With a reservation, or if allowed admission from the Bartender upstairs, you can experience The Rest. It is a subterranean gem that looks like a bar that Hemingway would have built. Dark wood, taxidermy, old books and plenty of good whiskey. Perfect place for privacy and escaping the world for a minute... Or hours.

Was an amazing dining experience. Food was excellent and the environment was a lot of fun. Will definitely return and reccomend.
Great, food staff and amazing drinks! We will definitely be back!

I LOVE the dark & creative atmosphere of this place! An amazing cocktail and delicious meal feels like a bonus.
It is always a fun time at the rest! We had cocktails/beer and a bottle of the decent white. I think my favorite dish was the paparadelle.
I love coming here for a special date or with an out of town friend. Such a cozy vibe. This last time, after we ordered drinks, and appetizers which were recommended by our server Louisa, we ordered an additional drink as well. We proceeded to order entrees. This all sounds normal right? Well about 3 bites into my pork chop, which was delicious, we were told our table was needing to be vacated for another reservation. Huh? So our server moved us to a couch with a side table to eat dinner. It’s a little difficult to manage a pork chop on a side table that’s taller than you with a steak knife. I could tell Louisa felt bad moving us, and offered us free dessert. My date and I both used the restroom during this time and noticed our previous table was empty for another 45 minutes. I have no idea why we suddenly weren’t allowed to be in the dining area, but it was off putting. Our tab was $160+ for dinner and drinks. So it’s not like we were cheap. Maybe we smelled bad? Not sure. Totally weird. Would hesitate to return based on this experience where I was trying to impress my guest from another state.
Still one of the best places in all of Salt Lake City ... unless you're afraid of the dark. :)
Love The Rest, but wasn't thrilled that we had to wait at least 20 minutes to be seated after our reservation time, and after we ordered drinks our waiter kind of disappeared and we had a super long wait for our drinks to be made and to place our dinner order.
Super awesome small plates! Great to share and wonderful service.
This was a great experience! I was recommended the restaurant by a coworker and it did not disappoint. My fiancee loved it, the atmosphere was amazing, and the service was outstanding. My fiancee, who is a professional butcher, was very impressed by the steak he had. I also have celiac and was impressed with all the vegetarian and gluten-free options. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Atmosphere was awesome! Coming from daylight to the dark room was hard adjustment in the eyes. It’s pricey, but worth it for a one time experience.
The Rest provides you with an exceptional dining experience in a unique setting. Just waiting for the table, to have the door unlocked to enter, walking down the stairs and entering a dark, eclectic space with vinyl records playing was an awesome start to a delicious dinner. Thank you
Very unique dining experience forSLC. You are greeted inside an upscale dive bar and when given permission (reservation). You are taken to the basement and seated in an intimate classy bar/restaurant. Excellent drinks, food was good. Defiantly will try again.
Get a reservation if you want a table for dinner. Limited seasonal menu with some standouts that repeat, including a beer can chicken that can serve 3-4. Deep fried steak -- it is not what you think -- was fabulous. Small plates, 6-8 entrees is my impression, specialty cocktails, limited wine and beer menus that do the trick, and full bar. Vinyl on the turntable vibe, dim lighting, and wonderful service. Gets crowded. Bodega upstairs is hiding this find in the basement.
I love the rest! I always have a great time here and it is a must see if you are visiting Salt Lake. Their menu changes every season but the quality of their beverages and food is always consistent. They never disappoint. My friend and I ordered a couple appetizers and beverages while we waited for our beer can chicken which was well worth the wait. It was nice to catch up with my friend and listen to great vinyls in the background. The rest is the best kept secret in SLC.
I took my wife here for her birthday. It was an amazing experience all around. The beer can chicken, which takes an hour to cook, is to die for.
Amazing service. Delicious food. Handcrafted thoughtful beverages. Quiet vibey ambiance. A real treat!
Absolutely fabulous! Service, cocktails, food. Just a wonderful experience.
Excellent food, wonderful cocktails. Great place for a cozy date night.
Loved it. Will be back.
What memories I make here.
Food was very cool take on a lot of classic dishes. But the highlight for us was the cocktails and ambiance. We let the bartender choose what to make based on some flavor profiles the waitress walked us through. Service was top notch. I go to a lot of speakeasy cocktail bars around the country and this one is toward the top of the ones I have been to.
This is our favorite place to eat. The food is to die for and the drinks are amazing. 10/10 will come again.
Quaint atmosphere with a bit of an edgy vibe. Food was a bit disappointing. They serve the fried steak medium rare and I would have liked it cooked medium instead. And the beignets were doughy. Every thing is locally sourced though and was high quality. We will definitely go back and order something else.
So cool id call it super cool!
As usual, this place was unreal!
First time to the rest and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Reservations were easy to make, staff were very friendly and informative and the food was incredible.
Food was phenomenal, the specialty drinks were amazing , and the ambiance is very relaxing and inviting.
The most amazing venue, unique in all ways from the decor to the food to the drinks to the service, superior, unique and so like we were dining in our own private dining room and library. Food was amazingly special, delicious and fresh. Drinks were off the chart as the service was over 5 stars.
Always a good time spent at The Rest. Wonderful from the moment we stepped in the door until we left a few hours later. The food, the staff, the beautiful restaurant. All of it.
Fun and comfortable atmosphere. All the service is very polit and down to earth people. I was impressed by how happy and confident all the employees were.
Comfortable sitting. Incredible food and alcohol!
Amazing place with a great atmosphere, amazing cocktails and delicious food! The beer can chicken and the steak were cooked to perfection! Highly recommend a reservation, lots of people waiting outside.
The Rest is an interesting place. They don't advertise so it maintains an err of mystery. It's like a speakeasy, with competitive cocktails. These were some of the best drinks I've ever had.
One of my favorites in SLC!!!
Best ambiance! And the food was really delicious. Drinks were fantastic, wonderful experience! Pricey, but understandably so. Definitely make a reservation :) (you’ll feel a lot cooler being let in immediately rather than being told you’ll have to wait to get in).
Unique for Salt Lake City, unique in itself. The ambience is wonderful, the food is delicious. We ordered two flights of bitters (6 total) to try the flavors and then settled on two old fashioneds. I'll absolutely return.
Absolutely awesome and a can't miss when in Salt Lake City! Coolest experience, by far, during our recent conference. Who doesn't love an Old Fashion Flight with a variety of homemade bitters... A little research on the front end goes a long way!
Overall we like this restaurant. We had the beer chicken and the skin was a little too salty, but the chicken itself was very tender and delicious. Our server was not too helpful with suggestions or recommendations like the server at the next table was. We will go there again though for special occasions.
Best place to kill a couple hours before a show downtown.
The wife and I love this place. Wish we could eat there everyday. Though I doubt that would do my waistline and kidneys any good. Love the vibe. The vinyl playing made for a great two hours. Cocktails are amazing. The Beer Can Chicken and warm potato salad are incredible. And the charcuterie board is a must. Matt is the best. Looking forward to the next visit soon. Too bad it can’t come soon enough.
The chicken was awesome! The scallops were so salty I couldn’t eat them
