The Rail Stop
I was underwhelmed with this restaurant and I will not be recommending it or returning for another visit. I think $30.00 for “hand-made” pasta, topped with what tasted like frozen lobster and flavorless Marinara was a little much. The restaurant was small and lacked ambiance not to mention the bathroom could use an update and the chairs were quite uncomfortable. I do not understand why this restaurant is rated so well. The Service was good and the wait staff was friendly. The food was editable but I was expecting more pizzazz and flavor for this price point. Be aware that many of the items featured on the online menu may not actually available in the restaurant. The parking was on the street only with no available handicap parking available in front of the restaurant. There was a sign which said there was some parking around back but we could not find it and there were no signs leading us to it.
After staying away too long and not on purpose, we experienced a kitchen operating at its highest level of excellence. From the soft shell crabs in season, delicately prepared, to the homemade ravioli, to the always great crab cakes, The Rail Stop is the destination for the hungry, the tired and the stressed. Please try the organic Pinot Gris from the fabulous Willamette Valley of Oregon. It will blow you away in its subtly. If you are lucky enough to have Diane Hilton as your server, count your blessings. She is gracious, professional and gorgeous. Do not miss The Rail Stop.
Great time for a Mother’s Day celebration - great food and wonderful service! The place was packed with happy customers for the event.
We come here very often and every time we have such a good experience. I love the atmosphere, the food, and the service is always delightful. Always happy to come back here.
Outstanding food and service! My friend and I had a delightful time!!
The food and service were outstanding which is been our experience as we have eaten at the rail stop many times.
Found this gem while searching for a new place to go to dinner with SWMBO. Great experience! Arrived early, got seated immediately, ordered the pan seared sea scallops and was very pleased that I did. Wife had the veal and it too was excellent. Staff was friendly and efficient - brought the meal quickly (sooner than expected) and let us eat in peace. Would highly recommend them and plan on going back!!
Has the potential to be excellent. Service was spotty; it appeared a new person was being trained and the other person had too much going on, but when service was provided it was attentive. Food with a little more attention would also be very good. The soba salad was very good, but it had been cooked with too much oil (I wanted to sop up the oil with a paper napkin). The cheese on the cheeseburger looked it it had come out of a plastic sleeve and was not melted. Less oil and melted cheese would have made difference in both meals. Desserts were good, but pricey. Recommend that prices be posted. If I was local or in the area I'd give it another try, but it's not worth the hour drive for me - sadly.
The Rail stop has the smallish menu so that everything they serve is well prepared. One of us had the chicken and mashed potatoes and substituted asparagus, all very well cooked, I had a perfectly cooked steak, and the Asian duck rolls with hoisin are terrific.
Never disappoints!! When of our absolute favorite spots!
Very good food. Pricey, but delicious. I recommend you get there earlier to enjoy the town.
Nice people, attentive service, very expensive, pasta special was bland, salmon good but piece very small, we've had many better meals for similar prices elsewhere. Don't plan to return.
Excellent luncheon. 2 specials particularly good.
Love the Rail Stop! The food is always good and the people are friendly! One of my favorite places!
We love the Rail Stop. Jenny and Diana are fantastic. The food is outstanding. Only recommendation is that they change the menu once or twice a year. It never changes.
Promptly greeted upon arrival. Just a great evening - delicious food and great service!
We always enjoy this place
A wonderful experience, as always, great service and delicious food.
I have recommended the Rail Stop to several of my friends and will continue to do so! I had salmon over a rice medley last Sunday and it was delicious!! The chicken burrito wasn't bad either!! Try it, you will like it!!
Incredible staple of The Plains. We went here for the first time in 10 years and the food and service was as excellent as I remember.
Lovely, small restaurant - food prepared to specifications - staff friendly - quaint setting
Wonderful food and incredibly professional and friendly service. Just a wonderful restaurant.
They were warm, welcoming and patient with our 3 year old. Delicious food best crab cake in Virginia!!! We enjoyed a variety of food and all were outstanding.
Looking forward to our next visit, sans toddler.
The restaurant as always was terrific. The crab cakes are as good as any I have ever had. Total crab meat. Absolutely delicious. Ambience is outstanding. Went on a Saturday night. Full house so the noise level was high. Recommend going during the week. Much less noise. Do not miss this restaurant. It is excellent for any occasion.
Everything was nice food was great. Always a good experience at The Rail Stop.
Excellent service is just the start of a wonderful dining experience. The food is creative and flavorful. The hot mushroom and spinach salad was especially good. And our host was attentive, but not intrusive. We'll be back.
Enjoyed the experience, will go again. The food was very tasty and wonderful portions. The draft beer was very cold's it should be.The staff was very helpful.
Very nice dinner! Had been meaning to try for a long time. Excellent veal medallions and crab cakes. The Asian appetizer rolls were fabulous. Cocktail wasn't great, but a very good wine list. Will be back!
Everything was great. Had the potato chive soup as appetizer. Pepperoni pizza for lunch. Thin and crispy. Delicious.
Menu is interesting, food very good and service excellent.
Rail Stop is one of my favorite restaurants and my friend & I love going there. It's so nice to be welcomed and taken care of especially by Diane. Ambiance is super, food is delicious and it's a great place to hold a conversation without having to shout across the table, like some other restaurants are these days.
our food was delicious. We’ve been going her over the five years and we are never disappointed.
We arrived 1/2 hr early for our reservation and were seated in the front window by the door. While we appreciated being seated as soon as we got there, that’s a cold location and we like to sit in Diane’s section. So, we left for a half hour and returned at our reservation time. The table we wanted was ready, Diane served us with her usual friendly charm and the food was delicious, as usual. It was a terrific evening and in the future we’ll arrive at our reservation time for this very popular little restaurant!
We had a wonderful time. It was great seeing Diane again.
Always a wonderful experience at the Rail Stop. Great menu with wonderful specials. Everything is fresh and temperature appropriate. Friendly and efficient service from everyone.
Our favorite restaurant for years. The food is always amazing and so consistent. Had duck rolls, crab cake, spinach salad and veal medallions. All delicious. Always great service from Diane, Jenny and Bruce and the rest of the staff.
Hands down best restaurant in the area. Always delicious, always an awesome experience.
Really a great meal! We enjoyed the food and service.
As always a great experience - this is our go to date night restaurant.
Our server - Diane was exceptional.
Food from appitizer to salad to entrees to dessert - fantastic.
FYI crab cakes are phenominal!
I really enjoyed my time at the Rail Stop. The place is very cute in a nice quiet town. We had a couple of great dishes. My girlfriend got some delicious ravioli, and my crab cakes were some of the best I have ever had. The only reason why I gave 4 stars and not 5 is that I felt it was a little pricey for the portions and they could have used another server to help with how busy the place was. I have already recommended it to some friends, and we hope to go back.
