The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Obviously an outdoor meal but never the less absolutely excellent.
Food was exceptional - wow I’ve missed eating like this! Scallops to start were amazing and my husband said his tuna melted in his mouth.
We have eaten at a lot of “fine dining” establishments and the food here was top tier, AND the portions were plentiful! We were both so full by the end of our mains but couldn’t skip on pudding.
We will be back when indoors service resumes too!
Thank you :)
Superb from start to finish, great food attention to detail & amazing flavours. A truly memorable anniversary meal
Great food and drinks.
Lovely service and great to see heaters outside.
Excellent meal, loved the outdoor experience and staff were extremely attentive
We went to the Poet for my daughter’s 21st birthday meal. Although we obviously had to eat outside, they had made the area as warm and appealing as possible. The food and service was impeccable and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anybody. Thank you to The Poet for making my daughter’s 21st memorable.
Great food and service as ever despite the challenging weather!
The only drawback was not enjoying the usual wonderful ambiance of this superb pub/restaurant due to eating outside in a marquee, in high winds. However, even the wind couldn’t spoil our delicious meal and delightful experience.
Food is always good here and new outdoor area really nice. Only downside was that they have started charging for extra gravy with the roast lunch. Wouldn’t mind paying a small supplement but they are charging £6! That’s more than the supplement for the lobster as a starter! Ridiculous.
Food is excellent and reasonably priced. Service extremely good. Would highly recommend this establishment.
Can’t fault it, absolutely amazing all round! Thank you so much.
Myself and my girlfriend came to the Poet for her birthday meal and were so pleased with our evening!
Before we got there, I rang to arrange a birthday cake/surprise for after her meal and they told me that they had seen my note and already organised a Petit Fours plate for her!
The service was professional, fast but super friendly! Especially Pasquale who chatted and told us stories of the pub!
The food was unbelievable- everything was so tasty and perfectly cooked!
10/10 - Highly Recommend
Every dish was truly delicious. Pity we live all the way in London as we’d definitely visit again!
Friendly staff with amazing food and cocktails. Variety in wines and heated patio area, al this made for a lovely and memorable family meal. I highly recommend the poet.
They've done a wonderful job considering COVID restrictions. I can't wait to come back and eat indoors.
We have eaten here on many occasions. This was the first time in eight years for our friends and they were suitably impressed.
We had dinner on Monday for my husband's 60th birthday....ok it was chilly but I took a blanket and the heaters helped a bit. The food was wonderful and the service was excellent. We have never been disappointed with The Poet and will be back again as soon as possible. Thank you.
The food was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. The staff were so kind and attentive and really made our lunch special. Thank you
Food always amazing can’t fault it but as we were sitting outdoors it was freezing, food went cold quickly. Unnecessary to have marquee fully open no shelter from the cold wind at all.
Really good food & friendly staff
The Poet had done a great job of making an outside area which is comfortable and safe. The food and service was really good. We'll be back!
We booked at The Poet for a post lockdown birthday meal for my brother. We had been booked in last year and had to cancel because of Covid 19.
Although we had to eat outside, due to covid restrictions, it was brilliantly set up, marquees, heaters and plenty of space and fresh air.
The staff were amazing and checked that we were ok regularly throughout the experience.
We went for the 3 course Sunday lunch. Staff had no problem explaining the menu to us. The food was sublime. It came out presented beautifully, and hot (which couldn’t have been easy as we were outside and it was windy)!
We will be going back for certain, and I am looking forward to that already!
Amazing meal from start to finish.
Brilliant dinner at the Poet, being outside didn't affect the usual high standards of food, presentation or service. Tables very spaced out and plenty of room. Heaters helped keep you warm towards the end of the evening.
Excellent food, more central London restaurant quality than your average pub fare.
Delicious food and really helpful, lovely staff. Thank you.
Delicious food and wine, london quality in beautiful setting with helpful and friendly staff. Will be back
Service and food was impeccable as always. Always feels like personal service and they seem to remember if you have been in before. Looking forward to being able to sit inside and for the themed nights to start again.
Lovely evening! Food was to a high standard and service was brilliant. The beef was a bit cold when it came out, but chef came out and apologised and gave us a round of drinks free.
Overall, I’d go back!
Fantastic food as always. A little chilly but with the heaters it was fine. I love this place
We all enjoyed the visit. The benches could have had cushions -- seats a bit hard. Everyone enjoyed their meal, mine 'the lamb' had a little too much gristle but otherwise was tasty. Others thought their entire meal was very good. The service was very good. we shall come again which is important.
Being in the garden didn't detract form having the best time. Quality, Taste and presentation hasn't changed during lockdown times. Staff very engaging and polite and efficient. Excellent meal
It was so good to be back at the Poet and to see Andy and his crew. Delicious food as always
Excellent as usual. Brilliant adventurous food. Good service and good value. A bit noisy sitting outside but needs must.. all in all a lovely birthday lunch
Fabulous birthday lunch in the sun. Top quality food and really special treat. Really warm, friendly, attentive but relaxed service. Varied and interesting menu as well as some classics. Can’t wait to return.
Fantastic food as always. Well worth the wait. We’ll be back soon !
We just loved the opportunity to dine out following the deprivation of lockdown.
It was a cold evening but the outside heaters worked hard to keep us warm. However the temperature didn't matter in the least because the food was delicious and the service excellent and, while we can't wait to reacquaint ourselves with the ambiance of the restaurant later in May, we will very happily enjoy the outdoor dining in the meantime.
Congratulations to The Poet!
Wonderful food and service.
Good COVID precautions.
Will definitely return
Lovely food. A little on the expensive side but worth it for our special occasion.
Always great at The Poet. Top notch service and food, plus the outdoor seating worked very well. Only disappointment was no set menu at lunchtime as advertised on the website. Only a la carte.
