The Red Horse Ratings and Reviews
I will simply say that I'm sorry I waited so long to return to the Red Horse. From the time we walked in the front door to the time we left, we felt welcomed and appreciated. The service was outstanding and the food was equally as good. Everything was perfectly cooked from the tuna to the filets. We will certainly not wait as long to return. Thank you for a great evening.
Without question, this was the most expensive worst meal I have ever had. The calamari was undercooked and had no flavor. It came with an extremely watery substance in a cup that I assume was supposed to be some form of ranch dressing. They had serious guts uncharging the salads that came with the meals. They weren't edible even if they were free - especially the awful, awful "blue cheese" dressing that came with them. I have never in my life eaten blue cheese that didn't taste like blue cheese. My son's shrimp entree was atrocious. The shrimp, like the calamari, were undercooked and soggy. My prime rib came out on a plate by itself, swimming in a puddle of some sort of broth, and cold. The rib eyes other people in my party ordered were cooked well, but they had no flavor. Even the bread was flavorless. Truthfully, the only decent (not good) part of the entire meal were the french fries, and I'm guessing that's only because they were frozen from a bag and someone else was responsible for their flavor. The decor was dated and not appealing. I felt like I was in a run-down 1980s steakhouse with no redeemable nostalgia attached to it. Overall, a terrible meal that made me wish we had opted to get a sub to go at the WaWa across the street.
On the afternoon of November, 2 2017 my wife and I visited the Red Horse there was only one waitress working who apologized for being understaffed. We choose a window seat and regretted that choice because we spent the rest of our evening in the company of numerous flies and gnats. My wife and I both ordered steaks and baked potatoes. Both of our steaks were reasonably hot and cooked to order, but my potato was lukewarm and my steamed vegetables were actually cold. Including the tip we paid over $100.00 and drove an hour and a half each direction. I would have to say that after we considered everything we both agreed that the Red Horse did not live up to it's reputation. We will not be returning.
My folks and I were at the very well-known and historically excellent, Red Horse just this past week. We were there again this year, as we were last year at this time, to celebrate my birthday. My folks live in Rockville and were thrilled to go back to The Red Horse having had such a great experience the year prior. (It is hard to believe an entire year has flown by already.) Our server, Stephanie was excellent and extremely attentive to our needs and the evening with Mom and Dad was delightful. I have a funny feeling that we will be back there again next year :) Needless to say, we loved it! Thanks Red Horse for the carte blanche service!
The restaurant has a terrible odor when you walk in it smells like a funeral home they haven't updated anything in 40+ years selection of beer was ridiculous said we needed reservations but there wasn't a soul in there so we left and I would not recommend this to anyone the place needs to be shut down
I was traveling back home and choose this restaurant because it was close to route 70. I had know idea that it would be the greatest meal I have had in years. The bus boy was amazing. in fact he was better than the waiter. I have already recommend this place to several friends. on the con side, I am a lighting designer and the lighting need to be address.
It was my first time here (my companion's second) and I will definitely return. The interior is "rustic" and somewhat dated. Tables are well aligned for visibility. Each of us selected the prime rib as our entrees. Mine was supposed to be medium rare, but arrived medium well - no, I didn't send it back in case you are wondering. It tasted great. My companion had an end cut and remarked that her's wasn't seasoned enough. Vegetables du jour were crisp and the bread supply was endless. I've seen mixed reviews about The Red Horse so was a bit reluctant to try it... I'm glad I did.
We spent the weekend in Frederick, trying a few places, we read really good things about this place so we made a reservation, unfortunately the food was just "ok" there was nothing great/special or memorable about anything. We each had steak, 1 NY Strip and 1 Prime Rib, the portions were great, but there was very little flavor and one was slightly overcooked. I had lobster tail added, that was decent. Overall, just "ok", nothing to write home about, would not rush back.
Courteous reception and wait staff. Concern for your comfort displayed by all. Food selection was good. It was prepared properly and served promptly. Desert selection was good and each of our party enjoyed something different.
This was a good experience and we plan to return soon.
