Appetizers: calamari salad and warm spinach salad. Entrees:: crab cakes and veal saltimbocca. All were excellent. The waiter recommended the wine, which was a good pairing (I forget which one). Great place for a date. We will be back.

For my wife's birthday, she decided we should try The Rail Stop. We have eaten there on several occasions and very much like the ambiance and the chefs specials. The service is always outstanding.

We decided to try the Rail Stop now that we live closer to The Plains. You can tell it's a "neighborhood gem;" everyone seemed to know everyone else. The rockfish special was delicious, with a butter caper sauce that could have used just another squeeze of lemon. The asparagus were nicely done. The wine list is small but interesting, with such finds as a pinto gris and pinot blanc. You need reservations on the weekend. The noise level increased as the tables filled. All in all, an enjoyable if somewhat noisy experience.

A favorite of ours in VA horse country.. creative cuisine especially with meat and duck...attentive service. Nice wine list..conducive to quiet conversation - at least on weeknights. Pasta special not as impressive as duck specials in past bu husband loved the pork.

We had lunch reservations on a Sunday afternoon.. Several of our party were running late. I call to let them know this. We got our lunches around 2:30 and ate while we talked. The place had lots of empty tables. Their site says open until 8 pm on Sundays. Imagine our surprise when at 3:40 they asked us to leave saying they needed to close so they could reopen at 5:00. When I asked about this I was told rudely that we had been there a long time past the time of our reservations and even though it was only 40 minutes after their 3 pm closing time we still needed to leave. Apparently they think than 40 minutes to eat even on a non busy day is appropriate.
We are local and somewhat regulars but we will not be back.
As an aside the food was good but not worth the rudeness or time restrains.

My wife and I made a reservation to have brunch at The Rail Stop in The Plains last Sunday. Despite that we arrived on time and had a reservation, the greeter wanted to seat us close to the bar, at a table with no table cloth, when the restaurant was less than half full and the dining room with nice tables was almost empty. When we asked to seat in the dining room, she agreed. Why the host has decided to seat us in the less attractive part of the restaurant when it was almost empty?

Once we were seated our waiter was very nice and helpful answering our questions on the menu.

The brunch menu is very limited. You shouldn't go expecting something special.

I ordered Eggs Benedict. The the eggs were put on very thin muffin, not the best you can find at any grocery store. The coffee was ok. The prices are reasonable.

The noise is above the comfort level to have a quiet conversation.

We cannot say it was an awful experience, but we will think twice before coming back to The Train Stop. The best: The waiter service, efficient and friendly.

Small, cozy, casual, relaxing. Good food and drink. Salads need to be a bit larger.

My only negative thing was we were first seated near the kitchen. It was very noisy. We asked to be reseated to a different room and they accommodated us. We could still hear kitchen noise, but not as bad. Overall experience was great. Staff was great and food was delicious.

I would have given top marks for ambiance, but we had to sit in the front room near the front door and check-in desk since the main dining room was reserved. I wish someone had told me ahead of time that there would be no seating in the main dining room. This restaurant needs a party room. I would say this is their biggest negative putting party goers before their regular guests. When looking for a nice restaurant for evening dining, being put in a section of the restaurant that looks more like a lunch setting is not cool! That aside, the food was wonderful!! Very delicious!! They are expensive, but this is an upscale restaurant.

A nice quiet lunch (weekday), unhurried and a relaxed visit with friends. The meal was very good and healthy. I would certainly recommend this restaurant. It might be helpful if they kept some gluten-free buns in the freezer so that they could be offered as a choice for those individuals who are unable to eat wheat.

Our evening was delightful up to almost the last minute. We were so enjoying conversation with our friends, we did not notice we were the only patrons left, that is until one of our group noticed the lights were being switched on/off through the kitchen doorway, apparently our signal to leave. It was a bit embarrassing to have our guests comment upon it, especially since we had so highly recommended The Rail Stop.

Nice stop in historic town. Food is good, not great but good. I had a Sunday brunch burger without bun with a nicely dressed salad that unfortunately had frisée and delicate green leaf lettuce well past its prime. Hubby had a chorizo hash with poached eggs and melted cheese...good flavor but the eggs were undercooked with runny whites making it a little unpalatable. No toast or bread offered or served. We later heard there was a doughnut basket available that contained bread but this was not mentioned by our server. No brunch drinks mentioned, there was a specials board but it's not visible from the dining room and not mentioned by our server.

We just love this place. They always have 2 dinner specials - and a great menu to choose from. Not to big, just the perfect amount to choose from. Outside sitting if you want and really just a great place to share a meal with someone you love! And your server always knows when you need more time - they don't rush you!

Very small restaurant, but a fairly large menu. Great hamburgers and salads. Service was excellent, and they are willing to make changes to accommodate diner needs. Strongly recommend making a reservation for dinner. The Plains itself, where this restaurant is located, is very small, but there is a beautiful Church a couple of blocks away, and some wonderful old architecture that makes a fifteen minute walk a pleasure.

We've been going to the Rail Stop for over a year to meet up with friends and family mid-way from Harpers Ferry and Fredericksburg. While the food is always good and the service excellent, the menu needs to change, at least with the seasons. Such is not the case. It's always the same items, even if carefully prepared. Too bad.

You must try the cold cucumber soup to begin your meal! Evening special was rockfish that was cooked to perfection.Served with jasmine rice and asparagus. Key lime tart made at restaurant was outstanding. Server was extremely attentive - in a good way. This restaurant is such a nice change from chains and expensive want to be places.

Great place. In every way. One drawback, it seems clear that the chef has serious chefing skills, but based on the taste, it's also clear somebody needs to let him/her off the leash. The cooking was excellent. The flavor was weak.

We loved every minute of the night. The food was great - and we had picky eaters! The servers seemed busy but certainly spent enough time with us making us feel special. They even brought out a birthday dessert for the birthday girl. We have been here before - but it was new to 3 of our companions - and I know we will ALL be back. Thanks for a grand night.

We were a table of 4. My food (scallops and shrimp) was great. Two of the others said the steak was OK and one of them complained of too much fat (on the steak). I had a Margherita on the rocks as did my friend. Fabulous!
It's noisy in there but there isn't much they can do about it.
Waitress was informative and friendly but not very attentive to things like water refills.
I would recommend it but with caveat. The prices run high end but the experience doesn't.
Still 3.5 stars
