The food and service was great. I took a date her for our anniversary and I was expecting a great experience however, the food and beverages took way too long to arrive my date ordered a alcoholic drink and myself a coffee, her drink arrived and I had to ask for my coffee 2 times before it arrived. The appetizers took at least 25 minutes to arrive we order mussels and a salad. To add more insult to injury our main course was so late that the server had to bring us another dish to make sure we would not complain more. It took over 1 hour and 15 minutes for our main course to arrive. I could understand if they were busy but the restaurant was not even 25 percent full.
Small but cozy.
Service is fantastic. The appetizers were ok. BUT All the sauces on the main entrees/dishes that we ordered was tooooo sweet. We ordered 3 different dishes and they're all sweet (too much !) overlooked shrimp The dessert special is banana pudding. Not!! It's sliced bananas sprinkled with brown sugar on the side with vanilla pudding in the middle. Not good. Thumbs down on food quality. Thumbs up on service provided.
The food was fantastic. Service was great. We were seated right away and attended to promptly by all staff especially our server Kane who was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. We will definetly be coming back!
I must say the food and service are fantastic at Rail House. Just amazing!!
My dining experience here was not bad, but I was also not very impressed. Average and mediocre would probably be the two best words I can think of. The service was good - our waitress was very friendly. Waited a very long time for a bottle of wine but besides that the service was on point. The Apple Salad was delicious. I loved the acid level as well as the perfect amount of cheese and nuts. It was a very well balanced dish. The Mussels Verde had a serious lack of harmony. The mussels were good and so was the sauce, but together they really just didn't make sense. The Duck entree was decent. It was cooked perfectly but lacking flavor and excitement. I enjoyed it but it was nothing special. The Scallops were very disappointing. They were bland and overcooked. It was also another confusing dish - lack of harmony. Overall a decent experience. I'm glad I came in and tried it out - it was worth it for a one time deal - but it's unlikely that I would return.
A bit overly attentive service. Food is good and varied selection.
Rail House's special prix fixe dinner was unique, with tastes pairing that surprised and delighted. The staff was, as always, welcoming and knowledgeable, and the entire experience made the day truly memorable!
Had pre fixe 4 course dinner. Four of us each had good dinner with entrees covering: Wild Boar, Scallops wrapped in bacon, 2 way Duck, and Short Ribs..
Everyone happy and enthusiasic.
Kudos again to Bobbi, Kane and of course Chef.
Parking: on street and parking garage on the next street.
We went on the Friday - Valentine's Day weekend. Felt like stepping into a cozy home dinning room. It was a slow night - only 2-3 other couples in the restaurant. Their beer list is okay - my bf had river horse ipa. I had the Italian lemon drop martini and was delicious! We started with the pan seared short rib which came with 3. I had the pan seared salmon - the coconut sauce was not overtaking but did not find any pomegranate. My bf had the stuffed French chicken- very moist and he raved about the horseradish mashed potatoes. (Total meal was about $70 + tip)
Overall I had no complaints on anything. Our server was nice and attentive and food was delicious. I am definitely coming back and recommending it to family and friends!
The Rail House is a very friendly place that makes you feel special every time. The menu has great selections (which they will adapt to personal taste). We have gone there to re-connect with old friends and to celebrate family birthdays. We'll return for future celebrations as well.
Our party of six enjoyed our pre-show dinner early on Saturday evening. The menu is varied and the food suited everyone at the table. The service was attentive without being intrusive. I would recommend Rail House to those attending shows at the nearby Union County Performing Arts Center. The restaurant gives a discount for ticket holders.
Once again- SUPERB!!!! The Chippino Seafood Special was loaded with huge shrimps...scallops..clams...mussels...and a snapper filet..The corn soup with poached lobster and bacon garnish was just divine...Red Velvet cake is back....Yay...Can't wait to return!!!
enjoyed our 45th anniversary dinner...
dinners were excellent as was service. i had San Francisco Cioppino (daily special) and it was delicious. (could not eat it all.)
we have been many times and it is just perfect always!
thanks to Bobby and our waiter - Kane for a nice night!
