Seafood
The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Greg Cooper has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

The restaurant was beautiful. The waiter was excellent. The food was overpriced and overcooked.

The Reef was just OK and nothing more. The waiter was disinterested to start, ordered 2 vodka and tonic cocktails and received vodka and water. My blackened mahi was good but my wife's prime rib was not medium rare as ordered and the au jus had no personality. The location on the beachfront is terrific, just wish the food and service matched it.

Excellent service provided by Greg. Chowder was great. Fried shrimp as expected, fish and chips was just ok. Breading on fish was soggy, like the oil wasn't brought up to temp before deep frying. Nice view.

I love the Reef. Miss their weekend brunch. Food was good, but not great as before. But will be back for the view.

Long wait. Reservation for 6:15, seated at 6:45. The dinning room that is just past the bar area accommodates very large groups on the upper level and the noise level in there makes it difficult for couples on the lower level to hear each other in conversation. The food however is absolutely excellent. Our waiter was quite slow but we looked at it as an opportunity to not feel rushed.

One of the best locations as it is directly on the beach. The server was very nice and helpful...she worked hard. The kitchen was slow, some of the food was lukewarm and the taste was just OK this time. We've been to the Reef several times and this was a bit of a disappointment. Still a great place to be on the ocean as there are, strangely, such limited choices in the Jax Metro area compared to other FL beach cities. We'll go again, but it might be a while before we do.

We made a reservation for a date night and were super excited to dine in as this place was recommended to us. We were sat outside, which we had requested and greeted shortly after. We ordered our drinks and appetizers at the same time, fried green tomatoes and fried cheese. Our server came back with our drinks and by then we were ready to order dinner. After we gave her our orders, we stressed that I had a SEVERE shellfish allergy and to please make sure that everything we ordered was prepared carefully. Our server reassured us that we would be taken care of and thanked us for letting her know. It took almost 30 minutes for the appetizers to come out - so long that our server offered us a soup and salad. Once the appetizers arrived, we started to eat them and within 10 minutes, my face and neck were covered in hives and super itchy. I then asked the server if the fryers used for the tomatoes and cheese were the same as the ones used to fry the seafood. She gasped and said “Oh my gosh!! I didn’t even think about that! I’m so sorry, let me get the manager!” Manager, Sharlene I believe was her name, comes out several minutes later. We told her what happened to which she replied “that’s not the story my server told me” and then said “at the bottom of the menu it gives a warning.” (The menu reads “Please talk with your server about any dietary/allergy needs.”) We were honestly planning on finishing the rest of our meal, however, we were so off put by the lack of accountability by the manager. There was not a single “I’m so sorry that happened” or “Are you okay?” throughout that entire interaction. We would have even be okay if they had told us at the beginning of the meal that they would not be able to accommodate my allergy as it would leave it up to US if we chose to dine there further. Overall, we were extremely disgusted by how the entire situation was handled and will not be recommending this place to anyone we speak to.
