About The Richmond
Message from John & Thu Ha:
The Richmond is a small family owned restaurant. Our goal is to deliver upscale food and service at neighborhood prices. Since the Spring of 2005, we have created relationships with local farmers and ranchers. The entire Richmond Restaurant family would like to thank our suppliers, and most importantly, our loyal customers for your support. We are proud to have you as part of our small community.
Our goal is to offer some of the cheapest "restaurant" wine prices in the Bay Area. We believe most local restaurants take advantage of customers with overly inflated wine prices. My wife and I are committed to selling wine at more than 30 percent below typical restaurant pricing. Our wine list has an emphasis on small local family wineries.

The Richmond Ratings and Reviews
John and his team at The Richmond went above and beyond to make our experience truly amazing. My husband and I were married earlier in the day and chose The Richmond to celebrate. Upon hearing of our celebratory news John and his team went to quick work making our evening a night we will never forget. The food was delicious, and the service was the perfect amount of attentive. We will definitely be back!
We were a party of 5 and has a wonderful experience. the owner ; chef checked with each person and made 5 different meals for each of us ... FOOD WAS AWSOME ..
restaurant was quite and we could really hear each other. We loved the personal touch.
will go back again asap.... the silverman's
Love this place. This city has a lot of great restraurants but when I lived in North Beach I found this place worth the drive. I have left California, when I returned last Thursday to take my daughter out for dinner, I picked the Richmond and we could not have been happier.
The Richmond was the perfect venue for a casual date night. The food was delicious from start to finish, and a great value by San Francisco standards. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was super cozy. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and will be back in the future!
My wife and I were in town visiting San Francisco and booked a table at this wonderful little restaurant. The restaurant is small with 8 or so tables. Each table is very private -- we finally felt we had a real occasion to talk without being distracted! The staff of the restaurant is small and willing to engage to make sure the evening is enjoyable. The chef/owner is also the waiter and he helped us pick out a terrific bottle of wine (after letting us try three different ones to make sure we liked it). The food was excellent and really represented cooking with seasonal ingredients. It is a well priced three course meal with an appetizer, main course, and dessert. We loved all three courses. The owner even walked us to our taxi when the meal ended. It was such a nice evening and one of the highlights of our trip.
We always enjoy dining at The Richmond. The food was wonderful and beautifully plated. The staff is attentive and friendly. John the chef/owner dropped by our table several times to talk to us and answered questions about how the food was prepared. We appreciated his attention and willingness to share recipe "secrets".
Hard to beat this friendly, welcoming, informally casual neighborhood haven -- a quiet place to relax with friends for dinner or to celebrate that special wedding anniversary. Three-course and five-course tasting menus--with or without thoughtful wine pairings--offer a wide range of sublime combinations. The wine list reflects the owner's hands on approach to everything, coupled with extensive knowledge and intent to offer a range of value prices that are not found anywhere else. After nearly 15 years of menu refinement and experimentation, the Richmond has evolved into an experience that always delights.
We had a terrific dinner at the Richmond in that the food and service were great. Chef John stopped by and chatted about the specials. I mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary. We opted for the 3 course fix price meal which included appetizer, main entree, and dessert. Then came the special treatment and service. First Chef John came back with 2 complementary glasses of wine. Then warm fresh bread and 3 different spreads were brought followed by 2 small cups of soup. We ordered the Crab Cake and the Whisky Braised Oxtail with a Maine Diver Scallop for appetizers, and they were delicious. The Crab Cake was moist and tender and packed with a lot of crab. The Whisky Braised Oxtail with a Maine Diver Scallop were also cooked to perfection. For the main entrees we had the Duck Leg and Bone in Pork Roast. The Pork Roast was so tender and juicy and I never had any Pork like that before. Then came the complimentary dessert Coffee Semifreddo with lighted candles and the waitress singing happy anniversary before the real dessert. I was getting full but everything was so delicious that we kept going. For dessert, we ordered the Panna Cotta with fresh fruit on top and warm Peach Crisp which topped everything off. Chef John stopped by one last time to ensure that we were satisfied and enjoying our dining experience. He mentioned that they always try to do their best in terms of the food and service but know that they can't please everyone. I think from all the positive reviews that people are appreciating their efforts. We rolled out of the Richmond happy campers having had a great anniversary celebration of terrific food and service at a very reasonable price.