Fabulous apple salad and tender lamb lollipops were my favorites. The quiet and intimate dining room was perfect for two couples celebrating the holiday together.
Great meal and a festive glass of champagne to toast the new year.
I have only patronized this restaurant once but I definitely plan on returning. The setting was nice and quaint and the service was great. I am not a drinker so I am not sure if I can give you any direction about their wine selection but I suspect that it is extensive. I nice little gem that I will be going back to soon
I had higher hopes for this restaurant which I pass nightly from the train station to my parking lot. I had been to an previous restaurant in this location and it was a sophisticated and pleasing (even if pricey) meal. All that seems to be left is the pricey. The location is a very nice restored older building with a lot of charm. We ordered three appetizers (salad, flatbread and crab cake) and two entrees (scallop special and prawns). While the salad was good, the other items ranged from just passable to not very appetizing. The wait staff and bartender were very nice but the food did not measure up.
Came here for my gentleman friends birthday. Food was perfect, drinks were delicious. Wait staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Will be back and definitely recommend.
Whether you want an elegant, quiet dining room or a busy sports bar scene, Rail House can accommodate you. Great food, good wine, friendly and personal service are always the norm. Yet the many choices make for different experiences, depending on your mood. We go back again and again!
Our appetizers: Lobster Mac and Cheese and Mussels Verde were delicious. Our Rib-Eye/Poached Lobster Tail Special and the Short Ribs were the BEST..finished off with a shared portion of New York Cheesecake with Homemde Berry Sauce- just yummy!!! Service was GREAT!!! Cant wait to return
Their website clearly states that they have weekly specials including a Wednesday night date with a Rib eye for two, but when we got there we were told that they no longer are doing these special menus. This was the reason we came to the restaurant.
Our waiter was very nice and the food good, although it felt like there was a long wait from when we finished our salads to when we were served out entrees.
We walked in,had made reservations prior and there was no employee in sight. We walked around and found the outdoor patio dining before someone asked if we needed help. We had been thinking about walking out the but decided to stay. Glad we did. Amazing special cocktails. Classics as well as interesting variations on the classics. Same with the food. Had short rib ravioli. These were boiled as normal BUT then they were crisped up in a pan. Unique and delicious. Kane was our waiter and his attentiveness was wonderful.!
We have dined at the Railhouse many times and the food and service is always great! Love the ambiance and the outdoor patio along with the bar they own next door. The Chocolate Babka is delicious and such a rare find for a dessert. We will return again!
This restaurant is one of the best we have ever been to. We had carrot coconut soup and the swordfish. They were both fabulous. The drinks were very good too, and well priced (even their special drinks.) The service was great. We live in Brooklyn, and will make a special trip to go back there. We ate outdoors, and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Everything was great!
This was our second time at The Rail House. The first time was for my birthday in February and our table of four all enjoyed the different choices on the menu. This time we stopped in for burgers and beers. The burgers were outstanding. I had the California burger which was Brie with pear- odd sounding but yummy- I ate every bite. It came with cole slaw or fries. The cole slaw was lite and refreshing mixed in were cranberries. My husband enjoyed the fries that came with his cheddar burger with a fried egg ( I would have added some beers- but that is me). We will be back.
My husband raved about the duck entrée he had, told the chef it was the best he ever had. Caine was excellent and very personable. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.
Wonderful ambiance and warm, friendly service. An eclectic menu. The kind of place where you want to try everything and pan your next visit over coffee. Becoming one of our favorites
Ridiculous wait!!! We waited over an hour for an appetiser that was a salad. We waited 15 minutes just to get water. The server server other tables who came in after us with their dinners. When we got our dinner it seriously lacked seasoning and salt. I would not recommend this location to anyone.
We had the MOST Delicious and Romantic dinner!!! We were greeted with a smile..our Mini Beef Wellington and Mussels Verde were delightful..the Stuffed Frenched Chicken and Grilled Pork Chop were cooked to flavorful perfection and the Chocolate Bobka we shared was the icing on the cake!!! Caine- our server was attentive and informative...BEST night!!!
