as we can and keep trying the menu!
What a wonderful local spot! The own came out and poured extra glasses of wine, the waiter advised us to take our time and enjoy, the price was incredibly fair but the food was the best part. We had the rib/scallop first course, I had salmon and my husband had the duck pasta for our main, then we finished with the warm peanut butter chocolate lava cake and semifredo! Every bit was greasy and delicious. Tables are semi private and it so easy to talk and hear others at your table because of the curtains. Can’t wait to go back. Surprised this place is not Michelin rated.
Wonderful meal to celebrate a friend’s big birthday. We were well taken care of before we even stepped through the door, helping me to arrange for a very nice Sparking wine to be chilled and ready to pour.
The meal was excellent, as always. John, Chef/Owner, makes an excellent and to-be-remembered three course meal at half what you would pay downtown (or anywhere else for that matter). The one server is attentive and helpful, while still being cognizant of the flow of conversation and food/wine. It is all well thought out and “choreographed” between the two of them.
The braised short ribs over polenta and topped with a perfectly seared diver scallop tells right away that you are in for a worthy treat. Two of our party had the perfectly cooked NY steak, one had salmon and exclaimed “perfect!”, and our fourth guest had the fettuccine with duck in a port wine reduction sauce and was also wowed by the fresh ingredients and a master’s cooking style. Deserts included homemade individual apple pies, a dense and sinful baked chocolate and peanut lava cake and a rich coconut custard flan.
The Richmond is an extremely fine chef’s vision of the restaurant he wants to own and cook at, as well as the realization of that creative but grounded execution. Go to enjoy the food and wine, and to be impressed that restaurants like this still exist if you look to find them. It isn’t world-changing, nor does it want to be, just wonderful creatively-inspired food cooked and served simply and elegantly.
5 star experience every time. You get the table to yourself the whole evening— no rush from the wait staff or the chef who both come around frequently to check in. High quality food at a reasonable price for SF. One of our favorites!
One of the best dining experiences in SF. Wonderful service and incredible food. Can’t wait to come again
A rare gem. Restaurant only turns about 8 tables per night. Reserve three weeks ahead or use opentable for same-day reservations. Very personal service from the chef (John) his team. Wine selection eclectic (ask for what is not on the list). Menu limited but crafted deliciously with love. Do not go if you want to eat and leave in 60 minutes. Go if you want to savor the evening in the seclusion of your own island of culinary and languorous comfort.
This place is great for noise and space. Each table has a curtain, so you have a private table. The chef comes out to talk to you about your food. Our meal was very good. I would go again.
This is an amazing little gem in the Richmond. The food is amazing and the personalized attention from John is really special. It's a tiny restaurant, just 7 people and they go out of their to give each table privacy (we overlapped with the table next to us for just 10 minutes, the rest of the time we had our walled off section to ourselves).
We tried the fried oysters which were on their first night on the menu, can't recommend highly enough.
Absolutely incredible dining experience!
This is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. It cannot be beat for value, service and attention to detail for a pre-fixe style restaurant.
The Richmond restaurant is a hidden GEM: fabulous ambiance, accommodating chef, most wonderful service and food (tasting menu allows for choices...wonderful experience)
Great food, wonderful service, sets the mood for a spectacular date night. The Richmond knows how to take care of their guests.
Again, a wonderful meal and enjoyable evening. Chef John is as delightful as he is gifted...a culinary master!
He is on top of his game with the wine list as well. Enjoy!
Dinner at the Richmond was a memorable and unique dining experience. The service was attentive but not invasive, and does not disturb the privacy afforded diners by the venue's design. The food was delicious and reminded me of familiar tastes in totally new arrangements, such as the Shrimp Fritters creamy Salmon with Corn Pudding. Highly recommend this neighborhood gem. We only live 2 blocks away and definitely will go back!
I walked by this place for so many years and only now decided to have our anniversary dinner there!
Amazing and welcoming atmosphere, so personal and private- it makes you feel very special! John is an amazing host and chef! His waiter was also extremely welcoming!
Food was amazing! Wine selection is excellent!
The owner-chef-host is an almost lost tradition alive at The Richmond. It really shows in the warmth of welcome, knowledge of a well chosen wine list and excellent food. I recommend this restaurant to all I know, making it a little difficult to get a reservation.
A great neighborhood restaurant for relaxed, private conversation while enjoying delicious, creative cuisine attentively served. We return frequently with discerning friends and family.
By far, one of the most beautiful restaurants I have ever been to. Been coming here for over 10 years for special occasions, just recently to celebrate our New Year’s decompression. Quiet and intimate with delicious food and amazing wine list. Impeccable service by the chef-owner - organic and heartfelt conversation and amazing experience driven dining.
Incredible food and experience! Chef is extremely attentive and knowledgable. Will definitely be back!
Fabulous! Great place for a special occasion.
John is the best host & owner. He can always recommend wine pairing that’s excellent & reasonable. I bought my relatives here and they loved the food & extraordinary service.
The Richmond is such an amazing place. They specialize in personalized service with amazing food and cozy nooks. John, the chef and owner, personally greets every guest and walks you through the menu, the wine selection, and the thoughts behind the pairings. We will continue to return every few months or so to try their rotating menu. We are so lucky to have this in our neighborhood!
Beautiful, great food. Quiet - actual conversation can be had!
Our go to place for quiet diners. The chef is very nice and always comes to your table to get your order. The pre fixed items are excellent and there are so many flavors in your mouth when you eat any of his dishes.
Great food and service as usual.
We went to The Richmond for our 40th Anniversary. The service, the food, the taste, the experience, was fantastic. Thank you John (the chef) . This truly a gem.
This little gem is was a recommendation from a food-knowledgeable San Franciscan and we were delighted to learn about it. Three- or five-course menus, with or without wine pairing at very reasonable prices. The service and attention is excellent because they do not turn the tables, and each of those tables is quiet and private. Best of all is really great food prepared with care. Do not miss a chance to enjoy The Richmond.
Always enjoy coming here to enjoy the food and service.
little place with a big offering. just wonderful. Table yours for the night, not many restaurants around like that.
A wonderfully intimate, quiet dining experience. The food is lovingly crafted--not dominated by the latest and trendiest moves but by the fine personal sensibility of the chef/proprietor, who is very much present both in the kitchen and in the front of the house.
Amazing food, service, and value - can’t wait to go back!
A neighborhood gem. Very quiet, tables very separate, very creative food, and you are taken care of by the chef.
We had an absolutely decadent evening!!! Food, ambience and service were over the top!! Chef/Owner John was wonderful!
Every item from the bread to appetizers (esp the pancetta with Brie) to the duck falling off the bone to the coconut creme brûlée to the coffee dessert to the peanut butter filled chocolate cake were exquisite. We will be back as soon as we can!
Once again, Chef John delivers. Brought two couples that had never been and loved it! John always goes out of his way to feel welcomed and accommodate any dietary limitations.
We thoroughly enjoyed our3 course tasting dinner!
Extremely pleasant evening facilitated by John - the owner and chef. Pace of the meal was slow and deliberate so we could converse organically without pressure - felt very European in experience that way. And the wine was excellent and reasonable. Very high value restaurant!
I've had the pleasure of dining at The Richmond several times over the past 10 years. Each time, the food, service and ambience has been excellent! It's a small neighborhood restaurant with an owner/chef who's very involved with the experience of his guests as well as the quality of the food. He has an excellent wine list; I've always been pleasantly surprise with its quality. It's very quiet, many tables surrounded by long velvet curtains. What a 'find' in the Richmond district! I highly recommend it!
