The new building is great! Brought back lots of great memories.
Better-than-typical British fare in a charming environment, chock-full of literary and historical memorabilia. Unique, authentic...
I needed a place to meet an old friend after many years-- that implied something good to drink, good food, and a reasonably quiet atmosphere. The Red Lion was perfect, because it was also an old friend -- I hadn't been there either for many years, and certainly not since the old version (with all its fabled ghosts) was torn down and replaced a few years ago. So I was a little stoked to see if it retained some the old charm that I fondly remembered from the 90s. It definitely did, but it also offered better food choices for the light meal we both wanted, and the same kind of pubby decor that I remembered. They had some good hard ciders choices to, which I always hope for these days. Finally, I very much appreciated that the Lion was very quiet and calm on the Monday night when we met. I imagine it gets much busier later in the week, but it was perfect for our purposes that night. As cliché as it sounds, I'll definitely be back.
We enjoyed a wonderful Saturday lunch with our adult son. The food was excellent--2 of us enjoyed the ruben sandwich--mine gluten free, served in lettuce leaves. The sauce was unlike anything I've ever had and was very tasty. My husband enjoyed a great pub burger. We all enjoyed sharing the brussel sprouts.
My daughter and I were going to a show at Lincoln Hall and wanted to go to a nearby restaurant. This certainly fit the bill as it's literally next store to Lincoln Hall. The ambience was awesome and my husband would have loved it. The waiter we had was great and the food was good. The price was definitely right. I would go back again and if the weather is nice and you can sit up in front it's like sitting outside as the windows are open.
Very cute inside, and decent pub food. We had the corned beef sandwich, shepherds pie, and a burger. Good selection of beers as well.
The Red Lion has the true look and feel of a pub in England. Very inviting and warm interior, fascinating memorabilia and artwork, and an excellent drink menu. The food was surprisingly interesting.. strongly recommended.
Loved it. Beautiful place, cozy library like. And the owner, Colin, was friendly and knowledgeable, interesting. Shared stories of the building, his family and long time ownership. Can't wait to return....
The old 'Lion was always one of my favorite places, even if it was a bit of a delightfully divey pub with great food back then. The new version is even better, immaculate but accessibly Bri'ish, with a fantastic classically English menu and a sterling selection of beer and spirits.
Best Fish and chips in town!! Also check out the Scottish Egg.
This place was so well decorated and felt like a true English pub. The food was delicious!
Eclectic British menu, fun library setting, chill mix of people. Friendly accommodating staff. Yummy food, nice drinks.
Great, authentic British pub with fantastic Scotch Eggs, Bangers & Mash, etc., along with super-friendly, well-informed staff and fantastic cocktails! All in all, one of the better places in Chicago to tip one back.
The rebirth of "The Red Lion" was well worth the wait. Like a Phoenix
rising from the ashes, Collin Cordwell has not only rebuilt but re-established
the Red Lion as the premier English Pub in Chicago. Great food, great English beer.
Good friendly service at reasonable prices. Cheers.
Great place and amazing food!!
Always a nice respite from the hurly burly of many other bar/restaurants.
This place is very cool looking inside and out. The service was great and the food was perfect. It was a slower night so we got our food quickly and didn't notice any more noise then you would have at a normal dinning experience. My friend and I both got the pub burger and it may be my new favorite burger. The pub cheese on top was amazing and it was cooked exactly how I ordered it(medium rare, more toward the rare side). Can't wait to go back and experience this place again.
Not a bad approximation of a London pub but not worth the hype, at least for a Friday dinner. The menu was as expected but we weren't thrilled with our choices (she had the burger, which was OK; my scotch egg was served in a non-traditional way (cold) but wasn't bad for all that; my bangers and mash was dreadful). Bar selection was pretty typical. They seem to have a nice snug and good-looking seating upstairs; wish we'd seen them. It wasn't really worth making a reservation because they plunked us where they could fit us anyway. Too many tables for the space they have to work with, but they were full on a Friday night so I guess they can't be faulted. I might (MIGHT) give them another try for a Sunday brunch but wouldn't go out of my way to recommend.
