The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Greg Cooper has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

The food was good. However, the service was very bad. It was almost as if our server didn’t want to be there, nor did he want us to be there. Everytime we asked him for something, he seemed very interested in serving us.

Had a delicious dinner with old friends. Following sharing the jumbo shrimp in datil sauce and fried green tomatoes as as appetizer, the citrus king salmon was delicious as usual. After I tried it the first time, I keep on ordering it every time that I frequent The Reef! We had a table by the window and enjoyed the beautiful beach and ocean. Our friends from Delaware really enjoyed the whole experience, as well!

Great beachfront location. Extensive menu starting with numerous seafood selections. Everyone in our party of four enjoyed their entree. Split pea soup was thought to be 'average' however. Candance was a very good server.

The food and atmosphere were excellent. The staff seemed overwhelmed for the amount of people today. The hostess was very quiet and not very welcoming. The waiter did not introduce himself and was gone for long period of times in one case for over 30 minutes.

I have been here before and the service was top notch. I will come again to see if today’s service was a fluke.

It was our first time at The Reef for Sunday brunch. My husband and I were very disappointed. The Food being served from chaffing dishes was warm at best. I’m pretty sure we will never go back.

While the Sunday brunch was disappointing, I have heard their dinners are good.
The brunch had fried chicken on the buffet but it wasn't fresh. Hot food was cold so it was very unappetizing.

Maybe I shouldn’t have ordered beef at the seafood restaurant. The prime rib was tough. Our waiter was wonderful. The bread and mashed potatoes were the highlight of my meal.

we went with another couple celebrating both of our anniversaries. The food was excellent. They were totally under staffed as we waited 45minutes after our drinks to place order. which was not good. This was my second time but will have to think about going again. We did have reservations and were seated right away.

Grateful that a table was available for our reservation but was disappointed that they made no effort to accommodate our request for a round table request so the 80 year old we were celebrating that day could see and hear all the parties at the table as lip reading is required. Although they had the exact table we wanted they would not bend their policy in order to save the round table for a party of 6 and we had 5. I thought this was shortsighted and was not well received.

While our waiter was very thoughtful, the pace of the meal was exceedingly long (2.5+ hours) despite the fact that we knew what we wanted right away and ordered as soon as he finally returned to take our order. Drinks were slow to come out and we finally had to ask for the bread that was promised. Since the restaurant was not full at the time and we were the only table seated in our section I think it is safe to say that is the norm.

The serving sizes were very small so I did not feel they were of good value at all. Food was good but not very hot, again reverts back to the timing/pace of the meal.

The view was very nice and I can imagine would be lovely in the warm Spring months. Our table was inside as the evening was cool but the table was very poorly illuminated due to the duct work above that blocked the only overhead lighting. Half our table was in the dark and the other half was lightly illuminated, again this made it very difficult for the lip reading. Meanwhile the round table we requested was nicely illuminated and was unoccupied for at least the first hour of our seating...still a sore spot.

Overall I would not venture there again if in the area as they did not do enough to earn a return visit.

An excellent lunch today with first class service from Dennis W. He knew his menu (food and wine) and has been almost the only waiter during our stay in the St. Augustine area over the last few weeks who has treated the lady with courtesy and respect. The Reef is definitely a restaurant not an eatery. Well done.

We had an ocean view table. Happy hour wine was reasonable. The bread was outstanding. I had sauteed grouper and my husband had grilled grouper and we both enjoyed our meal. We ended with coffee and bread pudding. Enjoyable dinner out!

We had reservations on Saturday night- We arrived on time and was seated promptly- The waiter couldn't have been more friendly nor knowledgeable of the food- if we could have hear him- the noise level was so loud we couldn't hear our waiter nor the conversation at our table. I had a headache by the time we left.

I also had a problem with parking- we had to cross A1A at 7 oclock at night with cars flying by- very scary.

The 4 of us had a lovely dinner at The Reef. We had made reservations and were taken directly to a perfect table at the window. We could watch the surfers and beach combers while we enjoyed an excellent meal. They were able to accommodate food sensitivities which was much appreciated. This was the last evening for our friends vacation so a nice way to finish the holiday here in St Augustine. Food...very good. Very good waiter.

Overall food was good. Server, although alittle too freindly and into sharing more about himself than we thought he should, was attentive and knew the menu well.

Went as a double date celebrating a belated Valentines day. Almost all orders were amazing except for the Valentines Day Special, the steak had a grey sauce (something mixed with blue cheese) that was unpleasant. But once the sauce was scraped off, the steak was good.

Great experience and even though it was a rainy, windy night, the view of the ocean was amazing! We will be back!

Pluses: Our window ocean view was great!
Our server, Jacob, was professional and on point with constant follow-up.

Minuses: The noise level was high and distracting.
The quality of our meals was fair; the coconut shrimp was overcooked. My jambalaya was swimming in excess oil.

We prefer another restaurant that is nearby.

Went to celebrate our Anniversary. Though we have been there for happy hour and the Sunday buffet, this was our first dinner at the Reef. Server was very pleasant but seemed somewhat disorganized. Fairly long wait for our drinks. Appetizer was coconut shrimp- they were pretty much burnt so not much taste. The bread however was delicious. We went during happy hour so house wines and well drinks were only $5. I had prime rib which was cooked perfectly. My husband was very pleased with his jambalaya. It was quite busy the entire time we were there but didn’t seem hectic. The manager was everywhere, busing tables, taking drink orders, greeting guests and generally on top of everything. We were glad we went
