Here’s the thing - the food and service were outstanding. But honestly, the overall experience was very underwhelming. It’s almost as if they were catering to the exact things to maintain their Michelin Star and have lost their way on what makes a restaurant truly great. Granted, it could just be slow adoption to my generation vs the clientele in Saratoga.
We just moved to the bay from Austin - where Michelin doesn’t currently rate restaurants. Austin isn’t even considered the best food market in Texas either. However, there are restaurants there which absolutely nail the food, service, and overall experience for half the cost. You’d have to absolutely blow it out there with drinks, apps, entrees and desserts to sniff the bill I had last night.
If you go to plumed horse the food will be delicious and your water glass will always be full. Maybe it’s just me, or Michelin stars are overrated.
I guess take this with a big grain of salt in that I haven’t actually enjoyed many of the Michelin rated restaurants in the area. While I can appreciate the effort and talent that goes into creating these dishes, I guess I’m just not refined enough to taste the value as it were. The portions were tiny, the pheasant was dry (never had it before so I don’t know if it’s just a dry bird generally??). The crab soufflé was excellent, I must say, but $25 excellent I’m not sure. Even if the price was half of what it was, I’d probably still walk away feeling meh about the overall dinner... excepting the soufflé.
Maybe I’m just too simple to appreciate high-end fine dining.

Enjoyed most aspects of the meal very much. Can’t help but think that another star is in easy reach. Please note we did not have the tasting menu but did enjoy three courses with champagne to start and a bottle of wine. I would rate outstanding across the board but for some small issues at the start of service with our waiter who seemed non-plussed that we were not ordering the tasting menu and then couldn’t produce a wine list immediately. Food, drinks, all other aspects of service were excellent except our interactions with him which were just “off”. If the sommelier had appeared with the wine list and not after we had already chosen a bottle we would have been an easy up-sell. I was unfamiliar with many of the selections but curious.
The food was excellent. No qualms with the kitchen. The wagu beef was nicely accompanied and I was satisfied. I thought the salmon could have used something else on the plate but my wife seemed completely satisfied. Apps and deserts were excellent with the soufflés being outstanding (and I’m sure soufflés normally get rated highly, but these really were a notch above). By the end of the meal we were stuffed.
My only other observation was the undulating lighting in the main dining room which occasionally interferes with the dining experience when when the three fixtures drop into phase and the room turns to red or white or green. Sorry, next time I shall ask to be seated elsewhere if it is allowed (I noticed other rooms but wasn’t sure if they were for private events or general dining.) I can’t help but feel that is a mistake, along with the 70’s hits being piped in.
In summary, where it counts, it is already a two star restaurant. There are a few things I would change to make the experience just slightly more pleasant. Cheers.
Normally food and service is great here but service was terrible on this day (Valentines Day). Normally when you walk into restaurant they would ask you for a coat check but they didn’t so we had to go request it. Also normally they lead you into lounge area while you wait for your seating but again we had to walk in ourselves and find a seat. After we were seated at our table it took a while for someone to approach us. Once we ordered we waited a while before any bread was brought out to the table. Table around us was getting bread so we had to ask if we could have some also. This is something we never had to do before and wouldn’t expect to have to do it at a place like this. Normally while you wait for your food they give you a chefs appetizer but our table did not get it while table next to us did. For dinner we also added the caviar but never received it. Also was never asked if wanted a glass of wine during dinner as they usually do. In summary the food was good but service was terrible on this special night. Have been here several times and was one of my favorite places in saratoga but was really disappointed in this night.
Food was well presented but not tasty. Wine and service were great.
Superb experience that should be in everybody's "Bucket List"
What an amazing experience! My husband and I have been to a lot of Michelin Star restaurants, James Beard etc and this is one of our favorite meals. We were very surprised as we were not expecting such a spectacular meal and amazing wine. Worth every penny.
Service was impeccable. The food was very good. It was also very expensive. I would highly recommend for a special occasion and to try the Chef’s tasting menu.
After my second experience here, I truly believe this place was a waste of time and money.
Let me name several things that I find unbecoming of a Michelin Star restaurant:
1. The hostess walked us to our table so fast she left my husband and I trailing behind. I don’t believe we need to chase her.
2. As soon as we sat down, a team of three waiters hovered over us. One showing us the the menu that we haven’t gotten a chance to open. The second asking us what kind of water we preferred. The third asking if we wanted any starter wine or champagne from the cart he pushed to our table. Our heads were spinning. We didn’t get a chance to settle in.