What a gem of a pub. Food was great, staff was patient and fun, the interior is simply stunning.
The atmosphere at the Red Lion Pub is quaint and cozy - perfect for a snowy winter evening. Unfortunately, the food and service is really lacking. Other reviews site service as a weak point - that is definitely true. It seems to be an issue of the kitchen moving orders quickly enough and perhaps not enough servers. We waited quite a while for a drink order to be taken, but our food took nearly 45 minutes. While we never complained, the manager made our entrees complimentary and was apologetic. As a result we'll give the restaura
Our experience was wonderful. The service was outstanding. Our server Chris was incredibly knowlegable and gave us great recommendations on both food and drink. We live in the suburbs but stopped before a show at the Apollo. I wish we lived closer so we could come back sooner!
Reservations were not needed for the early time we were there, but the food was great, service was very friendly. This pub has been around for years, but was the first time these suburbanites were there. Will definitely return!
Met a friend here before an evening at the Park West Theater. The food was good and the service was great. We were there around 5:30 on a Saturday so things were still somewhat quiet. This was good for conversation. Nice atmosphere
Slowest food service in my lifetime. And worst of all we were one of 2-3 tables in the entire bar. Don't cone unless you plan to drink only.
Had an afternoon reservation for 10 people before a Cubs game. We arrived early and the table was ready. Not very crowded. Waited until everyone arrived before we ordered food. After an hour (yes, an hour!) the food was not ready. They couldn't really tell us when it would be ready, but certainly not in the next 15 min (1 hr and 15 min after we ordered!). We were going to be late for the game, so we told them to cancel the food order. No warning that the kitchen was having a problem. Never really got an explanation. The owner comp'd our drinks, which was nice of him. Too bad...good menu and nice atmosphere. Just no food???
A very warm, cozy place to dine, especially on a chilly night! Good food, very pleasant service.
Food had to be sent back because overcooked. Food quality and portion could have been better. I went to a performance at Victory Gardens and was looking forward to enjoying good pub food. I was disappointed.
My wife and I walked over to the Red Lion after a matinee at the Victory Gardens Theater. Dinner was excellent--fish and chips. And the recommended nitro--Boddington's--was superb. The decor was cozy--fireplace, library books, Beatles posters. This is the place to go before or after a show.
My board meetings have been noisy for a while, and now we've found a nice, quiet spot with great beer and (according to my compatriot) good food. We'll definitely be back.
We made a reservation to have dinner here. When we arrived, the restaurant was closed, leaving us to wander until we found someplace else to have dinner on our last night of vacation in Chicago.
Great place. Was looking for a casual but still nice place for dinner. Loved the very british menu and nice decor. We liked all of our dishes and will go back for sure.
Such a great atmosphere, lovely staff
Came with a group of 7 and the service we got from Chris was outstanding! Great drink and food selection and the English atmosphere is just right!
We arrived for an early dinner. Food was great--especially Shepard's Pie. I think they have resumed using the original recipe from the pre-renovated Red Lion which I loved.
Enjoyed being there. Great for a writers' group meeting. Terrific service!
Good pub food. Friendly nice service. Great different wines and beers on special .
Each person in our party of four ordered different menu items, and each was pleased. My choices: fish & chips, Fuller's ESB, and chocolate stout ice cream - all outstanding
Great pub experience ! Beautiful interior! Felt like I was back in London!
Fish and chips is their specialty: fish was great, light, flaky batter, fries were cold and hard. Dead quiet at lunch which was good as I met a friend and we wanted to chat.
Went there after going to the theatre across the street. It was April, and still pretty chilly that day and they had all the front windows open. Of course we get seated right near the windows, it was freezing in there. We literally ate with our coats on! We had to ask them to close the windows which took forever for them to do. Besides that, the good was mediocre at best.