The food and service at throw restaurant was outstanding. The steaks, ceaser salad, escargot, cold crab cocktail were delicious. The French onion soup needs more flavor however. The restaurant is rustic and smelled like heavy smoke as soon as you walk in and sit down until you get us d to it. The molten lava cake was delicious and the service was outstanding!
We went there for Valentine's Day. My fiance and I haven't gone out in a long time for various reasons, so we were looking forward to this. Had a reservation for 7:30. Got there a little early so we went to the bar and had great drinks! That was the only highlight of our night.
Got seated finally at 7:45......ordered right away because we were hungry. Didn't actually get the food till almost an HOUR later. Absolutely ridiculous. We had lost our appetite by the time the food actually got there.
Needless to say we didn't stay for desert.
Great food and service on a busy Valentine's Day dinner. Steaks were exceptional. The only thing that keeps me from rating the food a "5" was that my wife wasn't crazy about her Caesar salad. Mardi Gras oysters were fabulous. Cheesecake and parfait for dessert were very good.
There were 6 of us..4 Adults and 2 kids. We had Steak and Lobster, Fish and the kids had grilled chicken breast. It was all very good. No complaints. Service was great and they did everything to accommodate us with the kids. Valentine's Day Dinner and we had a Lovely time. Would go back!!
This was the first time visiting The Red Horse. We enjoyed the experience thoroughly. The staff was very friendly. Our dining room was quiet, with a fire in the fireplace. We had salad, French Onion Soup, Prime Rib, Filet Mignon, and Turtle Cheesecake. All were delicious.
I would highly recommend The Red Horse to anyone looking for a great meal in a lovely atmosphere with really good service.
The night an old friend of mine and i went it was a very quiet night at The Red Horse. But we had to ask for our server as no one came out immediately. You'd think on a quiet night this wouldn't be an issue. The ambiance was excellent and I recommend this place for a date night. Except one patron I know would not agree. The following all came about very suddenly. But I noticed and heard this patron near the kitchen (almost in the kitchen) yelling at someone (I assumed the cook). After he was finished yelling I overheard him say, "how dare they yell back at me"! (what do you expect! ha! unless you adhere to the old adage "the customer is always right". ) But then this gentleman went back to his table and retrieved his wife and their coats and they left. Soon after I asked our waiter if someone didn't like their steak causing them to yell at the cook? But it turned out this guy was upset because Red Horse didn't have a rose at his table as he requested for some special occasion. Ok, I would be upset but I don't think I would go into the kitchen and start yelling over a rose! But if he was told when he made the reservation they definitely would have a rose and then showed up and no rose, I'd be po'd as well. But not to the point this guy was! He must have had a bad day!! Oh, I forgot to add that our waiter got our steaks mixed up-I ordered medium and my friend ordered medium well-which we stupidly didn't discover until we each had taken a few bites-but we switched anyway! Ha! And the waiter was most apologetic even though it was discovered the chef selects the plates for each customer-which means it wasn't the waiters fault...but overall it was a pleasant evening with good food.
My feelings about our experience at Red Horse are... complicated. We dined here for New Years Eve. The band downstairs was playing so loudly that the bass was vibrating the floor. We were told that happens every weekend, not just on NYE. The food was amazing, but a little pricey. All the staff were nice - but WAY too... attentive. It's odd to complain about the service being "too good," but we had someone stopping at our table literally every few minutes. That's not an exaggeration, and I'm using the word literally properly. We didn't dare set our forks down for a second, or someone would try to clear our plate. Actually, we didn't even have to put the fork down - if the plate was less than half full, someone would try to clear it. We were eating! Every other bite, someone came to ask how we were doing. I mean, I guess that's nice - but we came out to talk to each other, not the staff. It was impossible to hold a conversation because we were constantly interrupted and clinging to our food for dear life so someone didn't try to take it away. Perhaps they were overstaffed for NYE and were told they couldn't leave the customers alone for more than five seconds or they would lose their jobs. That's certainly what it felt like. Just for context, I was a server for over a decade.
