The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Greg Cooper has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

The waitstaff was great! The view is beautiful. The food was good but not a fine dining brunch. The eggs were not fresh but rather a spongy egg substitute consistency. Good enough to eat and to go for the view.

Brunch was lovely. We were given a lovely table against the windows overlooking the beach. The Grouper Vilano and Lobster Benedict were outstanding. Jessica, our server was terrific.

The million dollar view of the Atlantic is amazing. Never disappoints. The food is fresh and always delicious. My favorite is their spicy seafood chowder.

Extremely noisy from the kitchen. We went for our 22 wedding anniversary and entire dinner we could not hear each other over the clanging of dishes and silverware. The waiter was more then apologetic and gave us a dessert on the house.

Celebrating our anniversary with a glass of wine. My husband always orders the grouper Parmesan and as usual, loved it. I had the braised beef which is fairly new in the menu. It was fabulous! So tender you don’t need a knife! Still love the Reef after so many years!❤️

We went to the Reef for a 39th anniversary lunch the service was excellent however my wife’s lunch was just ok. She ordered her favorite a grouper sandwich and the piece of grouper was 2 inches high and 2 inches wide more like a roll than what we normally get a filet. She just took it out of the bun and ate it like a meal vs a sandwich. It tasted good just not possible to eat like a sandwich what she ordered. A little disappointing but everything else went well.

Slow service (VERY friendly to be fair), flat Prosecco (obviously from the day before), baked potato soup (it was bisque) tasted like from the bag or can, black & blue salad was overdone and cold, coconut shrimp had about three shavings of coconut each. I feel like these numbers are generous! Location is amazing… extra point for that. We may not return, however, unless someone takes charge of the ship… sinking on The Reef. Sorry if harsh. I’ve decided to post true reviews of every meal at every restaurant I book on here. I’m sure I’ll get hate mail with excuses or telling me I’m not empathetic. There is no excuse for a poor experience at a restaurant advertising here. I AM empathetic… to every user who may use this app to find great food and experiences.

Our server was excellent, as well as the food. I made the reservation with a special request to sit next to window with view and notified of birthday celebration. We were seated second table away from window next to a party on 15 or more. Not ideal for a specific request

The Greek omelette was excellent. The Waffle burger was poor. The waffles were awful just squares of tasteless dough. It was missing the egg that was to be part of the build. The strawberry cream cheese waffles came with the tasteless waffles instead of the crunchy Belgian type that is the norm. I sent it back and was told they sent the wrong waffles and it was replaced and delivered with no apology. When the proper waffles arrived they were good as usual.

Had their duck and peppers appetizer - excellent. Also enjoyed shrimp and grits in a datil pepper sauce and mahi also in a different datil pepper sauce. Regular martini was excellent as well! Banyan our waiter was very pleasant and attentive which we really appreciated!

The views of the ocean are great, but the hostess was very rude. Not only she did not check me in, but also ignored my request of a window table and the note of a celebration of a birthday. When I asked if we could see if the bar had tables by the window, she left us there, turned around and went back to her post... The food was good but very stingy. My portion on mahi was super small and thin. The bar tender and the drinks he prepared were great.

Service was well coordinated. View is lovely as sits right on beach. I had a salmon dish over fried spinach. Delicious. Hubby had a steak salad. It was filled with tasty grilled steak…most we ever saw on a salad. Yummy!! The drive over from historic district was easy and peaceful.

We had our dinner outside facing the ocean while the evening turned dark and it was the best ambience ever, watching and listening to the ocean waves crashing on the shore, as the stars came out. Food was pretty good; the seafood dishes much tastier than the prime rib, which was kind of tough. Cocktails were imaginative and lent themselves well to the seaside view. Best item we had was the fresh catch grouper. Service was great--friendly, prompt, and helpful.

Have been going here for lunch for about 7 years and we've always have a waiter/waitress that was polite and attentive and even took some pictures for us. They have a large variety menu and most all meals are delicious and well prepared.

We were celebrating my father-in-laws 85th birthday. We made sure to put that on our reservation, the birthday was never acknowledged. Two at our table ordered the grouper Vilano and it was extremely over seasoned. Also, the side of rice was gummy and a weird texture. Very dissatisfied with that dish, because it was highly recommended by the server. This is the first time booking with OpenTable that a celebration wasn’t acknowledged by the hostess or server. Extremely disappointing. It’s a shame the food wasn’t edible.
