Lovely ambience - but over priced for what you get
The waiter we had was not observant nor attentive to detail. We had to ask for water refill but he was more than happy to take our Gift voucher (& pocket the difference). Went once .. the setting was superb

Always a wonderful experience. Not for those looking to save money - expect to spend at least 100/person - but worth finding that money, especially for Eloise fans.

I really wanted to love this afternoon tea. It's a NY institution after all. But the more I think about it, the more unimpressed I am. My main gripe is that for $95 a head (excluding tax or tip) I expect perfection. I know that half of what I paid for was the experience of dining at the Plaza, but the venue doesn't give a free pass on the food not being to an exceptional standard. Overall, nothing was outstanding, but there was one thing that was overwhelming memorable for the wrong reasons - the scones. They were probably the worst scones I have ever had the displeasure of being served. They were so dry they crumbled like cookies. This is extremely disappointing. And if you are going to serve such horrendously dry scones, at least provide a very liberal serving of cream and jam to go along with it so your diners can attempt to cover up your horrible creation and add some moisture - not the teaspoon of cream that was provided. There were other tiny details that were not up to par with expectation and similar dining experiences. Honestly - I wouldn't recommend this at all - I think it may have become a tourist trap.

The Palms is beautifully decorated and posh. However, the $95/person charged for their Tea Service was ridiculous. The deserts were supermarket/frozen quality and the tea arrived luke warm. Our server was no where to be found and she was very short with us. I was greatly disappointed.

Our server, Fazir, is beyond amazing. We could not have asked for better service. He was perfect. And the tea and food are always perfection. It was the perfect place to take my niece for a very special occasion.

This was a really disappointing experience. I booked advising the hotel this was a celebration for my daughters birthday and that my daughter is a vegan.

The service was awful, at one stage we were asked 'are you still working on that'! All the ladies were given a holiday gift chocolate, very nice but they had no alternative for my daughter. During the tea my daughter heard 'happy birthday' and looked round to see an individual celebration cake being presented to another table - when I enquired as to where my daughters celebratory cake was I was told that they were not for vegans, again no alternative was offered.

We were then rushed to finish our afternoon tea so they could set the tables up for dinner.

What a memorable thing to do. We took our 10 year old granddaughter. We enjoyed it as much as she did. We found all the wait staff friendly and knowledgeable. We especially enjoyed our waiter, Elvis, who kindly explained the variety of teas, and looked to our every need. It was visually and gastronomically spectacular! Though a bit pricey, we felt it was well worth it for the experience and memory.

Paid $100 per person for tea which includes 1 pot of tea, 4 finger sandwiches that cost about $3 to make, 2 hockey puck scones, and tasteless desserts. Additional sandwiches and tea was not available. We were also sat in the very back of the restaurant with VERY close neighbors and there were NO patrons in the front of the restaurant. Our view was the waiter station. Very Disappointed! Tea at the Ritz Carlton and Tiffany's were significantly better.

 (Las Vegas)·Dined on January 3, 2018

Very disappointing afternoon tea, really over priced, bad service not a 5 star wxperience at all!
Im used to going to afternoon tea at high end hotels in the US, UK and Australia and the tea itself isnt expensive to peoduce but you pay the prices for the experience, the luxury, the silver service, its a time to dress up and be spoiled.
But out of all the hotels ive been The Plaza was the worst i have had.
I had to wave my arms around trying to get a waiters attention, the waiters (when one sis come over) were stern and ‘dumped’ things on the table. In the end i had to fo ask manager at the deont of the Palm Court to go find a waiter.
Then half way through there was a horrific burning rubber/plastic smell which made it very unpleasant. On my way to the restroom i had to ask a member of staff in the lobby what the smell was and was told it was new heaters. No one bothered to come and apologise to us in the restaurant and explain they just had 2-3 members of staff chatting bubthe feont entrance ignoring the guests.
The restroom was ao far away, out the restaurant, in the lobby full of people and luggage laying on the floor/stairs, go up a dlight of staits in to a bar area, go up another flightbof stairs to another bar area and its at the back of that and it only has 2 cubicles for the whole hotel so the line was very long so in the middle of my tea i wasted 20 mins just going to the toilet to find no toilet roll!
I complained to the restaurant manager who basically fobbed us off and said ‘we all have to do deal with the burning smell’ and said will deal with her staff but disnt sound in anyway apologetic. What a waste of £95 + tax and ruined the last day of our trip!!!

We went for breakfast at this iconic venue whilst on holidays. We were so disappointed in the food and the service. I had the Bircher muesli (not soaked and very boring) and my partner had eggs, potato and sausage (horrible - cold, the eggs had no whites? And the potatoes had been sitting around for goodness knows how long). Cost was outrageous for such poor quality food ($90!! Including coffee, tea and juice - which they just offer you out of a pitcher then charge you $12 a glass). I wrote to the plaza and received no reply. By far the worst meal and experience we have had here. SO many other places that are so much more delicious to eat at!! If you want to see the Plaza, go to the food court below.

They rush you...if you let them. Our waiter just dropped the food and left. We had to continually hunt him down and ask for basics. They were well staffed. The wait staff just seemed to take it easy...

Food is pre-prepared. You can taste that some of the bread on the sandwiches has aged during the day. The scones were hard, too hard.

