The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Greg Cooper has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

Great service, ambiance and food. Couple of expresso drinks were not very good. Prices on web site need to be updated! Very misleading and really false advertising. But yes, we’d enjoy dinner again!

Our waitress was really good, food pretty good, but salmon for both of us could have been cooked more. Our fault as we should have said not so raw, or sent it back to cook more. We're locals, so we've been there numerous times.

Our server was excellent. Food was good and the prices are comparable to our upscale places. Biggest problem is finding a parking spot.

There were four of us for dinner, the meals were excellent. The server never introduced herself and barely smiled. Her service was good, but not warm and fuzzy, we had dinner there two weeks ago, and our server Banyan was friend and very memorable. I did tell the young lady that she had a lovely smile thinking that maybe she wasn’t having a good day. We will return, it is definitely an excellent restaurant. We have been there several times and never had the same server, which is kind of strange.

We had a reservation to dine at The Reef. When we arrived we asked to be seated outside. The first young lady said it was full. While we waited it emptied out and we asked the Second Lady at the hostess stand if we could sit outside. She basically said, “We don’t want to seat you there because we have large parties in the dining room and we don’t want you to be neglected.” But not delivered as nicely as that. So dinner started with that attitude. They seated us on a window which was very pleasant. After 30 minutes they brought our drinks. It took equally long to get dinner if not longer. I ordered the snow crab legs, ate 4 and realized they were over cooked and I was not given a cracker to even open the claws with. I waited on the waitress to return but it took so long all the crab legs were completely cold and inedible. I gave her the full plate and she apologized. When the bill came, they had not removed the crab legs. I had to tell her to remove it. Of note, they tell you they can make anything surf and turf. So my visiting guest ordered shrimp with his filet. They brought him 2 scallops and they were $8 a piece! Not a great experience all around so will not return.
