The Port is a fine dining restaurant located on the lower level of the historic St. James Hotel built in 1875. There are many original treasures to be found in the restaurant. Among them is the iron-gated wine cellar, once used as the hotel's bank vault. At the Port restaurant we serve Contemporary American and Midwestern food, from regional favorites to reinterpretations of classical dishes; all of our seafood is flown in fresh primarily from Alaska and the west coast. The Port is best known for sourcing the best quality seasonal ingredients available. Our menu changes frequently to reflect the current offerings from our region, delivering the best of our local bounty.

The Port is a Winner of Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2014.This is the 11th year that The Port has earned this prestigious honor. We are also listed as one of the few restaurants in Minnesota with very reasonable wine prices. www.winespectator.com

Outstanding dinner this evening! We both had Osso Bucco and it was delicious. We’re in town for a wedding and are staying at the St. James.

The four of us each ordered something different and the food was excellent. Tender scallops, a delicious bowl of mussels and broth, and falling-off-the-bone osso buco were highlights. Our server was attentive and efficient. The only downside was the ambient noise from the kitchen, which is due to the large opening in the stone walls of this historic building.

I like time between each course of a meal, however, our server gave us too much time. Also, we got our bill and no pen to sign it. After waiting 6 minutes I went and found a pen. We had 2.5 hours penned in for our meal & barely made our show. We were planning to walk around downtown, but this didn’t happen.

We are old friends of the St. James, it has been one of our destinations for Valentines get away for years. The Port restaurant is a fine dining experience, very good liquor and wine selections, top shelf. It's ambiance in the basement of a 1800's hotel, with the stone walls, decorated with pictures of historic steamboats, low lit quiet with real fireplace adding to the atmosphere. It's the place for a romantic evening. The meals are elegantly prepared and presented and quality food. If you want to get away from the city, but still have quality city like atmosphere and food you can't go wrong with The Port and the St. James.

We went to the Port for my moms birthday and we had a very nice evening! I’m sad that they didn’t do anything for her birthday, like a dessert.. but over all the food was amazing. I had a juicy fillet and the chipotle sweet potatoes are an amazingly unique in flavor! Our server seemed new but she was able to get all of our food orders right and refilled our waters/drinks in a timely manner!

Wonderful ambiance and authentic decor. The food was very good, salad and scallops, and the brandy old fashioned was superb!

Following an outstanding dining experience at the St James Veranda restaurant we decided to try the Port Restaurant. The ambiance of the facility was fantastic and suitable for a memorable dinner. The Prohibition cocktails were fun. Unfortunately, that is where the good comments cease. Our waitress had not been trained in proper serving etiquette and frequently the men were served before the ladies at our table. All of us ordered the French Onion soup and found it to have an unpleasant sweetness and after taste. We had four different entrees, scallops, rib eye, strip steak and prawns. All of us rated them mediocre at best. When the order for prawns arrived, it was small shrimp. Our waitress said the prawns were not good so they substituted shrimp but gave you more. The shrimp they substituted were very small in size and number and the entire dish lacked taste. This was one of the worst presentations of a prawn dish we have experienced. Note: management did remove this dish from our bill. All in all a very disappointing dining experience for all of us and we agreed this would not be a restaurant we would visit again.

Everything was perfect! Our meal was delicious and very interesting. I’m can only drink gluten free vodka and no sugar mix- they had a cucumber drink with Tito’s vodka that was perfect.
We were celebrating Christmas with our adult children after dinner went to
Jimmy’s and enjoyed the music and the pub atmosphere.

Very nice restaurant in the basement of a historic building. The price isn’t that bad until you discover everything is ala carte. No sides or salads included with the entree. Food was unique and good though.

Not as good as it has been in years past. For years we have went and always found the meal and experience to be be impeccable. My beet salad was plain; rest of the meal was very good, just not what it used to be. Their menu appears to have lost its artistic flair, maybe their chef has moved on?

Food was pretty good. I liked my filet, my husband did not care for the prime rib. Nothing comes with the dood, so that was
disappointing because sides were expensive. Also, they did not have our reservation when we got there even though I made a reservation through open table. We were lucky it wasn't busy and got in, but worried that will happen again. Overall it was a good experience.

My wife and I booked a large room at the St James Hotel and a dinner at The Port. Our waitress (AMY) was fantastic. She was the type of professional that didn't need to write anything down, knew the menu, and got it correct. She was there when you needed a refill or such, and left you alone when you didn't need anything. And.....they made her bus her own tables. We gave her a BIG tip.

