Like going home to old friends you haven’t seen for awhile. Exquisite food and friendly charming service. Did not disappoint. What you need to know is you will pay a bit more here. And you should. This is slow prepared food in a quaint heritage house. Not every room is the same nor should it be in a heritage house. Bravo on an excellent season!
Both we and a few other diners we met by chance the next day remarked on the quality and creativity of the food. For me the wine pairing was the special point, all very hard to fine and wonderfully crafted wine that perfectly complimented the dish. The prune is not inexpensive but when you need a special dinner you will not do better in Stratford or anywhere on a couple hours drive.
Always a creative menu, good but pricey wines and imaginative desserts. We make sure we book for dinner every time we come to Stratford.
The food was well prepared, well presented, and well paced by our attentive waiter. It was a very fine meal. We will add this restaurant to our list of go-to spots for a fine dinner when we are in Stratford, ON.
ambiance was great, food was wonderful, service was welcoming and efficient.
My all time favourite Stratford place to dine. Exceptional menu and wine pairings in a simple but sophisticated venue.
Sorry, but their prices are getting bigger and their portion are getting smaller and their choices are get weirder. Not for us any more.
Despite the fact that we've lived in Stratford for several years, we'd only visited the Prune once, for an event dinner. This past Saturday we went as a couple--and the experience was simply perfect. The food was extraordinarily good--clear, rich, bold flavours, well-balanced and beautifully presented. The staff is warm and friendly, and of course the setting is very lovely, in a modified Victorian house that gives one a glimpse of a cozy garden outside and offers comfortable seating within. And the bar knows how to make a proper Whisky Sour--something that seems to be vanishingly rare these days! We were very pleased.
There was something a bit odd about dining here.. the food was good - maybe very good - but the sense you got was that they thought it was better than you did. Kinda like they were trying too hard - some aspects were just over the top fussy but honestly we've had better meals elsewhere for not nearly the same $$$. We had the 3 course fix prix (the smallest selection) and with one glass of wine ($18) plus coffee, tea and tip the bill came to over $250. It just didn't feel like we'd had that kind of a dinner.
We won't be back.
Pricey restaurant with small portions and amazing service.
This is our second year in a row at The Prune and we were delighted once again. The Prune is now of our must go restaurants when we visit Stratford.
The chef has a creative and delicate touch with all of the dishes. Everyone was delighted with their choices without exception. Mains included monkfish, pork belly and steak frite, all perfectly prepared and presented.
The Prune suggests a 3 or 4 course Prix Fixe, so we like to go on an evening when we don't have a play and can take our time to enjoy their excellent cuisine. However most of the patrons were all going to the play following their dinners. As the portions are reasonable, the fixed menu would not hinder one's enjoyment of the play afterwards.
The food was extraordinary and the service was lovely. As a result of a couple of miscommunications between wait staff and the kitchen, they served us an additional dish while we waited, and then comped some of our drinks. I was extremely impressed with how this was handled. We will return when next in town.
A wonderful meal to close out our day in beautiful Stratford; indeed a dinner fit for Henry the VII!
The Prune is now the best restaurant in Stratford - great food, service and ambience.
Our meal was amazing from start to finish. From the crispy fried green tomatoes to the delicate squash filled ravioli to the creamy creme caramel, each bite was unique and delicious. We enjoyed many additional unique flavours with extra starters and sharing plates. We had a lovely time at the Prune!
Ambiance, service and food were excellent. The three of us all had different appetizers, main courses and desserts. Each had the opportunity to taste all of them and we agreed that it was all terrific.
The staff was personable, courteous and very helpful. The wine that was recommended was both suitable and reasonable in price. The "tea" sommelier was expert in assisting in this choice also.
The Prune is not for the "faint of wallet", but the entire experience was was well worth the price. One doesn't mind paying for a wonderful dinner exprience.
The service was wonderful but I really did not like the food or selection of foods to order.
Way too expensive I felt for what I got.
We dine at Prune every year when we attend the festival. We have always had an exceptional dining experience. The food is excellent. The service is attentive, considerate and most friendly. This year there was mix-up with umbrellas. Mine went to another patron. Tony went and retrieved my umbrella on his way to work the following day, a considerate and generous act.
