We have been Burdick's fans for many years, visiting several times yearly in all seasons and for many special occasions. We were never disappointed by the service, the ambiance, or the food. Last night none of these features rated highly. The decor has changed from charming to really unattractive art, with high prices labeled for prospective purchase. The service was lackadaisical and the servers were obviously uninterested in their clients. Two fish selections were already gone when we arrived at 7:15 and there was little apology and no accommodation. When our orders arrived, we found them very pedestrian compared to previous culinary experiences here. There was no attempt to offer more bread and we had to ask for more water and butter as a tiny serving was inadequate for 4 diners. And at the end, the plain bitter chocolate, in tiny bits, was no comparison to the Burdick's treats offered in the past. We found the pricing has also changed and the quality of the food does not match the price.
We are now bidding a sad farewell to happier memories of Burdick's.
As always the food was outstanding.
Burdick's is truly a jewel.
We had a lovely lunch with friends. I had the Ken's salad which was fresh and perfect. The salmon was a generous portion, crispy and juicy. We came on a weekday and it was not crowded. We were able to keep the table for more than an hour and enjoy the lovely ambiance. The service was fine, all in all worth the trip.
This was our second time and we were a little disappointed; mostly with the service. I think, perhaps, the waiter was new. He did not know what the soup de jour was, we were not told about the daily specials (we heard them from another waitress after our food was delivered), and our waiter seemed devoid of any personality. The food was very good as it was last time. This was a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived. it is a very nice place and we will surely try it again, but this night was a let down.
We were disappointed with the food quality. It was not like the 'old' Burdicks restaurant at all. We really loved the experience last year. Just not the same. We probably won't go back unless we need some chocolate.
The front of the house and kitchen staff were outstanding, polite, friendly and knowledgeable.
Cocktails-delicious. Mohito was on point.
Apps- Great selection. Had a cheese selection, brie was perfect creamy, crostini with honey drizzle, yummy, strawberry/rhubarb jam, perfect, nuts, great finish.
Oysters were wonderful, not overly briny.
Dinner-Duck,wow. Sweetbreads, beef stew. All exceeded our expectations.
Wine-good selection, great advice.
Overall a gem. Can't wait to return.
It made a friend's birthday a memorable one. Lovely, as always.
We visited Burdicks with our friends who were staying with us for the weekend. The restaurant has a distinctively French vibe, with food and decor reminiscent of a Parisian bistro. The craft cocktails are wonderful. The menu, while not extensive, has several offerings that are authentically French. The mussels and charcuterie plate as appetizers are delicious. We enjoyed the roast chicken, beef stew, short ribs and salmon. Leave room for dessert. Burdicks
is known for their chocolate and they do not disappoint. "Harvard Square" is worth the calories!
We enjoy lunch here a couple times a year and always have a delicious meal. The beef stew and steak are especially good. I now order the beef stew even though I rarely eat red meat because it is excellent. If you like French cuisine I think you will enjoy this place. Also, the rustic bread is tasty especially dipped in a cup of dark hot chocolate. The service is always good and often excellent as it was on this visit. This visit we had the opportunity to have a private conversation but when the restaurant is busy if the folks at the next table are not quiet it's not as enjoyable since some of the tables are close together. I've learned to make a reservation for an early lunch so I can pick a table I like. We drive an hour and a half to go and we aren't sorry we did. We always stop at the chocolate shop next door to pick up dessert or chocolate for later. And the Walpole grocery store has some fine items. Burdick's is expensive for a lunch but it's a lovely treat!
We have been to Burdick's several times before and always had a great meal. Unfortunately we left disappointed this time. The food was so-so and the service was clumsy (i.e., nobody came over to check if we needed water, it took 1.5 hours before we received our food while we saw people who came in before us eat and leave). The only highlight was the dessert which should be a given since they're a chocolatier. We're not sure if it was a bad night but in the past we would go way out of our way to come here, looking forward we will likely explore other options closer to wherever we may be.
A very special place we go to every time we pass Walpole. Beside the food the well trained staff is a pleasure.
The food was very good this Sunday. We did dinner, as opposed to brunch. I started with the Bleu Cheese salad..very good. Richard had the coconut carrot soup, which was very nice no overpowering of the coconut flavor. For my main I had the Sft Shell Crabs, which were excellent. Richard had the Curry Goat, which was very good, but could have had more kick to it.
For dessert we split the Chocolate mousse, which was excellent.
Burdicks Chocolates has the best chocolate you can find anywhere and their little cafe is the closest thing to France you'll find in rural New Hampshire. The adjoining restaurant next door has great food and atmosphere. In addition, the location is Walpole, a beautiful little town with classic New England homes and churches.
We've been going to Burdick's several times a year for many years. In the past it's always been consistently excellent, our second favorite restaurant in NH. However we were disappointed on our last visit, the food was good but it wasn't up to Burdick's usual standards. We are hoping that they had an off night and that last nights dinner wasn't the new norm.
Food is excellent. Love soft shell crabs. The menu is somewhat exotic for NH-VT area. On a Friday night we were surprised how uncrowded it was for 7 PM. We had reservations but did not need them. This has been our go to place fro a few years.
Burdick's was a treat as always. Our waitress was superb!!!!
