Amazing service, amazing food
Totally enjoyed our meal at The Press Gang. The ambiance was very cozy and antique. The service excellent and the food delicious.
Disappointed in this Halifax gem. Menu items were a throw back to the 90s, bbq sauce on the steak was too heavy and smothered the flavour of the meat. The sweetened butter was just....weird.
My manhattan and oysters at the beginning of the meal were a highlight. They still do amazing oysters.
Called yesterday wanting to describe my experience to them before posting here. No call back.
Food was not good at all
Service was great, very friendly and attentive
Wonderful meal, wonderful staff, fabulous atmosphere. Wish I had visited sooner. Definitely going back.
Terrific atmosphere in an historic space with candlelit stone and beams. Food is first rate accompanied by a very good wine list. The live music creates a vibrant but not overpowering dynamic and the service is attentive.
Excellent dinner and service, great amount of food
An awesome New Year's Eve menu. Food was delicious, service was excellent. Great ambiance, quiet intimate table location - what more could you ask for. Happy New Year 2019;-)
Everything was great. I found the chef yelling out to the servers a bit distracting. This would be my only negative complaint. We enjoyed the meal except for one of the deserts.
The space is historic and has a lot of character. The service was great and our appetizers were fine, but the main courses were very disappointing. The Lobster Gnocchi was over sauced, over seasoned and resembled a bowl of soup more than a plate of pasta, also the lobster was chewy and tough. The Wild Board Chop was overcooked and dry but was accompanied by a delicious barley risotto (the star of the meal!) Overall we felt the quality of the food did not nearly match the price. You are paying for a unique ambiance, but I wouldn't recommend or return to this restaurant myself.
Had an awesome time with family, great food/wine, good service, wonderful place. Will definitely return.
Our 3rd time and the food was Great yet again. The Drill did not disappoint.
Salad lacked dressing. The Risotto was gummy, not creamy. Fish overcooked.
Oysters are excellent. Boar chops were very good.
One thing that is consistent is the excellent level of service and restaurant cleanliness. We have never had poor service at the Press Gang.
The ambience here is so charming it's hard to bash it. Easily one of my favorite spots to kick back. That being said, two out of three of us at the table were very disappointed in their food choices. At this price point, everything should be phenomenal or at least meet expectations and it missed the mark by a lot; especially the lobster gnocchi. Still, a great vibe and a halifax staple if you order the right things. My oysters were excellent.
Went for a staff Christmas party. Overall a good experience with exceptional food. Service was attentive though somewhat absent, especially given the number of other patrons in the restaurant. There was also some room for improvement when it comes to suggestions for paired wines, oyster preferences, and other complementary dishes—this knowledge was lacking during our visit. In addition, while the food was delicious and cooked very well, portion sizes were underwhelming for the price of the dishes. Would recommend, overall, and would visit again.
It was a great meal with great service , although a little expensive for some tastes !
Fantastic restaurant! Excellent food that was perfectly prepared and prompt friendly service. Loved the atmosphere. An amazing dining experience overall and would highly recommend this restaurant.
The food was really good. I had Lamb Shanks, and Pumpkin Spice Creme Brule for dessert was excellent. Service was efficient, and servers were friendly and helpful. This is my 4th time dining here, and it never fails me each time. My work colleagues enjoyed their meal and had a great time.
The oysters were fantastic. The cocktails as well. The mains tasted like they were boiled and then microwaved. Bland. Almost inedible.
I was persuaded (read fooled) by all of the positive reviews. I would not recommend this restaurant at all. At all.
On top of it all, it was expensive. I'd like a refund.
Poor choices of wine by the glass
Steak was dry
I take the time to write this review, for your benefit not mine, and it gives me a message that it has to be 50 characters. I will add this to my list of complaints about my experience
The swordfish in the menu was delicious. The torch oyster was amazing .
Best Oyster and Scotch selection in Halifax. Excellent service and cozy atmosphere. Stay classy Press Gang.
We had an amazing dinner here during our weekend in Halifax! The ambiance was great, the live jazz was sensational and the food was fantastic! We can’t wait to come back here the next time we are in town
The chefs tasting menu was fantastic. Music and ambiance made the evening. Relaxed service with no rush complimented the 300 year old location.
The bread and herbed butter was very nice. The appetizers were lovely. Tasty and well presented. The scallops nicely cooked...juicy and delicious. The duck on the overdone side though. The sherbet was delightful. What was disappointing was the main course. It had shank of lamb, scallops in bacon and there was way too much on the plate. It looked like someone had piled left overs on to the plate. The lamb was incredibly overdone. The main course should have been lighter considering the size of the previous courses.
The dessert was choclatey and just right for size after a lengthy meal. Some of this review sounds negative but the meal overall was lovely and certainly the ambience of the place is hard to beat.
The food was outstanding. All four has something different and all thought theirs was outstanding. I would add that we also thought that the portion was quite satisfying.
The food was terrible and my bill came to $180...painful. There was also an incredibly bad odour in the place. It was my first time there and did not live up to the hype.
So as always the oysters were amazing and the waitress had great knowledge about wine and food. However after spending 250 dollars and moving to the bar to enjoy the entertainment . The bar staff were Unattentive and actually forgot to bring our second ordered drink and when we finally gave up and settled with our waitress, who was great , had the nerve to ask if we still wanted another drink. Shame on him. Should be moved to the scullery
The food wasn't as good as the ambiance.
The service was fantastic and the food was out of this world! We are still talking about how good it was...and licking our chops.
We came for my sisters 30th birthday celebration. We had an amazing time! The service was amazing. The food was exceptional. I will most certainly be back!
The Press Gang is our go-to location for special occasions in Halifax. From the special touches (complimentary sparkling wine for anniversary) through the ambiance, service and food we have never left disappointed. Often the chef comes around to check on your experience during the evening.
We had a fantastic dinner at The Press Gang! I would highly recommend it!
I'm afraid everything we ordered was considerably over cooked. The scallops in the starter were like rubber. The halibut was also very over cooked and therefore very dry, and overly salty. The wild boar chop was very over cooked and tough. As the chop was very thin I imagine it would be quite hard to not over cook it. The hand crafted cocktails were quite nice. However, for the price of the entrées this was certainly a disappointment.
Amazing food and service!
Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Both food and service were exceptional and the ambiance was cozy and rustic....loved the candles.
Flawless! Would definitely go back. Get oyster for sure. The restaurant is in a historic building with brick and old wood. Candlelight dinner could be a good romantic evening if thats what you're after. Seafood risotto was excellent with lobster shrim and scallops. Perfectly done. Wine list was great high end to affordable. Handcrafted cocktails are epic here.
Went there as a birthday dinner for my wife. Friends had recommended it, as they often still talked about how good the food was.
The foie gras was creamy and exquisite the blackened halibut wasn’t spicy just blackened, the heat came from the delicious cornbread.
The duck was in an amazing cherry Demi glacé.
230 different scotches.
Great service and food
Had “The Drill” , which was more food then I could consume. Nevertheless, I would recommend it since food was delicious and loved the surprise of each course.
