The Rail Stop Ratings and Reviews
It was my birthday and Diane was a gem of a waitress. She made sure, throughout our meal, we were happy with our experience. Food was incredible, the ambiance for the occasion lovely. The only thing I would have liked to have changed was the temperature in the room. It was chilly! Perhaps a floor heater would do the trick. All in all we had a wonderful evening.
My husband and I ordered off the dinner specials menu. My seafood dinner was very good. My husband’s seafood pasta was just okay. Both meals were pricey ($36 each) and that combined with a couple glasses of wine made the final bill way overpriced for a very casual place. Most entrees were $25+.
Four friends out to celebrate the Birthday Girl. Cocktails, dinner and dessert. Everyone enjoyed their selections. Most delicious veal I've ever had...and my husband and I have dined in a lot of restaurants on 3 continents and 2 islands! Really great food at The Rail Stop.
This was our first time to the Rail Stop but we will definitely return. The food was outstanding as was the service. We ordered the crab cake appetizer and it was the best crab cake I have ever eaten - lots of crab and excellent seasoning. Three of us had the grilled Angus strip which was excellent and was offered in two sizes which was a welcome option. One person ordered the pork chop which was good but not seasoned as well as the strip steak. The ambience is upscale casual in the dining room while the bar side appeared more casual for dinner or drinks at the bar.
Although the food and service was very good, I thought the value was lacking. I got sauteed spinach (salad), which had bacon and shrimp. It tasted good, but a small plate of sauteed spinach with 4 shrimp in my book is overpriced at $14! It was good ... but not a good value. We enjoyed our time there, and the folks were very kind and accommodating.
We have been here several times. The food is good. I am a picky eater but I still found a good choice despite the fancier choices which everyone else likes so much. The lady who seated us and waited on us (the owner?) is delightful. She's very friendly and helpful, answering my questions so I could make an appropriate choice. I don't drink so I can't help with that. The place is cute and not loud so we could easily talk. We'll definitely return.
We decided to try the Rail Stop now that we live closer to The Plains. You can tell it's a "neighborhood gem;" everyone seemed to know everyone else. The rockfish special was delicious, with a butter caper sauce that could have used just another squeeze of lemon. The asparagus were nicely done. The wine list is small but interesting, with such finds as a pinto gris and pinot blanc. You need reservations on the weekend. The noise level increased as the tables filled. All in all, an enjoyable if somewhat noisy experience.
A favorite of ours in VA horse country.. creative cuisine especially with meat and duck...attentive service. Nice wine list..conducive to quiet conversation - at least on weeknights. Pasta special not as impressive as duck specials in past bu husband loved the pork.
We had lunch reservations on a Sunday afternoon.. Several of our party were running late. I call to let them know this. We got our lunches around 2:30 and ate while we talked. The place had lots of empty tables. Their site says open until 8 pm on Sundays. Imagine our surprise when at 3:40 they asked us to leave saying they needed to close so they could reopen at 5:00. When I asked about this I was told rudely that we had been there a long time past the time of our reservations and even though it was only 40 minutes after their 3 pm closing time we still needed to leave. Apparently they think than 40 minutes to eat even on a non busy day is appropriate.
We are local and somewhat regulars but we will not be back.
As an aside the food was good but not worth the rudeness or time restrains.
My wife and I made a reservation to have brunch at The Rail Stop in The Plains last Sunday. Despite that we arrived on time and had a reservation, the greeter wanted to seat us close to the bar, at a table with no table cloth, when the restaurant was less than half full and the dining room with nice tables was almost empty. When we asked to seat in the dining room, she agreed. Why the host has decided to seat us in the less attractive part of the restaurant when it was almost empty?
Once we were seated our waiter was very nice and helpful answering our questions on the menu.
The brunch menu is very limited. You shouldn't go expecting something special.
I ordered Eggs Benedict. The the eggs were put on very thin muffin, not the best you can find at any grocery store. The coffee was ok. The prices are reasonable.
The noise is above the comfort level to have a quiet conversation.
We cannot say it was an awful experience, but we will think twice before coming back to The Train Stop. The best: The waiter service, efficient and friendly.
My only negative thing was we were first seated near the kitchen. It was very noisy. We asked to be reseated to a different room and they accommodated us. We could still hear kitchen noise, but not as bad. Overall experience was great. Staff was great and food was delicious.
