The Henry Room
Our 18th century private dining room comfortably accommodates 15 guests. In addition, we offer one semi-private space, suitable for up to 28 guests.
The oysters were great. We had a scallop appetizer that had one cold scallop that shouldn’t have been there. The proteins from the entrees were very good. The vegetables with the mains were horrible. The potatoes were over cooked, leathery, and hard. The other vegetables, carrots and brussels, were underdone and way under seasoned. Drinks and service excellent.
Great space and atmosphere. Oysters were a bit expensive but excellent. Chef has the laudable custom of coming by tables to chat. Every thing we ordered was well prepared.
The risotto was amazing! It lets you try a little bit of all the Nova Scotia seafood (two big shrimp, two big scallops, a piece of halibut, a generous amount of lobster meat), plus lots of vegetables and the rice itself. And the ambiance is pretty great. I'd highly recommend it!
Great meal, and loved the ambience.
Bus boy was hovering and a bit to eager to clear dishes. Kitchen staff were loud.
Great food, lovely atmosphere! Will be back!
All around wonderful experience!!!! I felt like I was sitting in a 200 year old Scottish oyster House with all the food quality of a 5 star restaurant
Very cool atmosphere and decore. I kept waiting for a pirate or a 1920s prohibition gangster to walk in. Food was awesome, absolutely perfectly cooked. Wait staff were very thoughtful and appropriately attentive.
Wonderful reception from hostess and we did not have reservations. Lucky to get a table on a Saturday evening. The restaurant is like stepping back to 1759 with brick and stone walls surrounding diners. Our table was in the remains of a fireplace and our chairs rested on the hearth. Authentic wood beams and flickering candlelight added to the ambience. Waiter was lovely and had great recommendations. One of us had a whole lobster and the other seafood in croute. We shared oysters for an appetizer and enjoyed a delightful banana/chocolate pastry with cinnamon ice cream. Truly a special evening.
Fabulous meal for our 30th anniversary. We had The Drill so the chef made a special 4 course meal for us. We were spoiled with complimentary sparkling wine to start. The 2 seafood appetizers were yummy and the wine recommendation by our server was perfect. Our main was beef tenderloin with lots of veggies - it was wonderful. We should have been too full for dessert but we ate it anyway! We have enjoyed a couple of meals at the Press Gang before but We are both so happy we chose this restaurant for our special celebration.
I had the coffee rubbed beef tenderloin with a jus that I could have drunk from a glass! It was magnificent. My tenderloin was cooked well done perfectly. Fingerling potatoes and carrots finished off dinner. A very full plate that I could not finish.
The building itself, the second oldest in Halifax, exudes history and ambiance. I do suggest not sitting in the bar area as I found it chilly (October). We were moved to another room without an issue.
My husband had the special comprising of a seafood melange on puff pastry with scallops. He loved it.
Excellent service, real old time rustic charm to the restaurant. Very good food. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
On vacation. Looked for fine dining restaurant and found online this restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere, good service excellent food. Being foodies we ordered 5 apps as well as entree. Chef Brian came to our table and introduced himself. My son in law who is a chef and has a fine dining restaurant of his own had a lively discussion re food and food prep. Brian also gave us the story behind the name PRESS GANG as well as the building. He made a special presentation of all his deserts. He created a silver tray of under the ocean and ships out of his deserts. It was not only beautiful to look at as well as delicious. The evening was wonderful. Once our travels were over the last night before leaving Halifax we ate there again with my having the most delicious whole lobster. We highly recommend the Press Gang for your dining pleasure. Heather, Anthony and Nancy(Smith) Alphano.
The food was phenomenal along with our host. She went out of the way to make us laugh and was great for suggestions with the menu. Will absolutely return again.
Fabulous dinner and excellent service and ambiance.
Best Halibut ever. Also loved the special lobster cake. Service was good and the place has a nice intimate feel to it.
Wicked good food, I highly recommend it.
Outstanding. Loved everything about it! We tried to go back again, but couldn’t get in.
Outstanding in every regard. Rich was excellent as was all of the service around him. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, excellent ambiance & the perfect level of attention.
We went to The Press Gang because of a friend’s recommendation (her “favourite fancy place” in Halifax). We had high expectations and we were not disappointed. They’ve built a wonderful, intimate décor in this old building, with excellent understated service and wonderful food to round out the experience. Our rating of the sounds level was because we were seated next to a table of loud-ish businessmen (oh, well, not enough to ruin the experience). We had seared scallops, beef carpaccio (served as a canape), salmon, and flourless chocolate cake – all courses were delightful. The added touch was a table visit from the chef, Brian. He was genuine in his interest in our experience and obviously very proud of the restaurant. Well done!
Wonderful food and service in a very interesting old building. Great ambiance.
