About The Reef of St. Augustine

The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Bob Henle has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

Waitress was busy but not good. She tried to make excuses for her business instead of just apologize and ask for help.

2nd time for brunch. Both times had great selections. Waffles could have been a little more crisp/flakey on outside and true Mini Belgian style to be ‘perfect’. Always love the hibiscus that comes with brunch, grits are fabulous, Alaskan crab legs made wonderfully. Not enough time or stomach to eat as much as I would have liked. Great view as always. Definitely will continue to go and a great spot to brunch with the girlfriends or significant other.

Loved the reef food was outstanding and outdoor seating on the beach was amazing. Will be back soon for the great happy hour and will bring my dog as dogs are allowed on the "dog deck". The reef I highly recommend it.

Went to The Reef for Valentine’s Day. Won’t be going back anytime soon. Both of our entrees arrived cold - including all the sides. While they offered to offer some compensation on one of our meals, I would have preferred them getting our food right the first time and both of our meals arriving at the same time. Too bad, because it could have been a great evening.

Absolutely wonderful Valentine's dinner !
Everything was marvelous...the meal, the service, & the ambiance. I had the Lobster Risoto which was so delicious & my husband had the Grouper special..both fantastic! Dessert was yummy too!! I highly recommended the Reef for fine dining!

My boyfriend and I went for an early birthday and Valentine's Day dinner and we were not disappointed! Our server, Ryan, was fantastic from start to finish. We were not rushed through our appetizer (Fried Green Tomatoes - delicious) and we were able to have nice conversation while waiting for our entrees (Prime Rib - as perfect as expected) to arrive. It's not often we get out for a date night and are not rushed.

I highly recommend the Reef to anyone for any occasion.

We loved the reef! Our waiter, Dennis, was amazing and so funny! He was really attentive to our needs and we were impressed with the food. It was pretty noisy but I think that had to do with two large groups that were there at the same time. Would go again!

Our server, James was awesome. Knowledgeable of the items we ordered and the specials. Gave us just enough space. His timing wad prefect. The wine, apps and dessert were great. The main entry was marginal for me. I could of been having an off day. I would try it again, when we can sit outside.

Had a group of teammates in from out of town - wanted a nice dinner by the water. It was a beautiful night for that. Food was great - had the seafood trio and it was delicious. The blueberry creme brûlée was “ok” - don’t think it was freshly made as the custard had peeled away from the sides and the sugar topping was soft. Other that that, it was a nice evening - we all enjoyed ourselves.

The Ref is great - one of our all-time favorite restaurants! Don't miss the deep fried manchego cheese, the molasses bread and be sure to have a key lime pie martini for desert!

The salad and soup arrived just two minutes before the main course. Bad start. The waitress kept passing our table saying "I'll be right back", but came back 5-10 minutes or more later... with so many excuses about why the salad/soup did not arrive earlier. The main course was cold due to the fact that we were eating our salad's. The restaurant was not so busy (our reservation was for 630). A complimentary glass of wine was delivered to smooth over the fact that the evening was a mess. Past visits have been better. It will be a while before we go back.

Went with my boyfriend, mom, and sister. It's a family favorite for brunch with my very large extended family and the service never disappoints! Great view, delicious food, and wonderful ambiance. Large groups and intimate meals, you can't go wrong. It's also a great place because you can make it as fancy or as casual as you want. It's a nice stop before exploring downtown St. Augustine, or relax after. Just be prepared to be paying for the quality of experience, most plates are $20 and up, and not a terrible amount of vegan or vegetarian options.

We made a reservation weeks ago for Christmas Eve. We had a delicious dinner at The Reef in November, and we were anticipating another excellent dinner with our two children. We arrived at 6:15pm and parked across the busy beach road. We asked for a table that had more light, but we were seated at a table near an entry way and had one candle to read the menu. I pulled out a little flashlight since my husband has poor eyesight. Our children used their cell phones for light. We asked to be moved and did so. I actually felt that we were intruding and were just walk ins. FYI. That table sat empty the rest of the night. Dinner was disappointing. Tuna was tasteless, crab cake had little crab, salmon was burned on the top, and my scallops and rice were tasty. Poor rendition of a Caesar salad.
There are plenty more restaurants in St. Augustine.
