About The Plough and the Stars
At the Plough & the Stars the owners are determined to bring the true taste of Ireland to Philadelphia, our food is described as Western European with a strong Irish influence. We were awarded by Citysearch as Philadelphia's Best Brunch. We have been featured numerous times on the Food Network and have cooked at the James Beard House in New York. Enjoy our famous Mussells Veloute, Striped Bass with Potato Crusted Scales or Guinness Casserole. Or if you prefer you can dine on our casual bar fare. We have installed the most sophisticated beer system in the US, imported directly from Ireland and installed by Guinness technicians. Each pint of the 12 beers on tap is perfect. The atmosphere created by the simple, yet powerful decor and fills a visitor to the Plough & the Stars, with an overwhelming feeling of awe and inspiration. Our waiter was really great, I am only placing this review because we had a really uncomfortable experience with the other wait staff and bussers. We were eating and felt very rushed by people constantly asking us to take our plates, I started to count and got to about 7 different occasions that this happened. Sometimes it was rather aggressive as well, off of plates we were still eating off of. Normally this wouldn't bother me but it was clear they were trying to just flip the table and the restaurant was empty, they weren't anywhere near closing time. We sat at the table for max 45 minutes. On top of this, one of my friends tripped getting up from the table, and accidentally broke her glass. We offered to help clean it up, and on the way to the bathroom we heard several waitresses (that were not our waiter who again was excellent) saying we should pay for the glass. We also heard them say they were going to purposely leave it there because they didn't want to have to clean it up, so we sat with glass on our table for a few minutes before our waiter (again great) finally came and helped us. I worked in a restaurant, it happens all the time by everyone, it was clearly an accident, and loudly making fun of your patrons isn't a great way to keep tables in an already empty restaurant. This place was just too aggressive and mean spirited to ever recommend a nice dining experience to anyone.
Had dinner here with my wife and two friends and were very pleased with the atmosphere, food and service. Our waitperson was fantastic, our meals were outstanding and the place felt more like a local pub than a city restaurant. We will definitely be returning for another dinner sometime in the future.
Everything about our three course Restaurant Week meal was outstanding. The duck appetizer was moist and flavorful. The greens and vegetables were fresh and cooked just right for peak flavor. The rack of lamb and filet mignon were perfect with delicious sauces. Finally the dessert of a mini creme brûlée with a chocolate mousse truffle was heaven. We’ll be back!
Met my brother for lunch, his plane arrived early & they welcomed him more than 1/2 hour before official opening, gave him a cup of coffee and some conversation while he waited for me. The service was excellent, the food superb. My only quibble was the soccer match at high volume, but even that - they let us check out 3 tables to find the quietest corner for our family visit. I couldn’t be happier.
Went to The Plough and the Stars hoping for a more intimate dinner to celebrate a special occasion with my boyfriend. It should be noted that it was restaurant week, and the seating for dinner is a smaller section on a second level overlooking the bar area. As it turns out, there was a large party who had booked the entire downstairs/bar for an event, and they were incredibly loud. While this would have been okay, I wish that when the reservation was made and confirmed, there was some notice that this would have been going on, given the restaurant set-up. Conversation was impossible-- every other sentence we had to repeat ourselves, and if we'd wanted to scream at each other we would have picked a bar. Most of the food was delicious, but perhaps the kitchen was busy with the party because when the entree came out, the meal was hot but the side of broccoli seemed to be cold on the inside (reminiscent of when you don't microwave frozen veggies for long enough). Besides taking our order and delivering our food, the server was hard to be found (the party was busy, but I could see her and other coworkers hanging out in the server's area)-- normally would be okay because I don't like to be checked in on too frequently, but the meat was a little too rare for me and it was very difficult to find anyone to tell. Once we did, however, they cooked it a little more and the person who brought it out (not sure if chef or GM) was very helpful.
Overall, I was disappointed with the experience but am willing to chalk it up to the busy party downstairs. I really enjoyed the mussels and sweet soda bread and highly recommend those if you're dining here.. but given my other experiences throughout restaurant week have been extraordinary, I don't know that I would recommend this place (especially not at the normal price point). Might be willing to come back for the bar though!
It was a cold winter night and the venue was perfect with the fire roaring in the late 19th or early 20th century wood burning fireplace. My husband was very happy with the lamb chops. My pork tenderloin was bursting with flavor. I was disappointed however when my glass of wine arrived in an obviously dirty glass. The waiter promptly brought me a new glass. If not for this, I would have given a higher overall rating.
Enjoyed Sunday Brunch while watching the Eagles game. Had good seat to watch the TV, food was wonderful (and nice variety) and had a very attentive server. We gave a larger tip for the amount of time we spent at the table as well as her attentiveness and she checked with us that it wasn't a mistake. Whole atmosphere was comfortable and I'd come back in a minute.,
A casual Christmas dinner with my husband and our 18 & 20 year olds before the Eagles game. So glad I picked Plough & Stars! Festive atmosphere with a toasty fire. We Could see the games from every seat. The food was amazing!! My husband and son loved the Guinness Stew. The seafood chowder and potato leek soups were excellent. We’ll definitely be back.
Food was great and the servers were pleasant. However, service was very slow. We allowed 2 hours for dinner but it Took a long while to ask for someone to take order. Also a long wait for entrees.We didn't have time for dessert which was disappointing. We had to rush dinner. Food was great though.
The food is excellent as is the service. However the noise level is so high it was impossible aa party of 4 tti talk to the person next to me, let alone across the table.. we actually wrote notes. The 3 people at table next to us gave up and just used their cellphones... never said a word to each other, which e talked about when we were both leaving. The louder the crowd got, the louder the music got, rigorously tee base. This was our third time... different days, different seating. Too bad because food is grest.
We enjoy the casual atmosphere and good food at Plough especially when we head to old city for a movie at the ritz....it’s just an easy evening. Had a little trouble getting a dirty martini this visit to actually taste like a dirty martini should, but enjoyed the food. I had a salad and a crab cake appetizer which was excellent, and my husband had a vegetable pasta dish. We shared mussels to start and they were fabulous though I wondered how much butter may have been used in the broth .... enjoyed everything though.
We went to try this place out for Restuaurant week in Philly, the food was really good, potatoes were a little salty for my taste but everything else was great! Service was really good. Our server Shane was awesome very engaging but not overally so. we will go back!
