The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Greg Cooper has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

We love The Reef and eat there at least twice a year when visiting St Augustine. The hostess made sure to seat us at a window because it was our anniversary. I hadn’t even requested it but she went out of her way to make it happen.

One of the best expierences I have had in a long time. The food was great but the people were better. Taylor was an excellent waitress and the young lady with mask that brings the food out was remarkable. Her spirit was contagious and gave me hope that we still have some great young people in this world.

This was our second time here. As was the case on our last visit, the service was great and the food was amazing. We've tried a few different items on the menu, this time we tried the fried green tomatoes - definitely recommended. Enjoy!

Weekend brunch menu is fire! Chicken and waffles, fried shrimp, mahi sandwich and Reef burger were all fabulous! Drinks we loved: Paloma, 1565, Perfect Mai Tai, and mimosa were so good we ordered a second round. Brandy was perfectly attentive as our server and her recommendations were excellent. Love love love!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The seafood chowder was excellent. Ambiance was great as we sat outside on a great day. Don’t order the fish and chips. Fish was soggy and they use the same terrible tourist french fries most of the local places are using now. If you want to find great fries with your meal, try Obi’s Filling Station. They just recently switched away from the tourist fries to something truly awesome.

We enjoyed our dinner at The Reef. The restaurant is lovely, and the food was delicious, but in my reservation, I requested a window seat. When I arrived and reminded the hostess that I requested a window seat, she summarily told me there was none available and sat us as far away from the windows as possible.This was a very special dinner with friends in from out of town celebrating two 65th birthdays and a 40th wedding anniversary. I was disappointed that I couldn't get the seating I requested.

Had our 30th anniversary dinner there. Got a great table overlooking the ocean. Everybody was so nice. From the hostess, bartender and waitress took great care of us. It has a very local vibe without the chain restaurant feel which is what we were looking for. We’ll be going back, the next time we visit.

Scallops were excellent. Not a fan of the gnocchi but still good. Mahi sandwich perfect balance of flavors without overpowering the fish. Service was very good. Could have used a larger glass of water to avoid need to continuously refill. Will be back. Food was very good.

Prime rib was supposed tho be served rare but we cooked through TWICE I believe I was served an end piece but the chef didn’t think far enough to cut a middle piece. If that was all that was left the chef shoud have told me instead of just a serving another cooked thru piece. There was also an excessive amount of fat Will not eat there again.

We had a positively wonderful experience at The Reef. The only little glitch was that my green beans were terrible! They looked old, and they tasted awful. But the server was perfect and offered to get me something else. I asked for a very small Caesar salad, which she promptly brought. It was excellent. We had a very nice time.
