Lovely atmosphere, but limited menu -- balanced by an extensive wine list - very slow pace
A venerable Columbus restaurant for decades. I've never had a bad experience at The Refectory and always recommend it to friends or acquaintences who inquire about fine dining locations in town. I look forward to returning sometime soon for another exceptional meal and service.
I've had plenty of dining experiences ruined by bad food. I've had others ruined by poor service or mismanagement or cleanliness issues. But this was a first.
Our dining experience was ruined by...the decor and environment?
I chose the Refectory based in the reviews, the menu, and the training of the chef. It was the perfect plan for our 13th wedding anniversary. A special, no-child celebration to chime in year 14. A decadent meal eaten slowly, with conversation, without yelling, screaming, or thrown applesauce.
First of all, the service was good. Our server, although a bit strange and too intense, was attentive. The pace of the meal was slow, but that's very intentionally French.
And the food was sensational. My bison was tasty, cooked perfectly to my specifications, and surrounded by great accompanying notes. The mozzarella was so good. The sauces velvety. The rice light and fluffy. And everything worked so well together.
So, here's what went wrong. Within 5 minutes of being seated, I began to notice a very strong campfire smell. After 10 minutes, I felt nauseated. I had to excuse myself to get some fresh air. After 10 minutes outside, I felt normal again. I'd go inside, take a few bites, then be overcome again by the smoke.
I thought it was just me, but my wife also mentioned that it was irritating her eyes. Her contacts were drying out and she was getting overwhelmed too. I couldn't stomach finishing my dinner or drinks, and we both decided to skip dessert.
It was definitely a weird dinner, and a weird reason to not enjoy our night. I didn't expect this meal to be a financially reasonable night: it was supposed to be decadent and indulgent, but it did not meet my expectations in those regards. Despite the great food and service, it was not an enjoyable visit.
I'm unsure if a second visit is warranted. For as much as I enjoyed the food, the high cost for feeling ill is not something I'd like to revisit.
This was our first dining experience, had heard about The Refectory and had it on the list of places to try- IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The food was amazing and the service impeccable.
Best food I have had in Columbus!! The scallops were delicious, and the pear tart was amazing
A bit pretentious, felt a little uncomfortable
This place is always amazing, a true gem! The most romantic restaurant in Columbus with amazing food and an expert wait staff. Thank you for another great evening!
By far the best restaurant in Columbus for the quality of the food, wonderful service, very clean, and I have never been disappointed with anything here at the Refectory.
This restaurant is lives up to all the hype. Took my mother there for Mother's Day and she is hard to please because she is a cook plus well traveled. However, she did not complain Sunday she just could not eat all the food.
Everything about the experience was perfect! We highly recommend dining at the Refrectory!
We have eaten here a number of times and it never fails to have excellently prepared, unique and very tasty dishes. The ambiance is very nice and the service is outstanding. It is the best in Columbus for special-occasion dining.
The service, attention to detail, the food, all were exquisite!
I’ve eaten in fine dining restaurants all over and this place hands down has the highest quality service I have experienced stateside.
Very good, great food, great atmosphere
Lovely experience for our anniversary. The food was amazing, and we felt quite special with the complimentary champagne and mini dessert. Thank you!
As always, everything was absolutely perfect. The food and wine all marvelous. The service unbelievable. The staff and management made us feel like VIPS all evening.
The Refectory is simply in a class by itself in Columbus. I've had the great good fortune to eat in top tier restaurants all over the world, and the Refectory can hold its own against any of them. We are so lucky to have it here.
I thing the food is salty, the rest of the evening I was really thirsty and feeling very uncomfortable.
I was specting to eat something really special, something new, something unforgettable.
Still I like the restaurant. Thanks for the good service.
This is a favorite of me and my wife for special occasions. The menu is creative, every dish is a work of art in presentation, and a flavor delight. The wine list is extensive. I haven't tried any high-end wines, but the moderately priced ones are always excellent. There is an interesting offering of wines in the lobby of the restaurant. There are special evenings with live music, ranging from folk to opera. In a word, Superb!
Exellent service, amazing food!!
All the wait staff, from the bartender on were very friendly, helpful and attentive! My wife was very impressed with everything. This made for a very enjoyable celebration of our love!!! THANK YOU TO ALL!!!🤗
Service and food were excellent. Low key environment along with wonderful waitress made us very comfortable . No rushing to turn the table. Would defintely go back.
Food was amazing. Sommelier very knowledgable with fun new things to try. Love the Refectory as always!!
Always a place that will be remembered as an elegant memory.
The best restaurant in Central Ohio by far!
Everything was outstanding.
Will definitely be back
The service was good. The decor is a bit dated. We were seated in a private room which was also the wine cellar. When we sat down I noticed the charger at my place setting was greasy. I looked at the other chargers and most had crumbs or food on them. My mother pointed hers out to the waiter and he apologized but I was surprised
something like that was missed at a restaurant charging $100 plus per person. The food was interesting and well seasoned. I liked the arugula artichoke salad, the bison and the pear tart.
Appreciated the attention to detail for our 50th anniversary that we celebrated with our children.
The service was outstanding, from both the waiter and sommelier. We allowed the chef to create a five course dinner for us, it was amazing. He put together tastes and textures beyond belief, each course led beautifully into the next. The sommelier paired the wines perfectly with the food and each wine brought out the flavors of each course to their fullest. Our waiter was so professional, explaining the food creations at great length. He made sure we had everything we needed and found just the right amount of presence at our table. This was a dining experience we will never forget and likely never again match.
Great food. Great service. Friendly hosts and waiters and waitresses. Best restaurant in Columbus
The Refectory has become my favorite place for special occasions. My fiancé and I have celebrated a 50th birthday here, as well as having gotten engaged here. The meals were excellent, the service is second to none. We always get detailed information about specials. The staff is incredibly well-prepared to speak to anything on the menu.
The food and the service at the Refectory was outstanding as usual. But everyone went above and beyond by making my elderly mother feel like a queen on her birthday. She appreciated the extra special touches such as the birthday card wishes on the table and the lighted candle on her dessert. My special request to be seated near the entrance so my handicapped mother could walk to our table was honored and appreciated. Thank you for a very special evening!!!
Superb as always.
Outstanding cuisine, superb service, excellent atmosphere and ambiance, good value and what more could you want!
The service was impeccable. Incredible food. It is a great place to eat for a special occasion.
Very good meal. Only complaint is that Happy Hour prices only apply to those sitting at the bar, not to those sitting in the bar section.
As always, excellent food and excellent service, once you have been, you will always want to go back, if you have not tried the Refectory yet, go you will not be disappointed.Check out their web site for all the amazing specials.
We brought out of town friends who we see about once a year because we knew they would enjoy the ambiance and the food, and we were right, they had a very
First time going and I will be back. A little pricey but well worth it. The food and atmosphere was excellent.
Yet another fantastic experience at The Refectory! Not only is the food amazing and inspired but the service is incredible. Thank you for making our anniversary a terrific experience!