Excellent meal - knowledgeable and charming server - our meal was superb - from start to finish - would not hesitate to return or recommend to others - thank you
We booked our table well in advance, yet we were seated at a table in the farthest corner for a 2-person table, against a wall/window, with minimal privacy, despite an entire other section being available/empty for optional seating(s) and quieter dining;
We were offered warm "tap" water -- no ice, etc., and subsequently, we were passed by twice at later time w/o being offered tap water at all, despite needing refill(s);
Chairs were very uncomfortable;
We asked (politely) AFTER appetizer course to change one dessert originally ordered at start of meal, and waiter seemed rather reluctant to do so -- even though patrons at a table near us didn't order their dessert(s) until AFTER entrees had been completed (which makes much more sense);
We were offered "bread" with our meal which we accepted (but there was NO mention of the add'l $5.00 cost added) -- Unthinkable that bread would not be "included" with a 2-person meal @ $180.00 plus $$ re drinks/, supplementary" costs, taxes and tip!
Not an experience we expected, and certainly did not live up to the reviews we read on line unfortunately!
This is a newer version of The (Old) Prune which was equally wonderful! Lovely service and a relatively quiet and welcoming location with parking available. The food was a treat and often very interesting; I have to say that my lamb with faintly Middle Eastern notes, was superb and the most tender possible. Presentation was great. Desserts failed a bit in both presentation and the "WOW" factor, but wine suggested was perfect.
Truthfully we had been there about 30 yeRs ago and thought it was overpriced and not that good. After all these years we decided to give it another chance. I’m so glad we did. The food was delicious and not heavy. Lots of interesting combinations. The 3 course meal left us full but not stuffed.
Also an addition to the building was built 18 years ago that was very sophisticated looking. Can’t wait to go again.
Great food, good service, we're not wine people but they have a tea sommelier who mixes the best teas, both hot and cold!
I loved the price fixed menu and enjoyed each course. The service is excellent!
It was quite noisy and busy downstairs so they kindly ushered us upstairs into a quiet, lovely room where we were they only ones. It was absolutely a treat as we
had just put our four grandkids on the bus for home after two very fun but hectic days in Stratford!!
We were treated like royalty and our dinner was perfect!
What a beautiful final night to share at our favourite restaurant in Stratford!!
We were there before attending the theatre and had the fixed price three course theatre option. I had Monk Fish as my main course and my husband enjoyed the lamb.
The Prune has always been our go to place for the best in Stratford. Everything was excellent!
The team at Prune made our 5-year wedding anniversary very special! The service was good and the food was delicious. Cute spot with amazing atmosphere. Highly recommend!
The Prune is an excellent restaurant to go to in Stratford. It never fails to please. There is a wonderful variety of well prepared dishes on their menu. The food is beautifully presented. The service is always excellent at this restaurant. I recommend this choice highly.
This is one of the brst restsurants O have ever been to and I have been to restsurants all over North America.
Delicious, eclectic food choices, excellent wine pairings, a real delight
The corn ravioli entree was outstanding.
Wonderful, imaginative menu. I had pattypan squash and could have had squash blossoms. The three-course menu allowed us flexibility—-two starters instead of a dessert—-that made for perfect choices, and there were 2 lagniappe songs. Expensive, and worth it.
Went to a play after dinner. Pricey but worth it.
NEW CHEF AND SOUS CHEFS ARE DOING AN OUTSTANDING JOB.
SUPERB FLAVORS, INNOVATIVE DISHES AND LOVELY TASTY FOOD
A FOODIE'S DREAM PLACE
The food was very tasty and the service was excellent. My companion had the pickerel and I had the chicken. I highly recommend the sour dough bread and the devilled eggs as starters. Dessert was also very tasty. My companion had the cheeses (local ones) and I had the peach dessert. We go to the Prune every year. We will continue to do so.
Best culinary experience we have had in years...started with the butter they churn on site, and went up from there...chicken moist and tender...excellent personal service...most knowledgable waitress able to
explain both the ingredients and cooking for all choices on the menu...expensive, but worth it...should have a Michelin star!
creative menu prepared well...good service but could have been paced better..too much time between the first course and the main one.....but , we did get done in time to make the theatre easily...very enjoyable...will return next season.
Great food & service. Tuna appetizer was wonderful. Everything was not too heavy and delicious
We very much enjoyed our dinner, but the prices are up from a year ago and dinner was at least 50% more than at many other Stratford restaurants. If money is no object, by all means book a meal, it's probably the best food in Stratford.
