The Refectory Restaurant & Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Although my order was messed up, I ordered gluten-free and it did not come out gluten-free, the staff and management did the right thing and comped my meal. The food and service here are usually impeccable. I rated it as I usually find it although the staff was a little down this particular night. I’ve never been there when the staff has mixed up so much at our table. With each course , they placed the food in front of the wrong people. It’s really no big deal and it didn’t diminish my love for this restaurant. It just was very strange because usually they are spot on. We will be back and actually signed up for one of the jazz dinners in February
Venison rack for two from the Game menu was a delight. Very generous roast was easily enough for 3. Superb tenderness and flavor. Presentation was gorgeous. Excellent Bordeaux pairing by John. Remainder of the meal— squab, beet salad, and creme brûlée likewise. Unrushed and comfortable meal on a bitter cold winter night.
The restauraunt was freezing when we arrived at opening, and never warmed up during our visit..And, we were close to the fireplace that seemed to be the only heat source...The meal selection was very unique and many dishes we never heard of..Food presentation was very nice. We took pics of everything..The bread was great, the steak so-so, the vegetables wonderful, the desert perfect...Service was fantastic.. Maybe going later in the eavening would result in a warmer visit...
We love Refectory. The experience is different than anywhere else in Columbus. Definitely go there with the idea that each course will take a bit to get out of the kitchen. It’s more the experience than a get-in, get-out restaurant. The atmosphere is quiet and romantic. The wine selection is fabulous and I love that they offer small wine pours as well. We enjoy the experience overall.
Horrible New Years Eve experience! Had a 7:45 reservation for their special 5 course chef's menu. Seated at 8pm and didn't get done until 11:40pm!! Ruined our New Years Eve plans!
I've had 12 course Chef's Tables in NYC that didn't take that long! Time between courses was sometimes 30 minutes.
We had to miss the rest of our evenings plans to celebrate the New Year at a party. Instead we had a frustrating night and wasted over $300!!
Will never visit again. Very disappointed as we had always dreamed of going to this famous restautant but always balked because of their inflated prices. Very sad.
Portions were EXTREMELY small also. $50 for a mediocre 5oz filet was also RIDICULOUS. They did have the BEST scallops we have ever had, but there were only 3 of them and very small.
The entire evening a woman in the room talked in a loud, bositerous and obnoxious manner distrubing EVERYONE. The staff refused to ask her to quiet down. She was so loud you could hear her OVER the singer and guitarist!
Wish I could get my $300 back! (The wine flight and the two guitarists were FANTASTIC though.. only highlight)
My wife and I spent New Year's Eve at the Refectory. Their special menu and live music made for a festive and gastronomic success. We met friends there and spent several hours dining and conversing with no feeling of being hurried along.
The servers and sommelier were adroit and helpful the entire evening, even though the room was full all night.
The five course meal was very French and exceptional. The wine was superb and reasonably priced.
All-in-all, we had a wonderful evening and plan on returning soon.
Took my parents to The Refrectory for their 67th wedding anniversary as the restaurant is one of my mother’s favorites. Had asked for a quite table but was originally seated in a very noisy/traffic area near the wait stations and corridor up the choir room where Saturday night jazz was playing. The maitre d’ realized the mistake after a time and we were move to a quieter table.
The food is always excellent and I appreciate the restaurant recognizing the mistake and correcting it. Simply wish they had been more careful in reviewing and executing on my request in the Open Table reservation.
That said, The Refrectory is always an exceptional dining experience.
We had a wonderful evening. We arrived a few minutes late due to weather, and it took a little time to prepare our table. Then there was complimentary champagne celebrating my wife's birthday. Thank you. Following was a confusing 20 minute interlude while we were basically ignored. Then the menus were brought and the evening proceeded as one would expect. Delightful banter with our waiter, wonderful exciting selection of dishes. Our entree's of Lamb and Antilope were excellently prepared and delicious. Thank you for an overall splendid evening.
We were there on Christmas Eve. The place was jammed but not uncomfortably so. The service in the dining room was outstanding which, IMO, can make or break your experience. The food was very good and presented beautifully. Our waiter offered to pair wines with each course and he did a great job! The food category is minus one star because my husband's dinner was not that good. Perhaps it was a fluke, as every other course was fantastic! Needless to say, we have every intention of going back as the menu that night was limited. If you have a special occasion to celebrate or just enjoy good food, service, and ambiance, this is your place!
Excellent Food and Wine, the best in Columbus. As a person who travels 4-5 times a year to Europe for business and business dinners, I can say this is one of the finest overall experiences I have had anywhere in the world. Foie Gras appetizer, beets salad and duck entrée were amazing!
After probably 20+ visits, as usual, our experience was outstanding. The service, atmosphere, and general feeling was the best. The menu is creative and interesting, and you are tempted to order one of everything. My wife loves the wine selection. The food was excellent, but frankly not quite as sensational as in past visits. This could be due to the fact we both ordered something out of our comfort zone, and it was maybe not what we expected. But that's on us.
Superb rack of lamb; perfectly cooked and the sauce was a delight. Well balanced meal included a tasty and seasonal sweet potato soup as well as a beet salad . Flavors consistory good and the meal flowed well. Courses built up to a wonderful pear tart. John’s edgy wine recommendation a great success. Perhaps the nicest meal I’ve had at this restaurant.
Our group really enjoyed out dinner. There were eight of us, and we were sat at a round table which allowed us to talk all together rather than at a rectangle where people can only talk with those near by. We chose a variety of entrees and were all impressed with the taste as well as the appearance of each meal. We had expected a hefty price and were not disappointed there either, but no one complained and we all had enough to eat; some even took part of their dinners home. We will not afford to go often, but several people suggested we try the bistro next time which has a smaller price tag. I was a good night for all of us.
