The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Bob Henle has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

Went for our 1 yr. anniversary. The hostess acknowledged our special occasion with a polite Happy Anniversary. We requested a window table with our reservation. Didn’t get. Service was beyond slow. Our waiter was high as a kite. Waited for everything from drinks to dessert menu (which never came). The only thing we didn’t have to wait for was the check! The Lobster and Shrimp Risotto was good; the lobster was tough; the shrimp - fabulous. The Lobster Tail dish was a big fail too - dry and tough. We won’t be back. It was disappointing

We've been going to The Reef for several years to celebrate our anniversary. It fell on a Saturday this year and the parking lot was full so we worried that our reservations would not be honored quickly. But true to their standards, we were seated according to our reservation request in short order. Service was great and so was the citrus salmon. Our waiter was generous and treated us to one of the salty caramel deserts at no additional cost. Too bad hurricanes Matthew and Irma has eroded much of the dunes on the Atlantic side of the restaurant and the owners will have to pay a lot of money for a seawall. So support this fine restaurant and keep them going for years to come.

Love that they still use “white tablecloths”, without being pricey..great place for nice quite conversation ...ocean front views...great place for special occasions...been going to The Reef for over 30 years

We had an outdoor table overlooking the Atlantic. It was quiet and our server, Matthew, was very attentive. The food was very good and even though the Mahi Mahi was unavailable, the suggested substitute was good. This appears to be a very busy place and reservations are highly recommended.

The reef is excellent I go there for all occasions also for Sunday brunch.Ths was a treat from my husband for my birthday.It was wonderful!

This was my second time to The Reef and I enjoyed it even more than the first. Set overlooking the beautiful stretch of beach and Pacific Ocean, we thoroughly enjoyed not only the amazing fresh seafood but also the terrific wine list and service. Highly recommend!

The reef is situated on the Atlantic Ocean near St. Augustine, Fl. The Restraunt has an excellent bar, linen tablecloths and napkins, inside and outside options, excellent views and nice atmosphere. The chef is excellent but the menu is limited. It's no national chain. It has a stead amount of locals. I would suggest a reservatin. Especially for the buffet and weekends. The staff doesn't hover or rush you. I enjoy the large scallops dish, tacos, and the daily suggestions should be taken into consideration. The chef also does some decadent deserts. I suggest it to friends and guest frequently.

Beautiful location and food was very good. Think the wait staff we had was new - took my husbands drink order and walked away without mine - asked if we wanted menus - we were in the dining room :). Probably just inexperienced. Very nice place.

Everything was good , But i feel the hot spices that seem to come with most meals should not be put into the food this is a. sea food area not a latino restaurant .

Our waiter (whose name I cannot remember but I know that he used to work in Charleston SC) was informative, friendly and very helpful. He made us feel welcome and was kind to our children. The food was wonderful and the view is unbeatable. It is our favorite restaurant in the St. Augustine area!

We made the reservation through Open Table, on the way to the restaurant I see an email where there restaurant canceled my reservation. We were almost there so we decided to go in and inquire why the reservation was canceled. When I told the hostess that I made a reservation but the restaurant canceled it and I would like to know why, I got a blank look and one of them says, must been a mistake. Maybe some with same first name called to cancel and they got the wrong reservation. I’m not amused with her answer or her I could care less attitude. We ask for a table, oh there is a wait. So I wait, only to find the food was nothing like it usually is for their Sunday Brunch. The biscuit were cold, not covered and hard. The fresh fruit did not look so fresh, the mimosas were warm not even remotely chilled. The crab legs tasted like they had been cooked servers times and were mushy with a weird taste. Waffles tasted like they had been sitting for a while. 2 people with beverages included we spent $85.00 for subpar food and a not so great ecperience. Don’t think we will be going back for their brunch again.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food and drinks are consistently delicious and interesting and the view can't be beat. We love that they take reservations. The servers are knowledgeable and helpful. This time we brought some friends who have just moved to the area. We made a reservation early in the day for a late meal so there was plenty of time to plan for us and we requested a window table. However, we were put in a very dark corner. We reminded the hostess about our reservation and she said our party of 7 was too big to sit by the window. About half of the restaurant is window tables and we could see that there were tables available. All of us are over 60 and we had a very hard time reading the menu in the dark even though our server brought a couple of candles. The food and service were wonderful otherwise but our friends were a little disappointed because we had raved about the view. There was full moon that night and we missed seeing it rise over the water.

