Caeser salad was made up of whole romaine leaves. Not terribly easy to handle. It wasn't what I expected a caesar salad to look like. Clumsy presentation.
Service, however, was outstanding.
Overall excellent, had a two-year-old and an 82-year-old with me, the red onion made our dining Experience pleasurable.
Great food service and atmosphere! Our server Joe was very friendly and attentive. Would def go back!
Fabulous food, great wine, and excellent service. A bit pricey, but worth it! We had a lovely time.
Attentive wait staff made our dinner enjoyable. Recommend!
Red Onion is one of our favorite local restaurants.
Food was tasty & interesting. Very nice presentation. Dined early, so quiet. Charming atmosphere. I think my new regular restaurant.
The bartender is first rate. The salad definitely shareable. The duck was great. The rabbit not so much. Poached pear desert delicious.
Beautiful, quaint restaurant off the beaten path. Food was delicious. Intimate and nice ambiance. The tables are a little too small. Feels like they’re trying to put too many tables in a small area. Their four tops would comfortably fit two. The server did not pay very much attention (my meal contained items I specifically requested NOT to be included) but all the other staff was fabulous.
Our favorite restaurant in the Woodstock area!! Every tim
outstanding food ,creative , presentation the top, attentive staff, favorite restaurant
We loved the bartender and really enjoyed our meal too.....our table server was a bit frazzled and it showed....other than that a top notch time! The trout salad was off the hook, I've never had anything like it.
Mediocre and, in my opinion, bland food (had trout and pappardelle), but good service and nice atmosphere.
Beautiful, warm and cozy restaurant. We had an excellent meal, starting with the guacamole (house made and nicely fresh) followed by the duck breast ("cooked perfectly" according to my wife) and the seafood risotto (with an amazing selection/amount of seafood).
Service was excellent -- timely, engaging yet not overly intrusive.
The food and service was excellent as always. We had the monkfish, and it was amazing. The host said they only have it a few times a year. If you ever get the chance we highly recommend it.
This is a gem in the Saugerties/Woodstock area. Wonderful food. Tables are close but definitely worth going out of your way to get there. Popular with locals so do make a reservation to be sure you can be seated.
Could have been a lovely meal if our server was even least slightly interested in guiding us through the menu. Instead she seemed vaguely disgruntled that we were there at all, answered no questions and provided pretty much zero insight into the preparation of dishes on the menu when asked. The food was decent, in that old school oversauced, gelatinous way. I wish I could say we enjoyed our meal to kick off my birthday weekend, but we didn’t at all. In the future The Red Onion should decline a late reservation (9:30 on a Saturday night) if it’s too late for their staff. Diner’s should never feel uncomfortable.
This was our 1st visit to Red Onion...live approx. an hour away and have been wanting to go for years. Arrived early for table, so got a drink at the bar. One drink was good, but sweet, so I asked bartender to adjust and he happily offered a couple options and obliged. Our waitress was good, but not warm and fuzzy. Food was amazing and we would definitely recommend and will be back again!
Amazing! Just go and have the most wonderful dinner, ever!
Dining out at the Red Onion is consistently a wonderful experience!!!!
The most amazing rack of lamb I’ve had in ages. Not cheap, but they’re generous with portions. Top notch service. We were there on vacation, or I would say I cannot wait to return very soon!
One of the best restaurants around. Excellent menu, great food, good service. We had fish and chips and the vegetable curry with chicken. Highly recommend both.
Food is always excellent . This is my favorite go to restaurant. The menu is not overly large which I actually like. There is always the standard fare with a few specials sprinkled in.
My friend and I both got the North Carolina sea bass with a parsnip puree and asparagus in a buerre blanc sauce ... it was transportive and heavenly . Highly recommend this restaurant but make sure to make a reservation on open table as the food is so delicious it gets booked up fast !
Uploaded a photo, it does not do this dish justice ...
12/24/17 Dinner service: Terrible service, the waitress never asked how our food was, never asked if we wanted another glass of wine and most importantly never cracked a smile and showed absolutely no enthusiasm for being there.