Good place to meet a friend from Massachusetts for lunch.
We love Burdicks. Always great. We are there every week
We had a great dinner at Burdicks Saturday night and heard they did Sunday brunch, so we returned. We were not disappointed. Another great meal with wonderful service. We were just visiting the area, but we will definitely be back.
Just visiting the area and found the Restaurant at Burdick's on OpenTable. Wonderful experience - great meal, friendly service, and a pleasant location.
The waiter, was new on the job and sadly, had not received proper training. The whipped Chevre was great! The charcuterie plate, for some odd reason was served with a huge chunk of butter. I think it should have been cheese? Polenta, Beef Stew and Steak Frites all good. Halibut cooked to death! Returned it, we found out it was the last piece and were required to choose something else. The kitchen was very slow on this particular evening.
Chocolate Mousse and espresso, spot on.
We have dined here multiple times. Sad to say the service was not as prompt as usual. May have had new staff starting out. Had to wait about 10 minutes for someone to take our drink order. When we did receive our lattes they were luke warm. Our usual favorite dish, french toast, was not cooked all the way through. Also they used too much liquor in it. We sent the order back and instead of the thick slices usually presented they gave us three thin sliced pieces of bread. Didn't have the same taste and I only took a few bites. This dish was very disappointing. The chef did come out to check on us. He did say he was not the usual brunch chef and did take the french toast of our bill. We usually leave very satisfied but not today.
The food was delicious as always. The waitress was very nice and professional and helped us choose our meal from the menu. Would highly recommend.
We are longtime patrons of Burdick's, which is a genuinely civilized place.
We like it a lot, but there have been ups and downs -- perhaps related to changes in leadership in the kitchen.
I had a somewhat bizarre dish of quail and vinegary soba noodles, which was fairly described: I should not have ordered it. Oysters were of high quality, and the salad -- as usual-- was excellent.
My wife's short-ribs were good.
The restaurant serves a very high quality espresso coffee: too bad it always comes out 'lungo'.
They should search harder for interesting wines in the $30-50 range.
The 'loss' of the coadjacent chocolate shop/bakery is of significance at dessert time.
This restaurant has been MUCH better at various times in the past: we hope it will be return to prior levels of excellence.
Love this place, it never fails. Always an interesting menu, good selection available, nice wines as well.
Burdick's is a reliably good experience. Two recommendations this time: 1) Wish they had larger local NH beer selection. 2) I guess the warm chocolate cake dried up while reheating, was too crumbly.
Always love Burdicks. Dinner fabulous brunch superb
Food was good as always, but since the restaurant divorced the chocolate shop, the charm is gone. Corporate replaced country comfort. The suits poisoned it for me. Staying away for now.
Something has definitely changed at Burdicks! We have been going there for many years and have always been quite pleased. This time things were definitely changed - the service was marginal and the food was only adequate. I hear that there has been a change in ownership of the restaurant part of the business and perhaps this would explain the change. VERY unfortunate, whatever the case! We won't be going back anytime soon.
The well known and casually comfortable ambiance has recently been elevated to a new level of dining excellence with a menu of beautifully presented and deliciously prepared entrees. Congrats to the chef and staff. An old friend has been rejuvenated.
Lovely place, recommended by a friend who lives in the area. We drove from Concord and were so happy we made the trip!
This was not my first visit to Burdick's. As usual, the food was delicious. The service was attentive. The only snafu was that the prices on the menu did not match what we had on our bill. The discrepancy was taken care of by our server, but I would just caution patrons to look over their bill carefully before paying. This had never happened in previous visits and the hostess said the menus had recently changed, so perhaps that's why. We will definitely come to Burdick's again.
Fabulous meal with fresh local food. Charming atmosphere. Professional service. Flavorful trout for him and salmon for me. We split a crunchy, green salad and later the seven-layer cake dessert. Delightful and cozy setting.
Beef stew was unbeatable! Always feel satisfied coming out of Burdick's.
Went to Burdicks for a friend's birthday and the food was exceptional! We arrived a bit before our reservation and luckily caught the happy hour and had delicious oysters and nice cocktails for a great value. Started with soup appetizer and enjoyed the red snapper for 2 for dinner (again, exceptional!). We did leave disappointed that the high quality of food did not match the quality of service we received. We were left sitting for a while for a menu and the server forgot to get us an order of drinks. I worked as a server for a long time and understand that mistakes happen, but server never checked on us once throughout the entire meal. The overall apathy we received from the server during our dining experience left an unsettling overall impression.
We will definitely return - the food is phenomenal and Burdicks is a quality local treasure. I had to share because I really desired a high quality experience and it exceeded my expectations in every way in exception to the service.
Burdicks is the one restaurant I go to in America that rivals anything in Europe.
We will drive a couple hours for a meal there.
That probably says it all.
Another awesome meal. All 4 of us enjoyed the food, service and ambience.
We go to Burdicks every week. Always a treat. The staff are wonderful. Food is always excellent
Food was great for brunch and service was fabulous by Chelsea. Need to change winter menus for the frequent visitor.
We enjoyed our evening. Martini delicious. My starter petit goat cheese salad divine. Oysters perfect. Love the cozy atmosphere.
We will be back soon.