This was our first visit to The Richmond, despite having read good things about it for some time, and the owner/chef could not have been more personable and helpful in our menu selections, taking time out from a busy kitchen on the hottest day recorded in San Francisco to describe each dish and its preparation in detail. Everything we ordered was very very good, especially the shortrib/scallop appetizer and the duck entree. It is a great place to get together where you can actually hear your friends, and not worry about speeding through dinner either. We were there for over three hours and never felt like they were anxious for us to leave. Another plus is that oarking in the neighborhood isn't hard to find. We will definitely return!!
Have been to The Richmond multiple times and the food and service is always fantastic. Been roughly a year since my last visit and I thought it was interesting that they had switched to a tasting menu only, either 3 or 5 courses. The 3 course (appetizer, main and dessert with several options for each) is pretty much what I usually ordered, just an interesting change to make note of.
In a word...SUPERB! Owner/chef John's creative and unique dishes compare with some of the finest restaurants in San Francisco, at half the price or less. Our party of 4 selected the prix fixe 3 course dinners from numerous options. As examples: appetizer of braised short rib sitting on bed of polenta and topped with a scallop...melted in my wife's mouth; my main of perfectly roasted duck fell off the bone accompanied with al dente vegetables and mashed potatoes...this was the best duck presentation I've enjoyed in years; our friends' mains of salmon and New York steak were also perfectly prepared and presented. As for desserts...so delightful it's worth returning just for the desserts. Wines are very reasonably priced, and John is quick to offer recommendations and tastes before your final selection. John does not 'turn' tables, so once you sit down, there is no rush and you can enjoy the evening at your leisure. We dined for 2.5 hours. With soft music in the background, there are only about 6-7 tables with velvet curtains dividing the areas, providing for a quiet experience, contrary to most high end city restaurants. John is delightful, friendly and engaging...all the while efficiently functioning both chef and wait staff, as his wife was home ill that evening (though he did have help in the kitchen). The venue is simple and not flashy; but who cares...you go there for the superb preparation of creative and unique dishes. Highly recommended. Indeed we will return.
Really nice dining experience. You get a table which is sectioned off from other tables by curtains so it's a great spot for a date or intimate conversation. The chef comes out and talks through the menu and wine pairings which is a nice touch. The food was all very good. Looking forward to trying more of the menu next time.
I was searching through Open Table for a place to eat with my parents on an upcoming Saturday night, which can be quite a task in SF if you don't book enough in advance. We were dining at 6pm, so that did offer more options, but nothing was really jumping out to me until I came across The Richmond, which had the bonus points of being in my neighborhood. I was intrigued by the reasonable priced food and wine tasting menus, and thought the food sounded appealing for both meat-eaters and vegetarians.
Well, it sure met and exceeded expectations. The chef was wonderfully accommodating and his presence helped make the meal even more enjoyable. The food was creative yet not over-the-top showy, and downright delicious. And boy, was the wine tasting awfully generous. I still cannot get over how succulent the initial glass of rosé was.
Thank you, The Richmond, we will be back soon!
My BF and I love this place. The chef & staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and you can get a fine-dining experience without breaking the bank. Compare: at Alexander's you'll pay over $500 for a fancy meal, where at The Richmond you'll pay less than $200 for an almost equally fancy meal in a much quieter, more intimate setting. My ONLY complaint is that I think their menu maybe hasn't changed at all in a year or two, and I'd love to see what else the chef can do. Either way, it's an awesome little spot for a date! Highly recommend.
Our first visit to The Richmond, a dinner for two celebrating our 25th anniversary, was very relaxing. The tasting menu options that evening were perfect for us and we chose to splurge and match with wine pairings. We shared a lovely evening with wonderful food, wine and conversation you could share intimately without shouting or overhearing distractions of clatter or loud music. Perfect for our special evening!
Small restaurant in Richmond has been there for 13 years. So surprise we never know about this place before. It's not fancy restaurant but nice & quiet. They have only 7 table. The food is so amazing!! They offer tasting menu with wine paring with very reasonable price.