We love the tradition of Afternoon Tea. Is our experience the exception or the norm, Plaza?

 (London)·Dined on January 1, 2018

The afternoon tea at the Plaza is not good value for money. The food is nice but the service is haphazard and sometimes quite rude. For example the woman who “greeted” us clearly didn’t want to be there and saw us as a nuisance. She didn’t offer to take our coats and looked like she was moments away from an eye roll when we asked her a question. Once we were seated, after being told rudely to “wait over there” (despite us turning up at the correct time for our booking), our waiter was friendly enough. The food was good - nothing amazing - and the atmosphere was only OK. For example, behind us were all the cutlery, crockery, bins and other “stuff” - not hidden away discretely, but there for all to see. Overall, therefore, we felt that for a VERY expensive tea, this should have been an awful lot better. The staff need to be better trained at being polite and making guests feel wanted at what should be a special meal. Instead it felt like this was a tired and frankly underwhelming experience - clearly the staff agree. This does not rival the afternoon tea experience in London and other major European cities.

I thought it would be a la carte as advertised but it was a buffet and that too a small spread. The waiters did not seem Plaza standard. They tried hard i think there was a staffing issue but seemed out of their comfort zone. Asked for ketchup and mustard got mayo and then he legged it before i could tell him. Cold hot chocolate. Some buffet items cold. Spilt juice on table cloth as was rushing. Just not what one would expect at the Plaza!!

Had a New Year's Day breakfast at this iconic place.
What a DISGRACE to the institution this hotel represents!

The A la carte menu was not available (they didn't mention this on their website or via Opentable) and all you could choose from was a miserable buffet packed with industrial breads, freshly unfrozen mini croissants, the classic 3 star hotel warm overcooked selection of rubbery scrambled eggs and various meats that have all been sitting in there for hours.
On a tiny side table, a selection of smoked salmon (surprisingly good) and a few miserable plates featuring a couple cold meat selection and 2 cheeses.

The waiter comes to the table to offer you free refills of "fresh squeezed" orange juice that tastes strangely like Tropicana (not the Original mind you, the one with pulp so they hope their clients will be fooled.)

They charge 50$ per adult and $30 for children. Quite hefty for a dose of industrial foods to start the new year.
But hey, you're at the Fairmont Plaza Hotel in NY...

I am a frequent user of Opentable and never posted a review before today. Not that I haven't had my share of poor or extraordinary experiences in the past. I'm just not into reviews.

But being a New Yorker and seeing a company that manages to drive such a honorable building into the ground gets me. Hence this review.

FAIRMONT people, wake up and stop taking this place (and your guests) for granted.
What you're doing at the Palm Court is a disgrace.

Classic New York! You won't get a bargain here, but Afternoon Tea while wildly expensive is a lot of fun. You get plenty of sandwiches, a few sconces and an array of mini-pastries...well more than any one person will eat. The teas are delicious and plentiful. A great treat if you can afford the high price: $90+ pp, for anyone over 12. My daughter (15), niece (13) and I had a delightful time on New Year's Eve afternoon (we were all given chocolate replicas of The Plaza as gifts!), but if the price makes you balk, stay away and try Lady Mendl's downtown or someplace else. You go for the location, the vibe and the crazy old school-ness of it all. But whew, it's expensive!

The ambience was lovely as it was decorated for Christmas. The staff were friendly and attentive. The teas were divine and there was plenty to choose from. The food was nice but was obviously made much earlier and refrigerated which took away a bit from how yummy they could have been if it was fresh. But it was a close as I've been able to find to a traditional afternoon tea in the USA.

The service we received was poor and far below the expected levels from the Plaza Hotel. Our Waitress none existent at times, and the place wasn't even busy, resulting in empty wine glasses which we ended up filling up ourselves. I ordered the filet mignon (medium) with a sides of mash, broccoli & asparagus. The steak was cold and well done at best, the greens were cold and so where our friends fries. Very Very Very Disappointed! Do not recommend this place at all....

The interior was gorgeous and the afternoon tea was nice and cute. However, they need to work on making their guests feel more welcomed. I felt like I was being rushed so that my table could go to someone else. Not even 20 minutes after receiving our order, the waiter comes and says "you know they're going to give you the check in 1 hour after you came." As if to say we weren't allowed or welcomed to enjoy our stay leisurely. An hour passed and nobody bothered us about leaving or what not. Just a rude waiter. We were having an enjoyable time till he came up. Ok yes the plaza hotel is a popular attraction and therefore, busy. But don't accept a number of guests that will jeopardize the quality of each visit. Ever heard of hospitality??

What a fabulous afternoon tea experience!
Three friends and I were visiting from Ireland last week and dined here during our stay in New York City. We cannot fault our afternoon tea experience in the Palm Court at the Plaza.
The room itself is spectacular, as was the delicious food and the service was second to none.
I recommend everyone who visits New York to pay a trip here - you won’t be disappointed!

We booked through open table and thought we were booking for Christmas tea, when we got there, they told us tea service ended at 4:30, sooooo, there we were at 5:30. The tea is pre- prepared trays (we been multiple times) ... so they could have apologized for the misunderstanding and served us, but no.
We ordered food and it was good. They forgot to bring us a drink and billed us. The Plaza is beautiful and an amazing location. It was quite and comfortable- we were there 2 hours and it was lovely.