I know no one wants to work on Xmas eve, but we were really looking forward to this meal having never dined here before. I was embarrassed in front of my guests for having suggested such a place. I was under the impression that it was a fine dining establishment.
It’s really too bad because the food was good. We will never dine here again.
What a great restaurant. I’ve been all over the world and been to some really good restaurants. The food at the RO arrives hot looks and tastes excellent and the service style unique. What more can one ask?
Best liver dish ever anywhere
Everything is great
A must go for anything anytime
New York Strip Steak, mountain of mashed potato and cream spinach was excellent and my husband got the Lamb Chops seasoned perfectly. Very good wine selection, and very friendly service.
Great food and service
What can we say, TRY IT
Great meal from start to finish
You feel welcomed from the moment you step inside.
Wait staff top notch and the food is even better.
Service was excellent. As professional in the business, I was surprised that almost every entree that passed my table had mashed potatoes. The appetizers were interesting and flavorful, but I wish our server would have mentioned how strange our choices were as they came together. Spicy beef salad and the pate really clashed. The pate—both kinds—were the best part of the meal.
Never betray our expectations. Only thing is that they don't change menus much. I guess they are confident on them. House cured sardines and duck breast are my favorites. Highly recommended.
I have lived in Woodstock each spring and fall for the past three years. My wife and I dine at Red Onion10-12 times during those 20 weeks. It is consistently excellent—no one does duck breast better—but not very daring with pork or seafood. That seems to be a common slight in Hudson Valley menus. And I can not grasp why no one grills fish. Pan frying and oven roasting can not come close to mesquite grilled. All these chefs need to visit Texas.
This restaurant is one of my favorites in the Hudson River Valley. You need to reserve well in advance if you want a Saturday night table in prime time.
This has been our go-to restaurant for our anniversary dinner for a few years now. It always has fantastic food that is locally sourced whenever possible and seasonally fresh. It is located between Saugeties and Woodstock, so is off the main path for most tourists visiting either town, but it is definitely worth finding. There are a generous number of tables, and never feels crowded even when full. The staff is friendly and you never feel rushed through any portion of the meal, but the service doesn’t lag either. And I like that the menu is online since it does change slightly with the seasons. Even though it feel high class enough to be a special occasions place, it also has a casual, neighborhood feel that makes it perfect for anytime. The one drawback is that as it gets full, it gets a bit loud, not conversation-stopping loud, but it would not be ideal for someone looking for a quiet, intimate setting.
Nice place with very good food and excellent, attentive and friendly service. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for and the quality is high.
I can't recommend the Red Onion enough. Ive eaten here many times and never had a bad experience. The food is always amazing. Whether you are going on a date, business meal or meal with friends and family this is the perfect mix of fine dining without being too fine and laid back without being too laid back. The service is always impeccable and Sarah, our hostess, was everything you could want. Attentive, knowledgable and very friendly. A great host/hostess always makes your meal experience even better. The menu often changes but I would definitely recommend the duck, the house made Pierogi, the oven backed cod (literally melts in your mouth) and even the burger is pretty special. I don't think anyone I've ever taken there has not loved the food. Even the bread is something I look forward too. Ray is also fantastic behind the bar. Go - you won't be disappointed. But be sure to book if looking for a table as it can get very busy.
We both loved our meal. We shared 2 entrees: rack of lamb and seafood risotto. The lamb was cooked to perfection and just as we ordered, and the risotto was delightfully seasoned...both dishes were delicious. I had a cream of broccoli soup that was also hot (nice on a cold night) and delicious. We were too stuffed for desert because both entrees were quite large but I gave in and had the affogato, espresso and anisette poured over vanilla ice cream. Our waitess was attentive, friendly and nice. The only downside was that it was extremely noisy (but it was a Sat night) and one nearby table in particular had 3 woman with one woman who so loud I thought she had a megaphone...so I had to remove my hearing aids!
A wonderful dining experience from start to finish.
We drive up from Manhattan every few months just to eat at the Red Onion.
Doesn't that say it all????
Excellent meal. We shared the mussels with wine and garlic. I had the Sea bass and he had the seafood risota. Delicious. Service was great.