3. We were pushed for the tasting menu and the wine pairing. We decided against it. The waiter again started to pushed us towards the tasting menu. We politely declined. Throughout, dinner he kept coming over to check on us, which was great. Except, he would just stand by our table watching us until we asked him if we can be of any help. When he should have shown up to our table he failed to do so. Our table was cleared since we finished our meals. We sat for about 10mins waiting for him to bring us the dessert menus. He walked by twice and finally we had to asked him for them.
4. The food was mediocre at best. The wagyu beef I ordered was below standard. It was chewy, lacked the marbleizations of a high quality wagyu. The veal my husband had can be past for pork bought from Costco. The bread were cold. The little dishes brought while waited for the main dish’s lacked in taste and presentation.
5. The ambience was like a cheap Vegas lounge with disco music. The music was loud and unfit for the type of food being served. The decor plain and cheaply thrown together. There big mirrors on the wall instead of something artsy. The coloring changing chandlers is a bit elementary.
What happen the Michelin Star standard? It’s just shameful.
This is the 4th time we've eaten at the Plumed Horse, and it seems to be sliding each time. To sum, the cuisine was one dimensional, heavily over seasoned, (salt,) and lacked distinction. Texture and flavors shared a common denominator in many of the courses - soft and salty. Although the salmon was fantastic, the pheasant was overcooked and tough to chew. The desert was a piping of ricotta cheese with little flavor or imagination. Everything seemed to need a squeeze of lemon to bring alive!
Service was good, although the food servers were rushed and spent little time explaining the dishes dropping on what seemed a fly-by. Very sloppy. Also, many of waitresses had very long, claw like manicures - a no-no in food service. This said, the bar staff and head waiter were attentive and very personable, and the wine and drink suggestions were fantastic.
With these dishes and the service, I am very surprised that the Plumed Horse remains a 1-star rated restaurant. Next time, we'll stay in the bar.

We love to eat at the bar at the Plumed Horse. Every few years we have some motivation to try the dining room. It's been a few years, yet our experience was basically the same. The service is very formal, but somehow disconnected. The service team perform a very set piece role, but there doesn't seem to be the engagement that makes great suervice. Two issues stand out: my wife and I ordered wildly different main courses that couldn't fit with a common bottle of wine. So, we were prepared for the by the glass list. Our server suggested that they could do the wines from the pairing with the chef's tasting menu, which was very welcome. However, when our starters hit the table and were delicious, but there was no wine to be seen, nor anyone to ask. Ten minutes later we finally saw our server and asked about the wine. He quickly scurried and got our wine which paired nicely with our last couple of bites of our starters. Hooters manages to train their staff that within 2 minutes after food hitting the table there is a followup to check that all is right. Perhaps the Plumed Horse could implement such training.
Our mains were mostly excellent, except for an odd miss with a mushy, and greatly under-salted, risotto. A request for salt was cheerfully accepted by our server, but neither he, nor the salt was to be seen for the next 20 minutes.
But the staff do wear nice ties and are definitely formally correct, if not all that effective.
The Plumed Horse is highly recommended to eat at the bar. We didn't see anything in the overall experience that justified the $400 price tag for two (and we are very willing to, and often achieve such tabs, and feel like we got good value).
But, we will be eating at the bar quite happily.
This restaurant used to be one of my favorites, however, this time too many mistakes. They were nice however, I was expecting a more attentive service. The food was good but not as delicious as it was used to be. The restaurant was crowded more than usual, which at first I assumed the food should have been improved but not really. Another thing I didn't like they were trying to force us to take the tasting menu, I am so happy we didn't take it.
Just a phenomenal experience. Great service and wonderful food. The chocolate cart was a welcome surprise.
restaurant is expensive. you get what you pay for. very good experience. its a place to go to only on special occasions once a year thing.
Not bad, but I think for the value, it's not really worth it. There are places with better food and better value.
Very special evening for the tasting menu, matched wines, impeccable service and more. We now live 50 miles away, but the drive is worth it! We added a caviar starter to the tasting menu. I am not a fan of beets or antelope, but both dishes were outstanding. Portions are perfect- we did not feel overwhelmed by the end of the meal. The decor with the beautiful Chihuly-like chandeliers and floor to ceiling wine room add an artistic ambiance. And we so appreciated that even with a full restaurant seating, we could still hear each other!
Phenomenally crafted tasting menu options for Omni, Pesc, and Vegetarian diets. Not to mention impeccable service and ambiance. Worth every moment.
The dining experience was simply spectacular from start to finish. Ambiance, wait staff, som, the champagne cart (!), menu, wine list, food preparation & presentation were all comfortably stunning. This is a very highly impressive restaurant!