The food was good, and the waiter was nice. My husband had the chicken and I had the pork chop. The red velvet cake was one of the better ones we've had, and the chocolate babka was really good. I'll be back.
Our dining experience at The Rail House 1449 was outstanding! We would highly recommend this lovely restaurant to everyone. The entire staff went out of their way to accommodate our every need. Special thanks to the owner Bobbie for giving us an impromptu tour of the place after our dinner .. she is so awesome! All the food was divine .. our party of 4 shared crispy calamari and fantastic tamale appetizers (thank you Chef!!! we love you too!). The spicy lentil soup was so yummy and the salad with apples was superb! I had the Mahi-mahi special, so perfectly delicious, and my husband loved the salmon, and our friends totally enjoyed their entrees too. The St.Francis wine went with everything so well. Our desserts and cappuccino ended the meal right on spot. The service was very attentive and professional as well. This little restaurant is a total gem and we would definitely come back again.
Our Rail House experience was highly positive. We reserved a table for a special occasion. The service was slow to start because the facility was packed but eventually transformed to appropriate attentiveness. The waiter was conversant with specifics of the menu and wine list and had an engaging personality. Our courses were paced nicely. Menu choices and meal preparation translated to a pleasant dining experience with one flaw. Both main courses were prepared as we requested but were only 'lukewarm' when served. Not that this was a deal breaker, but we would have preferred our centers warmer. Taste was not affected and were enjoyed the entire meal. Our compliments!!
Good service, nice ambiance but the food was poorly thought out and badly executed.
Let me preface by saying our first experience at the Rail House was for Valentine's Day so our expectations heading in were that it would be fairly crowded and we'd be turned over rather quickly...both of which were not the case. Also it was a price fix menu ($75/person with gratuity added up front, which I was bit skeptical of but I kept an open mind). We arrived for our 5:45 reservation and were led immediately up a steep flight of stairs to the upstairs dining area to a cozy table for 2. The place reminded me of an old brownstone, which I really liked and there was a small bar setup in the room. We were greeted by the server after a few minutes and our drink orders were taken a few minutes later (a bit slow). After 5 min our server took our entire food order (as it was a fixed price menu for Valentine's Day). We received our salads within 5 minutes but still had not received our drinks (and the bar was 10 feet away!). Drinks came shortly thereafter. Salad was excellent though and I was pleased. Next course of mussels was also very good. Next came our main course and I had the surf and turf. I had ordered my filet medium rare but unfortunately it was really well done. Our server had not checked back with us and so I didn't send it back (something I really hate to do but considering the price and this wasn't a fancy place I would have). Unfortunately by time our server came back and I showed him the steak it was fairly late and he really didn't seem interested in making sure our food was right. It seemed like he was waiting on all the tales in the upstairs area which considering that the server was getting a guaranteed $15/person I think they could have done better.
Overall the food (except the overcooked steak) was excellent so I would give this place another shot but I hope they straighten out the service if they are going to continue to charge gratuity up front.
Everything was wonderful. An amazing lentil soup, scrumptious Frenched chicken, my husband's dessert was delicious, fabulous cocktails, great service... My new favorite restaurant.
Overall, the food was good although portions on the entrees could have been a bit larger and the soup was luke warm as oppose to hot or very hot. A little pricey for what you got, but I would certainly go back on a special occasion. Very comfortable and service was absolutely perfect,
Go if you haven't been there yet... It's incredible!!
I loved my entrée (salmon) but 2 people in my party weren't overly happy with the food, but the atmosphere was great, the server was very friendly and the prices were reasonable. I would certainly go back there.
I lived in Rahway five times over the last 40 years.
Did not discover the gem of the Rail House until a few months ago, when my neighbor took me there for dinner and introduced my to Bobby and the quaint little house. Food was wonderful, quiet and the best Martini ever. I returned for New Years Eve dinner. This restaurant is litte one block from my apartment, so they have acquired a new repeat customer.
