The Prune Ratings and Reviews
We went to the Prune for our wedding anniversary, prior to seeing a show. The service there was top-notch. We each had the 3 course meal. I had the albacore while my husband had the scallops. Both were absolutely delicious. The server brought us complimentary champagne during our appetizer, to help us celebrate. There was a watermelon gazpacho as a palate cleanser, before our meals. My husband had the lamb while I had the trout. Both were good, although not as amazing as the appetizers were. For dessert, I had the raspberry shortcake which was fantastic. My husband had the dark chocolate tort, which was just okay for him (note that the chocolate was more unsweetened than he preferred). After our dessert, the server brought over complimentary baklava, with Happy Anniversary written on the plate. Overall, it was a fantastic meal. It's not inexpensive though, as with wine and tip, our bill topped $300. But, for a special occasion, I would highly recommend the Prune!
The Prune is not pretentious but the food is upscale. If you want a 16 oz. steak and fries, this place is not for you. However if you want unique fair with a flair then give it a try. That is why we go to the Prune when we are in town. There was a delicious cocktail that was different from the usual. It was made with passion fruit. I had the chicken liver mousse with brioche and a relish which was just a touch of sweetness. (Sorry can't remember what it was) for starters and for the main I tried skate for the first time accompanied by a lovely reisling. All was delicious. No room for dessert. Service was attentive yet not intrusive , informative and friendly. Great dinner as always.
Three friends have make an annual trip to Stratford from Toronto for a play and Rundels dinner for over 10 years. This year we discovered that Rundels was no more and had to find a new restaurant. I admit we did not think we would find anything we would like as much as Rundels but you proved us wrong. The space was lovely. As was the staff. They were friendly and informative but not intrusive. The food was amazing. We have found our new tradition and hope to eat at the Prune for at least then next 10 years. Thanks for a lovely evening.
Special dinner for our anniversary. We each had a 3 course dinner with wine pairings. Every course was excellent for both of us. Wines were well matched to the food, and most were kinds not generally available. Staff were friendly and helpful. Prompt service but never rushed. Fairly expensive but worth it.
The Prune, formerly The Old Prune, has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Stratford. Under current management the restaurant has even improved on its on its excellent past. The warm friendly staff and the quality of the food made this a truly enjoyable experience and the best meal we had during our recent stay.
It was an extremely disappointing evening. The evening began with a positive tone as the wine was good and my wife's soup was very tasty although my beet salade was a bit 'soggy'. We were asked if we would like some bread and said okay...no idea that we would be charged for it. My beef was good but my wife's salmon was tasteless and the mix of vegetables was weird. Our servers tried hard but it was obvious they had no clue about the menu. When I got the bill and found out I had been charged $8 for bread, some pickles and a small amount of yogurt I almost lost it. Overall it was a poor experience. Not only would I not recommend this restaurant to anyone, I would tell anyone I know to avoid it and try one of the other wonderful restaurants in Stratford.
to be clear ...I have never written a negative review of any of the hundreds of restaurants I have been to across North America
We look forward to our meal at the Prune every year we come to Stratford. One of the many reasons the 8-hour drive from Chicago is worth it! The timing was perfect and portion sizes just right before you go sit in a theater for 2.5 hours. Can't wait to be back next year!
3 friends had a lovely pre-theatre dinner at The Prune. Some dishes were more successful than others. I made good choices but one of my friends found her dinner too spicy. The staff was exceptional but the atmosphere was a little "stuffy". It is a beautiful venue.
We have been to the main Bruce restaurant a couple of times but wanted a more informal dining experience during this Stratford Festival visit. Enjoyed!!! Great venue. Nice wine and beer selection. Four of us enjoyed different menu items. Service was great! Would definitely recommend and will plan to return.
We had heard good things about The Prune but it didn't live up to our expectations. Service was slow and sloppy. Servers didn't seem to know much about the dishes or wines. Menu sounded creative but what was served was very disappointing. Breast of duck was well-done, not medium-rare and accompaniments bland. Skate wing was way too buttery and rich. The only dishes enjoyed by our party of four were chicken liver mousse and tortellini. Wine list was limited and selections didn't match menu items.
We had a great meal at The Prune. This is no longer a stuffy restaurant with a limited menu. The creativity involved and the quality of our meals was outstanding. We especially enjoyed the chicken liver mousse appetizer and our main courses of lamb and duck breast.
We celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary with friends who were celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary at the Prune. The experience from the greeting at the door when we entered to the good byes when we left was exceptional. There was a good variety of choices on the menu, very different from the meals that one would find elsewhere. Beautiful presentation, all questions answered politely, service was very timely and we had a wonderful meal at our leisure and were able to make it to the play on time. We can't say enough good about our dinner. They also gave us all a nice surprise at the end of our meal to make it more special on our anniversaries.
Let me start by saying our server was fantastic and made great recommendations. I also loved how they cleaned the crumbs from the table. The food quality was great as was the presentation. In my opinion the food lacked flavour i.e. salt. I'm not one to douse my food in salt but I know how important it is in cooking. Everything was bland. The wine I had was delicious and the sourdough bread with pickles was great too but my mousse was bland. The salmon was cooked to perfection but the potatoes underneath were flavourless. The restaurant itself is great and the quality is great, but the flavour is lacking. Again, this is only my opinion. I would still recommended people try them.
Went for pre theatre dinner so it was not a particularly intimate meal as the restaurant was very busy with other theatre goers.
Attentive and knowledgeable service.
Delicious and unusual cocktails.
Great and creative use of seasonal produce.
A foodie spot .Highlight for me was the skate.Perfectly executed and as delicious as any I've eaten in France.
I had a 2 course meal with wine. The food was absolutely delicious; I have no complaints about it. Unfortunately, I had ordered a third item (a side) that was never prepared - I forgot I had even ordered it until the end of my meal, and by that time I was quite full and didn't need it, so I informed my server. However, I was a bit disappointed that I didn't receive my full order, considering that this is a high end, expensive restaurant. That said, the food I did eat was excellent and the service was excellent. Everyone from the hostess to my servers were attentive without being annoying, and were very friendly and pleasant. The simple, clean decor and ambiance is lovely without being stuffy or pretentious. The restaurant is very accommodating of food allergies, etc. so simply let them know of any such issues when making reservations. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for a delicious and special meal before going to the theatre. It's great to eat at alone, with another person, or in a group. I'll definitely eat here again the next time I visit Stratford!
The Prune is an expensive restaurant which is pretentious. The food is average and the portions very small..You must order bread as there is otherwise not enough to eat.
All the dishes we had were ok,but not exceptional.
The re are many other restaurants in Stratford that are just as good a or better and the price is much less.
The drink pour here is very small.it requires 2 wine glass pours to equal the pour of a regular restaurant.
There was nothing bad about the restaurant,it was jus t very average and overpriced
The Prune never disappoints but it does appear that this season's menu needs some refreshing. The menu is almost identical to the 2016 summer selections. In addition the wait staff seem not to have a designated leader or manager. Now everything flowed well and the kitchen turned out amazing food, if the prices were lower this would be a real steal. That said for the price the pressure is on for everything to be just so. You won't be let down, but you won't be blown over either.
My son and I make this a must-do on our annual trip to Stratford. The theater is important to us but also fine dining matters. The Price Fixe menu is a good choice, always something new and exciting to taste. The chicken liver mousse is a favorite. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the offerings.
We were in town for 4 days for the Stratford Festival. The Prune came highly recommended and did not disappoint. My salmon main course was delicious as was the squid appetizer.
The only down-side to the evening was one we too frequently experience when dining at a restaurant where we have booked on Open Table. We were led to possibly the worst table in the restaurant, by the service area and entrance to the dining room. It seems that this happens because many people who book on Open Table do not show up. That being said, I had spoken to a woman from the restaurant the day before, we wanted a table in the garden and she seemed to have the foresight to know that may not happen due to the forecast of rain. I said hopefully we will get a nice table anyway, but we did not until we complained and got a table in the front room. So they did accomodate us and we had a nice pre-theatre meal.
The Prune is one of my favourite restaurants in Stratford. The cuisine is tasty and creative. You can choose between a two, three or four course meal. The service is outstanding. It's well worth the drive to Stratford or if you are there for a play, it's an excellent choice for dinner. Just tell them that you are going to the theatre and they will pace the meal accordingly. Will I return? Absolutely....without a doubt.
One of the best restaurants I have yet to encounter. A major problem Is that the kitchen cannot keep up with the size of the place. Our order arrived 60 min after we did, which is a bit on the slow side. The waitress did what she could. I would recommend anyone hoping to attend the theatre at 8 PM arrive no later than 5:30; preferably pick a night when nothing else is happening. Aside from this concern, the place is about as good as it gets.