Great restraunt, food, service & ambiance is excellent. Black pepper soufflé is a must. Great for a special occasion.
The experience was great. We had a tasting menu and all the items were presented ver well and tasted delicious. Service was gruas well.
Great food, slow but kind service.
I wouldn’t recommend the A5 steak, Ive had much better elsewhere although they do give you a generous portion. The Maine Lobster with truffle risotto was well worth it, as was the soufflé with crab fondue appetizer.
Mismatched food. Can you believe a combination of marble Wagyu beef with tempura? No salad or otherwise vegetable is served. The service was terrible. No value for the money!
Loved the black truffles on lobster. The wagyu beef was also nice. Desserts were fun but didn’t satiate my sweet tooth. Was hoping for a cheese plate but they didn’t offer that. Ambiance was great. Love the large room of wines. Service was pretty good. A little pricy for but overall I would recommend. I wanted to hang out in the bar area next to the fire. Will be back to do that.
We enjoyed our time at Plumed Horse. The food was outstanding , as it is a Michelin starred restauarant. I had the Texas antelope and it was cooked perfectly, along with their signature dish of Parmesan cheese soufflé with a Dungeness crab bisque. Since it was my birthday, they offered a glass of champagne on the house and petit fours for extra dessert also. The only downside was the waiter offered us small salad which he made it seem as if it was part of our entrée and when we got the bill, we thought it was rather deceiving that we were charged for the salad at a cost of $22 each for a salad of small wedge of cheese and greens that came out of a box. Otherwise, we enjoyed everything else.
If you want to impress your date (i.e. looks and appearance), it is a winner. However as for food and price, it is not a winner.
Not sure if it was because it was Christmas, but the food wasn’t that good, meat ok, fish dry and dessert was ok. The real disappointment was the service. Server came took our order and only came back to ask if we wanted the check. Asked for hot water, never got it. Asked for coffee, 15 min later, finally had to ask again. Very basic items. We came in pretty early, so it wasn’t because they were busy. Not sure if we will go back.
Meh. Didn’t make our special occasion special. Of all the Michelin stars in the Bay Area this one is on the low end. And if you want a coffee drink after dinner, there is no latte, cappuccino or espresso - only regular IHOP-style coffee. Mediocre meal, was expecting a lot more for the money.
And wow, going back and reading other reviews now, I guess they really dropped the ball this Christmas Eve / Day with that preset menu and subpar service - epic Christmas fail! Somebody please tell me that they are much better on a regular day!!
Not our first time to the Plumed Horse and we have always had a great evening. However this time being Xmas eve they had a preset menu which I might have missed when I booked. I had put the dietary restrictions in the booking but this was totally missed. We started with champagne and a bottle of the Paul Hobbs from the wine list which was excellent and paired well with our first course and soup. We tried the different mains around the table and the Venison was outstanding. The steak was tough and not something you experience with good filet. I had to request a steak knife and even so found it difficult to cut. We had 2 Fish meals, one being perfect and the other overcooked and brought it to the attention of our server. He immediately asked the kitchen for another, which didn't arrive till we were almost done with our main course at the table. Unfortunately the second time it was also overcooked but not as bad as the first and our server now was embarrassed and profusely apologetic - the choice now being rushing to eat an overcooked dish versus no food since the other guests had finished their meal. Our server did bring us a round of port for the table but unfortunately 2 out of the 3 glasses had excessive amounts of sediment. We enjoyed the restaurant ambiance. We always make the most of an evening out with a lot of laughter and this evening was no different for us. Surprisingly there was no apology or talk of adjusting the bill for the fish which I did find rather surprising, but they did present us with a bottle of their house Sauvignon Blanc as we were leaving.
May be it was Christmas Eve and they may not have had the regular staff. It was embarrassingly bad experience hosting guests at Plumed Horse. Hopefully they do not take reservations when they are not prepared to provide service for the money people spend.
Plumed Horse does it again! Absolutely wonderful food, wine and ambience. The service was impeccable. A flawless evening.

We were here for our anniversary but I guess the host forgot to tell our sever, and perhaps our server forgot to ask? Maybe they mis-looked our reservation. Nonetheless, we told our server at the end and he comped is a bottle of plumed horse wine, which is such a nice gesture! Totally made up for our loss. We were a little sad but we were pleased by the exceptional service. We really enjoyed our night. Thank you
Food was consistently overly salted. French food should be a symphony of flavors. Instead the meal was about as complex as a plate of french fries. Course after course (tasting menu) we were struck by how it paled in comparison to similar meals at Le Papillion
