About The People’s Kitchen & Citizen Wine Bar
Since inception, The Citizen has been the spot to enjoy wine, cheese and chocolate and to celebrate these perfect pairings without the price tag and fuss that often accompanies them. As our physical space expanded, allowing for a formal dining room known as The People’s Kitchen, we further developed our menu to apply our expertise and craftsmanship to artisanal products, whether purchased or prepared in-house. Dry-aged steaks, house-butchered charcuterie, burgers, sandwiches, comfort dishes and wholesome monthly entrées are all prepared honestly and offer a sense of place and depth of flavor. The Citizen is open everyday, while our formal dining room is available only Wednesday through Saturday, and our world-class cocktail bar Still & Stir is open on Friday and Saturday. Outdoor Patio seating is available and heated and covered during colder months. PLEASE let us know where you would like to sit when you make your reservation in the "Special Request" box. Thank You.

The People’s Kitchen & Citizen Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Seated promptly. Gina, our server, described & explained the menu clearly. We went with the prix fix option as that was what the GROUPON provided. For 2-people, the $84 cost was reduced to $59. My Korean 3-rib appetizer was fatty with little meat; my spouse's Red lentil soup was tasty but thin. The Lamb-shank entree with chick-peas & lentils lacked depth & included was also fatty with little meat or substance.; my spouse's Salmon entre' with rice was prepared as requested. The warm-brownie dessert with vanilla ice cream & my coconut mousse were adequate. Tha $17 charge for the additional wine parring with each course was reasonable. Although only 4-couples in the restaraunt, service seemed rushed. Overall , the worst meal we've experienced in a Niche-group locationo.
This is a great spot for Mechanics Hall performances, as the symphony is just around the corner. And in decent weather, The Hanover Theater is also within a close walk. We dined upstairs and think the ambiance is very pleasant, and have dined here several times. The Artisan Cheese and Charcuterie is always very good, a great combination of savory and sweet, with interesting cheeses to choose from. The Sweet Potato Turnover was very good, boasting a Mediterranean flair and delicious sauce. The beet salad was fairly good, but the Vietnamese Spare Ribs were very, very tough. Overall, it's one of the better choices in the area, but they need to up their game to get a 5 star review.
Menu changes monthly and we were there the first night of the new menu. Cheese plate was great, wine flight was a good deal, cocktails were better than expected. My partner's salmon was awesome but my noodles were really salty and didn't come with everything listed. Maybe they were just working out kinks in the new menu.
Our server Katie was great, we went late on a weeknight and had almost nobody there.
Overall, would recommend.
There was nothing really wrong with our experience, but very little stood out as exceptional either. The waitstaff (both at the wine bar and in the restaurant) were good, but it took us a long time to get our meals. The food was fine (steak for me, chicken for my wife) but not at all special, and for the money we spent ($150 on the night) we expected a little more 'wow'. It was nice to have the valet parking, but we stood for quite a while on the cold sidewalk waiting for our car to be brought to us, and that was after the waitstaff alerted the valet service ahead of time that we were coming down.
For a wine bar, the wine list is poor. Not much to choose from. We had the Kofte as an appetizer which was excellent. I had the lobster carbonarra which was overpowered by the salty pancetta. Another person had the tenderloin which he enjoyed very much. The service was good.
Food was excellent. Service was a little lacking in attentiveness but she more than made up for it with a killer wine recommendation. Wine presentation was classy and knowledgeable. Add to this complimentary valet parking and being met at the door by friendly (not to mention funny) staff and it was a lovely date with the wife.
This is the second time I've eaten at The People's Kitchen over the last six weeks, and both times the food has been over-salted by the kitchen. Over the years I've been going here, I find the quality of the kitchen has gone down. Too bad, because I used to love this place.
