About The Pelican Club

The Pelican Club, offering a wide range of fabulous New Orleans dishes, consists of three dining rooms and a large bar fashioned from a handsome, 19th-century French Quarter townhouse, rising from the corner of Bienville Street and Exchange Place in the heart of the French Quarter. Owner, Richard Hughes, and his wife, Jean Stinnett-Hughes, transformed a neglected architectural gem into a welcoming restaurant decorated in a crisp blend of traditional and contemporary. Each room has its own ambiance, created with such diverse elements as burnished Louisiana cypress, contemporary paintings by New Orleans artists, antique prints, and the dramatic contrast of black-leather banquettes against cream-colored brick walls. Such an atmosphere is sure to make your meal feel like a truly New Orleans experience.

The food here was delicious. The bartender claimed the bread was the best in the City. (I can’t officially confirm that, but it was good, the oil was not) we did the four course meal, which was delicious and provided a nice variety of their samplings. (And we both ordered different things each course to share) For as good as the food was, the service was bad though. Our waitress at one point forgot about us and the bartender took over, which saved us from walking out. (We were that close) After the first course came, she cleared it out, but because of the disappearing act, took all our things and when the main course arrived, we had to ask the bar staff again for silverware so we could eat. She was better after that, but flustered, and by the time the check came we had been there for just over 2 hours. Not a terrible thing, but I was ready to go at about 1.5 hours. I will note we are not southerners and I have heard that slow service is sort of a thing here, so this could be a cultural misunderstanding as well.

This was our second time to the Pelican Club and it did not disappoint us. Our server was outstanding. So helpful, friendly and attentive. The barbecued shrimp were to die for and the beautiful rack of lamb cooked to perfection with a delicious sauce.

Our experience at the Pelican Club was very disappointing. Had better food at chain restaurants. Service and food was nowhere near what you would expect for the price. Celebrating anniversary and it wasn't even mentioned. If you are a local and are used to fine dining - don't waste your time !! Not sure if it's acceptable for tourist!!

Fantastic service and food. We had the rack of lamb which was super tender and seasoned perfectly! The jumbo lump crab topped drum was light and flaky.
We have never been disappointed at the Pelican Club!

Everything was wonderful. Will come back. When leaving, I missed two steps at the exit and sprained my foot. Please light the steps or otherwise mark them. Could be a broken ankle hazard. Next time, I’ll know.

We went here for our anniversary, we we're ten minutes late because of traffic but they still had a great table for us. The food was fantastic. I cannot say one negative thing about this restaurant, other than I have lived here for seven years and I wish we had found it sooner!

A real New Orleans food experience. We were very pleasantly surprised that the restaurant has maintained its long time reputation for a very memorable dinning experience. The service is very professional enhanced by a wide variety of creative menu selections. The chef always has something new on the menu plus some long time favorites. A bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with this area of the French Quarter but definitely worth the effort.

We were sat promptly, and slightly early for a reservation on a very busy night (Christmas Eve)! Kaira -forgive me if that's not spelled quite right- gave us excellent, friendly, communicative service. She was assisted by Will, but definitely handled almost all of our table's needs on her own.

Revillion dinner is one of my favorite New Orleans traditions and I can't wait to bring back more family and loved ones' another year, and for other special occasions. The rabbit and grits were absolutely divine, and I loved their brandy and vanilla creme brûlée. As a wine nerd, I love that their relationship with Duckhorn puts a bottle of Paraduxx at under $60. Yum. Pelican Club is one of my favorite dining destinations in the city.

Nice Christmas Eve dinner in the French Quarter. Ordered the Cioppino which was delicious but while serving, our female server accidentally splashed some of the red sauce onto me. Most hit my lap which was covered with a napkin & luckily missed my new white cashmere sweater. I backed away to clean self off & never even got an apology for the incident. Next, as we had tasted many a NOLA treat throughout the day, we asked for our salad to be split for sharing so as not to ruin our appetite for main course. It was brought out in large bowl, had to request a dish for sharing & had to divide it up ourselves. This was a male server, as they work together as a team. I guess special requests are an annoyance. All in all, the food was delicious, atmosphere lovely but the wait staff could use a review course in customer satisfaction.

Great food and outstanding service! We thought that this restaurant was a private club but were pleasantly surprised to learn that it was not and we could make a reservation. The food was delicious, especially the lobster entree and the fresh fish entree. It was not our favorite turtle soup as it was a lil too thick but the oyster and mirliton soup was good.

The food was fresh, inventive, well-prepared. We especially enjoyed the scallops with artichoke leaves, the whole flounder, and the mirliton and oyster soup. This is the third time we had a reveillon menu at the Pelican Club and it is always outstanding. We have promised ourselves that we'll go back on a regular day- not just for the Christmas special.

Overall our experience was very acceptable. We had an issue with the filet- sent it back twice. It was just a tough cut of meat and not the server’s fault. The whole, fried redfish was amazing, as were the scallops and artichokes. My favorite is always dessert and the creme brûlée did not disappoint!

My friend and I had a spectacular time. We went for the Revillion and got a wonderful meal. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Had a drink mix up that was corrected promptly. It's a shame that the restaurant opens at 5:30 PM. It would be a nice place for a quiet lunch. We plan to go again.

Excellent! The food, the drinks, the service - all excellent!

Have not been there since the mid-90s because I choose to not go downtown anymore, but glad we tried the Pelican Club again. Its back in my restaurant rotation.

We tried the Reveillon Dinner option, and happy we did. Dinner included 4 courses, and the portions were more than ample. Food and bar service were top notch and professional.

We had an early reservation, at 6:30, and the restaurant was crowded, but I never felt rushed, and we enjoyed a 2+ hour dinner.

Happy we tried it again, and looking forward to a return trip.

The web site for the restaurant looks inviting, but unfortunately on this particular Friday evening the restaurant itself was not.

I made a reservation for one with OpenTable but when I arrived the greeter tried to convince me to eat at the bar instead. Not the best of starts. Parties of one are still guests, after all.

My server was nice, and managed to hit the sweet spot between paying attention and giving me space to enjoy my meal. All the dishes were presented in a way you would expect of a high-end restaurant. Good marks for service.

The ”signature” oyster chowder didn’t live up to the advertisement. It was fine, but nothing out of the ordinary.

The Louisiana Cioppino did manage to impress. The sauce and pasta were presented separately, a nice touch. The tomato basil sauce was simple, but nicely done. What impressed me most was the seafood that was included with the sauce. All the individual components - especially the scallops - were done to perfection. The kitchen was firing on all cylinders when they put this dish together.

The Diseno Old Vine Malbec was very nice. Perhaps not the first paring you would choose given the other wines they have by the glass, but it worked well for me.

The biggest drawback on this evening was that the main dining room was really noisy. My reservation was early - I arrived at 18:00 - and even when only 1/4 full the sound level was towards the upper end of comfortable. A large party of Christmas revelers arrived about the same time as my main course, at which point the sound level went up to something of which AC/DC would be proud. Ambient noise levels in restaurants vary a lot from day to day, and maybe I just was unlucky. I recommend asking for a table outside the main dining room should you reserve a table there.

I have only this one experience on which to judge, but using this single data point I wouldn’t put the Pelican Club on my ”must visit” list of restaurants.