Very good for the money will 100% recommend this to my friends
Great night out, friendly staff and excellent food
Food is wonderful. service is amazing (to the point they called me the next day to see if my wife lost an ear ring). Would have loved to be able to hear the live duet .... but the noisy people at the next table made sure that didn't happen. I found the menu small but tasteful. Great wine list and fantastic desserts! We will be back!
Once again, the whole dinner experience was first class.
Food, Service, Atmosphere. Definitely recommend.
Service was slow. Overall the food was good although my wife’s pork chop was not good although they did I’d deducted it from the bill. Waitress and buzz boy not that attentive. Overall we had great expectations for the place and were disappointed.
This was a nice restaurant with good food. It’s unique setting makes it worth a visit.
That said. . .we were celebrating a very important event, which I noted on my reservation, I was very surprised that no mention was made of this. This type of attention to detail is what I expect from this type of restaurant.
The tables are very close together which makes privacy not possible. Our table was in a corner and I was pressed up against a vertical room fan, not exactly what I expected in a high end dining establishment. The food was good, not great, but good.
The service was adequate. . . The dishes were served so quickly that we felt rushed. Our reservation had been for 6 30 and the bill was put on our table at 7 30. . . that was for a four course dinner. . . not the leisurely dining experience we were looking forward to.
Our table was cleared of our bread basket and my husband’s drink while both still had some left that we had intended to finish. Definitely not what I expect in this level of restaurant.
In short the only reason I would recommend this location for an evening out would be for the unique location. I would suggest someone come here for a pre dinner drink and then retire to a restaurant that has 4 star service.
We enjoyed an awesome dinner at the Press Gang. We celebrated our 35th Wedding anniversary weekend dinner with them. They surprised us with two glasses of complimentary champagne and seated us in a very romantic semi-private alcove. We enjoyed craft cocktails, local Nova Scotia wines, oysters on the half shell, some of the best chowder we have ever had, and a seafood feast which included shrimp, scallops, haddock, salmon, and a grilled lobster. The food was delicious! Our server Lindsay was attentive, knowledgeable, fun, entertaining, and even laughed at my bad jokes!. A big thank you to the Press Gang and our server Lindsay for making our celebration special, amazing, and a very special evening to remember 👍🥂
Fabulous dinner included a personal chat with Chef Brian! Gorgeous food and scrumptious. Fabulous atmosphere. Service attentive without being fussy. Wow!
Building was incredible. Food and service top notch
Very expensive for small portions
The restaurant was charming and the service was great! We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely return next time we visit Halifax.
Family of four, two much harder to please than the other two! Not often we all walk away completely satisfied but you nailed it Press Gang!
Delicious food with good service. Interesting menu. Beautiful setting.
Food was well prepared with fresh ingredients. Server was helpful and professional and ambience perfect
It had been 10 years since our last visit and this one was up to expectations. Great ambiance, fine food and good service. We’ll be back.
Excellent food and service.
Given the reviews that I read, our experience was deeply disappointing. My oysters were fresh and served with the appropriate accompaniments. My halibut was cooked properly and seasoned with light herbs. My meal was served on what I think was a coupe plate and this resulted in the fish becoming mixed in with the vegetables and the cloying pink sauce for the gnocchi. It tasted horrible and, as my guest commented, looked like a $45.00 plate of macaroni and cheese.
My guest was disappointed by the presentation of her beef tenderloin dinner on a heavy, blue plate in contrast to my white one. Her meat was served medium rare and was tasty. However, the fingerling potatoes had been refried in oil and were wrinkled, dry and tasteless. In addition, the sauce, that my best guess was a horrific spinach puree, served with the meat dish was inedible. Again at $45.00, it was a big disappointment.
We shared a satisfactory chocolate dessert.
We turned down the table beside the coat rack at the front door and were seated in a quiet back room. Our server was friendly, attentive and responded quickly when my guest asked her to speak to the gentleman using his cell phone at the table.
Made reservation through Open Table months ago. Were seated by the door and hostess stand. Other tables for 2 nearby were unoccupied during our visit. As more and more people arrived our location became worse and worse.
Our waiter was helpful. He was attentive. We did not feel rushed. The food was very good. I would recommend The Press Gang. I would certainly return .
Our experience at the Press Gang was absolutely fantastic. It really has it all... historical intrigue, live music (jazz), great location, impressive menu, outstanding service, and the most mouth-watering food made by an amazing, creative and conscientious chef. We chose a menu item which was a complete mystery... basically leaving ourselves open to the Chef's creative whim. It included 4 courses... all beautifully presented and delicious beyond words. We had absolutely no regrets about choosing this unique restaurant. It was not just a meal, but a memorable experience which was an absolute highlight during our visit to Halifax.