I haven't been to this restaurant since it first opened. A few of my friends rave about it so when I was in town, we went. The server, a male, was fine, until we gave him a Groupon and then his disposition completely changed. We were sure to tip on the full amount, pre-Groupon total, and he didn't even acknowledge that so I'm not sure what his problem was. If your business frowns upon or looks down upon people using the Groupon, then maybe it shouldn't be offered. I was made to feel very uncomfortable. Also, the drinks and food were ok, my salmon was very salty and I could only eat parts of it. I will probably, at some point, be back as it is a good meeting spot.
this was our first time. We sat at the bar to wait for our additional guest and immediately struck up conversation with the bartenders. they were very informative on the history of the restaurant and the area. They were helpful with drink suggestions, in fact genuinely so - with a nod to making whatever we would like.
We sat downstairs and ironically, had one of the same pleasant bartenders as our waiter - Tom. I had mentioned I heard that the cheese plates were good. Not knowing where to start, he offered to put one together for us - it was perfect. Service and meals were quite good - lots of flavor.
Overall, a disappointing night. We ordered drinks and a cheese plate at the bar downstairs while we waited for our table upstairs. After 30 minutes, the cheese plate hadn't arrived. We asked the bartender about it, and he explained that there had been a mix up in the kitchen and it would be out shortly. After another 15 minutes, our table was ready, but still no cheese plate. The bartender told us he would send it up to our table. It never arrived. Despite asking for a quiet and intimate table, we were seated next to the wait staff prep area. We asked for a different table and was seated just another table away from the prep area. Although there were other more romantic areas upstairs, the lighting was very bright in the room that we were seated in. Further, the music was a terrible mix that included the Pet Shop Boys techno, Michael Jackson's Beat It, and the Eagles' Witchy Woman. The atmosphere was definitely not intimate or even sophisticated. Our server was pleasant and prompt and the food was decent; however, for the price, it should have been more impressive. We dined here two years ago with friends, but it seems to have gone steeply downhill in the meantime.
My wife and I have been to TPK/CWB a few times in the past and have enjoyed the food and service so it was one of a couple of suggestions we offered when making plans to meet friends out for dinner (the other being Tommasso's in Southborough). Our friends had heard of Citizen's and had been wanting to try it.
Service was excellent, the food was delicious and the drink selection was quite satisfying for all tastes.
From the charcuterie to salads and entrees, everything was well prepared and presented.
Our friends were quite happy with their first visit and I'm sure they will be back in the future, just as we will.
Very disappointed in our experience all around including service and food! We have been here several times before and enjoyed our experience very much but I do hesitate to go back. I think I will try one more time but if service and quality of food are the same as this last experience I will not be back. It is too bad because I thought this place was great before.
We always liked going to People's Kitchen and have been there many times - always happy. This time we went on a snowy, cold Sunday night. Kitchen must have been half closed. Food was not quite as good as usual. We give them the benefit of the doubt as weather was awful and no one was on the streets.
Service was good though - professional and quick.
This was our third annual New Years reservation with you.
We had reservation for 7PM; table was not ready until 7:15PM. Drinks at the bar were overpriced. WAY OVERPRICED.
OK, so next time we won't order any drinks.
The second course: Potato Leek Soup was advertised as Oysters + Parsnips. So we did expect
more than one oyster; and more than one sliver of parsnip. Not happy. My wife could not swallow the soup.
The entrée was excellent; but ; was served without any cutlery; and the wine pairing did not arrive until half-way through the serving. That really spoiled the whole idea of wine pairing;
don't you think?
I had to take cutlery off an adjacent table so we could eat before the food was cold.
The head waitress was not amused, that I took the silverware.
Desert was excellent.
The waitress was nice; but I should not have left a 20% tip.
We will not return for New Years next year.
We loved everything about this place-from the greeting we got upon arriving to the service as well as the ability to make changes based on how we eat. Definitely will be coming here again! All the courses were delicious!! Thank toy for making our New Year's Eve perfect!!
Went there for the 1st time on New Years before a show. Granted, probably not the best night for a review.
I would say the service and food were good; the ambience...meh.
The bar looked nice, I wish we ate there. If you go, specify where you want to sit; booth...quiet table etc etc.