Now for The Port. We both had filet mignon, Caesar salad and a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. There were four large shrimp with tails in a cocktail glass with sauce. The shrimp was some of the best we've tasted in some time.
The Caesar salad was about five leaves spread out with some "bacon" like grilled pork fat topped with a poached egg. Very odd. There wasn't much to it and it only tasted all right. Not great. I'd much rather have had a traditional Caesar salad.
The Filet Mignon was on the small side, but tasted good. It was served with a half sliced tomato topped with Parmesan bread crumbs. It again was all right.
The desert was a white chocolate cheese cake and a chocolate lava cake. Both tasted good.
The bill was $128.00; we expected more for this price.
The Port is in the basement of the St James Hotel and the ambience was all right. The chairs were terrible. The cushions were in desperate need of replacing because the padding was so worn out. It was uncomfortable sitting there for an hour to eat a nice meal.
The St James Hotel used to have the Victoria Room, which was some of the best dining around. It paid driving down from the cities to have a nice meal. This dining room is no longer there. Pity.
All in all; The Port needs to "up" their game.

The most tender filet mignon I have ever experienced. A good menu with a small but perfect selection for anyone. I enjoy scotch, and they had a few Islay distillery notable favorites. The atmosphere is just right, no screaming children, great service, and overall an interesting place to dine. No negatives, I look forward to making this a frequent destination before shows at the Sheldon Theater. A1+.

The food was not good. My husband ordered the NY strip and had to send it back. He could not eat it. Our Caesar salads had 4 pieces of lettuce with 1/2" strip of side park, a poached egg, all on top a piece of their toasted bread. Mash potatoes were terrible. We will not go back----great atmosphere to have just a drink.

It's hard to say enough about this place -- we loved it. It was a special date-night for us and we may have had some pent-up demand, but it was great. We started with a glass of wine at the bar and then migrated to a perfectly comfortable and quaint dining area where we ordered oysters (my wife LOVED them), port fries (tasty -- appropriate for sharing), a beet salad (nice size, subtle dressing, very tasty), Osso Buco (pork shank) that was to die for and Farratto ( as Faro-based risotta like grain) that was phenomenal. We ordered two desserts as well and honestly loved every bite of every dish.

We will definitely be going back -- and it's a 1 hour drive (and worth it).

Unbelievable atmosphere and service. The food was amazing. Except way overpriced for the amount of food you actually got. The filet mignon was 32$ and was very small. As well as two small sliders with fries were 14 $. Overall outstanding restaurant just extremely expensive and small quantities.

We were celebrating our anniversary and so expected to sit in the dining room...not the bar. We were informed when we got there that the dining room was closed. We were very disappointed that we did not have the ambiance for our anniversary dinner that we expected.
We made our reservation on internet and it did not let us know the dining room was closed.

This restaurant is very unique. The setting is quite historical. The server was just ok, she questioned my partner when he wanted to order a bigger size prime rib. (he's a big guy)Otherwise the ambiance was quiet, and my meal was Fabulous. I had the scallops cooked in capers and butter sauce. Browned on the outside and very flavorable and tender.
We didn't know the prime rib meal came with a potate otherwise we wouldn't have ordered so many sides-as everything seemed to be ala carte.
One of my best meals out for sure.

We celebrated my husbands 75th birthday. It is a very nice quaint restaurant. We felt prices were on the expensive side but yet food was delicious. The menu is limited. The Port could have capped off the night with a small dessert for my husband. Perhaps they will consider this. Cocktails were mixed perfectly. Thank you.

I fail to understand or appreciate that restaurants always seat people in the same areas. Although my wife and I were the only diners initially, the next four parties were seated in tables on all sides of us. This in spite of the fact there were other vacant tables throughout the dining area. And there were several other waiters working to serve the other patrons, so it was not about a shortage of available help. We are very private people and we are not interested in conversations of others when we are enjoying a special occasion dinner.

The Port is one of the classiest restaurants in Red Wing. We were here for New Year's Eve & they had a special 3-course menu, with wine pairings. Everything was excellent, from the lobster bisque, to the Heluka Pork Tenderloin, to the Baileys Chocolate Mousse. We had a wonderful evening.

Waitress was rude and asked, if the food wasn't good enough for us. Then while writing on the comment card asked if we were writing a book? It was a set menu of three main courses and they ran out of sirloin at 7 pm. Apple crisp was not prepared well and apple slices were like chewing on rubber. I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially for 165 dollars for two people. Two things tasted good, the bread and the water, even though the water was warm. Highly disappointed!
