About The Reef of St. Augustine

The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Bob Henle has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

Went with my boyfriend, mom, and sister. It's a family favorite for brunch with my very large extended family and the service never disappoints! Great view, delicious food, and wonderful ambiance. Large groups and intimate meals, you can't go wrong. It's also a great place because you can make it as fancy or as casual as you want. It's a nice stop before exploring downtown St. Augustine, or relax after. Just be prepared to be paying for the quality of experience, most plates are $20 and up, and not a terrible amount of vegan or vegetarian options.

What a storm on that day! We were happy to find The Reef on our way, and stop for Chowder and Fish&Chip. Both excellent. Service was friendly and efficient.

We made a reservation weeks ago for Christmas Eve. We had a delicious dinner at The Reef in November, and we were anticipating another excellent dinner with our two children. We arrived at 6:15pm and parked across the busy beach road. We asked for a table that had more light, but we were seated at a table near an entry way and had one candle to read the menu. I pulled out a little flashlight since my husband has poor eyesight. Our children used their cell phones for light. We asked to be moved and did so. I actually felt that we were intruding and were just walk ins. FYI. That table sat empty the rest of the night. Dinner was disappointing. Tuna was tasteless, crab cake had little crab, salmon was burned on the top, and my scallops and rice were tasty. Poor rendition of a Caesar salad.
There are plenty more restaurants in St. Augustine.

Ate at The Reef for Christmas Eve. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and the waiter anticipated our needs. Definitely will return to try other items on the menu.

Not worth it. We received terrible service; an hour to bring salads and app, not offered bread, and entrees were lukewarm. Food had potential to be better, but prob not. Save your money, don't visit.

Love this place. Have never had a bad meal here even when it is crazy busy like at Christmas time.

A superb fine - My husband and I found this restaurant to be outstanding - the food, the atmosphere, and the service. Our server, Douglas, was marvelous to us - very attentive and friendly. The manager also chatted with us. Wish this restaurant were closer to us!

Even though we had made reserarations they were not prepared for us. After waiting several minutes as they set up a table they put us in a room where there was a holiday party going on. We requested another table in a different room because we could not carry on a conversation.
The waitress was as attentive as she could be but she simply have too many customers assigned to her. I feel the problem was at the hostess station. They simplly did not do a good job. The food was very good but I would not go back due to the poor front end service

We live in PVB and we wanted a location to meet a relative driving from St. Augustine. The food, location and waterfront view made our night. Although, it is necessary to dine earlier than we normally do, we were very happy with the choice. Our server was very kind and attentive. The food was tasty and well prepared.

Food was good. Ceasar Salad lettuce was limp, mix with it was good. Lobster and Shrimp Risotta was great, a little rich. Prime Rib with mashed potatoes were good - green string beans excellent.

Waitress personable and helpful.

Disappointing beach side restaurant. The food was not up to the description and overpriced for the value. Lobster was very salty and of a grayish color. Being local to the area, I am disappointed that this is a representation for tourists.