Great location and wonderful scenery. Tastefully decorated with matching service. Waitress (Laura) was most acommodating as well as knowledgable of menu items.
Overall experience was terrific and we will be sure to return when we are in the area again.

Wife and I went here one night on vacation for a date night. The food was fantastic! My wife had a fillet with lobster tail and I had the grilled seafood trio, both were great. If we come back to St. Augustine we will be going here again.

salmon was requested to be cooked well done with skin crispy. It was raw in the middle and skin was slimy.
My fish tacos tasted funny so I took the cabbage off to see if they tasted better. We had to get to the airport so we couldn't send food back. I was on the toilet and had an upset stomach all day.

Since the remodel the atmosphere and the food have been wonderful. The cauliflower risotto is a great vegetarian option.

We made the reservations and everything was perfect when we first got there. They sat us in a room FILLED with drunk people laughing and being super loud. Fine. I understand they can’t help that. Our waiter came and was great at first and super attentive. Then our food arrived and things turned to crap really fast. I must commend them on their food though which was amazing! Our waiter was HORRIBLE we constantly ran out of drinks and we had to wait 15 minutes on ANYTHING we asked for. He was more concerned with the drunks and trying to look cute obviously. Maybe if we had a different waiter things would have been better, but sadly that was not the case and we will NOT be back.

Very disappointing. We brought first time guests and we were embarrassed at the poor service.

In the first hour we only received our original beverages. Service never got any better.

We waited in line 12 minutes at the omelette station only to be told we order over easy or scrambled eggs at the table.

While we waited, we went back to the buffet line for waffles. The waffles were burnt up hockey pucks. They were so hard I couldn’t believe they actually were serving them. I brought it to the attention to one of the cooks who said he was aware of the problem and more waffles were on the way. Several minutes later, true to his word, he brought out fresh waffles. So the second batch of waffles and fruit were very good.

We finally received our eggs 20 minutes later. All four of us ordered eggs but when the orders arrived we were surprised to see that there was only one over easy egg and one tablespoon of scrambled eggs. It was the most ridiculously small amount of scrambled eggs I’ve ever seen. Then when my husband asked for toast he was told they don’t serve toast. So he asked for an English muffin since they were serving eggs Benedict and he was told by the assistant waiter he didn’t know if they could do that but he would check. Almost 20 minutes later my husband received half of an English muffin.

For the $40 per person price I thought I’d better try the crab legs since that seemed very popular and were being replenished regularly. The crab legs were good despite not having any claw crackers to crack the legs open I managed. I did ask for claw crackers from the waiter and did receive some but not before a snippy comment that the crackers were on the buffet. I apologized and said they were out on the buffet and that is why I was asking him.

I didn’t try anything else on the menu because our guests were disgusted and just wanted to leave. Two of us were celebrating birthdays and were sorely disappointed in our experience.

Great place to dine. Seated next to a window and had great views of the ocean. Food was excellent and had plenty. Had the chefs special. Creme brulee with blueberries was out of this word. Never felt rushed. Scott was fantastic. The bus boy was on top of keeking water filled and clearing dishes.

We were seated at a table in the bar area so we could have a window/ocean view, which was fabulous. The waitress seemed to have a definite attitude toward us. We were seated for 10 minutes before anyone approached. We placed an order for drinks and an appetizer. Drinks came, and we placed our order for dinner. It took 25 minutes and a reminder before the ap was brought out. 5 minutes after that our entrees came. The Grouper entree was served on a very hot plate (microwave) but the fish was lukewarm and rubbery so obviously cooked and then reheated. Overall a disappointment, especially since we have been dining at this location for 30 years (Compton’s prior to the Reef). You can’t beat the location, but not sure we’ll be back.

We go to The Reef for the setting: the view of the beach is breathtaking. The food is good. It tends to be a bit pricey, but not bad value for the money. I had the Salmon and it was fresh and tasty.
