The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Excellent lunch at the poet
A warm welcome, delicious food, great service. We have been many times and will continue to do so. Thank you to everyone at the Poet.
Excellent experience again. The food was delicious and the service discreet but attentive. Can't wait to return. Highly recommended.
Excellent service with fabulous food. Great vibes and outstanding presentation, just perfect for birthday celebration.
First visit to a restaurant after lock down this year, wasn’t sure what to expect, no need to worry. Great food, superb value, very attentive and friendly staff.
If you book a table and can’t make it, have the decency to call and cancel, hospitality industry needs our support!!
Lovely Sunday roast, great value for money.
High standard as always, looking forward to my next visit
When you work in the hospitality industry would like to think a warm welcome would be a good start ? Food was ok a bit warm on a bit on the slim side my pork was average at best not enough jus so asked for more ! Received a very small miniature jug and was billed £6.00 plus vat for it ? Really? Not worth the trip and will not be returning.
My daughter was booked here at the same sitting all but on another table as the could not sit us all together? The did not receive any roast potatoes with there roast dinner, toilet was filthy and the floor was soaking wet as was the ladies my wife was not impressed with her visit to the loos!, and this problem has been addressed in reviews prior, again a simple fix you need a plumber? Try and find a polite Plumber he could greet your customers and fix your toilet? What a treat if he could knock up a couple a gallons of jus ? You could sell it on and that would solve any financial issues you may have.
Lovely Sunday lunch. Food was delicious and service great too. Cant fault the Poet. Starters were super tasty and elaborste. The roast itselfs and the trimming absolutely perfect.
One thing we would definitely change and we were a bit disappointed about it is that if you wish to have a little extra gravy/just with your roast they now charge £6.
Delicious food. I’m vegan and the menu don’t have anything I could eat, I gave them notice and the chef prepared me the most delicious two course meal. My very frail 85 year old Dad loved the food, service and attention to detail from the moment we arrived. Top notch. Thanks !
The food was excellent, then room quiet for conversation, the whole ambiance peaceful. The wine suggestions were also good.
A wonderful meal out. The staff were excellent and the food amazing. Well worth a visit.
Lovely little find, excellent food and very good service.
A great dining experience.
Three main courses were wonderful, but the meat in the lamb burger was very dry and unappetising.
The chocolate dessert was too rich.
If one is seated for 2hrs then the seats should be comfortable. I was told they’d refurbed during lockdown. Well sitting in those seats does dampen the pleasing experience.
Good value for money and friendly knowledgeable staff.
Good location and ambience. Varied and interesting menu for all tastes.
Food beautifully cooked and served. No "cons". All in all, great value.
A birthday dinner and it was just right. The food was fabulous as always, cooked to perfection. The staff are excellent; perfectly attentive and pleasant, either happy to leave you alone or chat, depending on where you are in your meal. The drink menu is splendid, with knowledgeable recommendations if you get stuck and the cost is exactly what you think it should be. Not cheap, but excellent value for money for a really lovely evening out. We're so lucky to have this wonderful restaurant just round the corner.
food and service excellent as always but prices a little on the high side
Always good food at The Poet although the menu choices were limited this time and very expensive for lunchtime. Especially given the bijou portions. We missed the prix fixe option that was always a good way to try dishes in the past. Staff friendly and helpful.
Second time of visiting The Poet and we were as impressed as the first time. Small menu but everything was exquisite. Price tag quite high £125 for lunch for 2, including drinks, but given the quality of the food and service, happy to pay this.
Staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, without being intrusive. All were happy to be open again and serving customers.
Felt very Covid safe.
Can't wait to go back!
Incredible food and incredible service can’t wait to go back!
We had a birthday lunch for four of us and it was excellent, simply delicious food and nice staff.
Lovely service and food to die for!!!!
I wish the Poet every success as we wish to continue enjoying it!!
Superb food, wine and overall experience. Highly recommended !
We went to one of our favourite places to eat for my partner’s birthday and the food was incredible. Service was excellent too. It made a lovely birthday treat and reminded us why it’s one of our favourites!
The Poet is such a gem. Exceptionally delicious and unique food. Service was perfect. We’ve been lucky enough to have eaten at numerous top restaurants (both in London and Kent) in the last couple of weeks due to a series of birthdays and special occasions and The Poet has been the best.
Amazing food and service! Would highly recommend if you haven't been. We will be back again very soon. My wife and I and our two young daughters had a lovely Sunday afternoon meal there.
Lovely food, lovely staff lovely place
They followed all safety rules. All staff make you feel very welcome. Very attentive. Food outstanding.
Everything was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The food was spectacular, the staff very accommodating and nice. 10/10
Excellent service and exceptional food.
It was a pleasure to eat there.
Excellent food, service & drinks. Highly recommended. For an establishment so good though, the outside area could do with a bit more love. Inside is beautiful though.
Outstanding as usual. Magnificent food, drinks and service . We just feel so at ease at the Poet; thanks to Andy and the team, as ever.
Great food and great service.
Wonderful attention to detail.
Excellent food - tuna tataki and then halibut fillet. Attentive service, and a pretty little pub. A lovely treat.
Perfect for a business lunch, superb food, good atmosphere to speak and top level service
Fabulous food, perfect size portions, great atmosphere
Absolutely stunning food, service and ambience. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Amazing food, one of the very best restaurants in the area. Lovely, friendly knowledgeable waiting staff,
Been three times now and although not the cheapest of places the food is outstanding and served by a very friendly staff. We shall be going again
Not quiet the experience I had expected. However the food was pleasant.
