We have always looked forward to the Painted Lady’s Experimental Wednesdays. In the past we have reserved 2-3 times per season and always were joyful at the creative cuisine revolving around a diversity of themes. We felt so fortunate to have a restaurant of this quality within our local community. On this occasion the theme centered around the author, Roald Dahl. While the menu clearly embraced the whimsical and dark Dahl creations, the cuisine was lacking for the first time. We have never strayed from a universal 5-star rating in any of our past experiences. This visit the service lived up to the exemplary flawless quality of the past. The food, however was disappointing enough to cause us to cancel our February reservation. The only standout course was the amuse bouche “donut with duck liver mousse” - the Twit Bird Pot Pie was a stunner in presentation with the adoring chicken foot popping out of the pie, but the taste and temperature underwhelming. The sausage stuffed lamb was even more tepid and lacked flavor because of the temperature served. Perhaps most disappointing from a highly regarded restaurant was the dessert course. A deli sized slice of chocolate layer cake, devoid of any inspiration or beauty. The Carmel gelato saved the day and most of us declined to finish the bland cake and politely passed on wrapping it up, for fear it would remind us of our sincere disappointment.
As former front and back of the house industry employees - we recognize that things happen. The flu moves through the ranks and the culinary team is short on execution, people move on (we missed Bernie’s warmth and welcoming smile), the times may have created unknown challenges. We will pause, continue to monitor other guests reviews and hope that this Experimental Dinner disappointment was a “beyond our control” anomaly.
Food, service (Alexandra!!!!), wine parings were amazing!
Restaurant decor, dim lighting, tabletop arrangement are getting a bit worn and dated.
Very pricey ($200/pp with wine pairings) but a great overall experience.
Excellent food and service.
I did the wine pairing and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Towards the end of our meal as the restaurant filled the ambient noise started to rise with the larger crowd.
By FAR the best dining experience in Oregon wine country. Superb service. Delicious and adventurous food. Start with a signature cocktail. The wine pairings are perfect. TRUST the chef. A perfect destination for special occasions or celebrations.
As an added bonus, they paid special attention to a dairy allergy in our dining party and knocked it out of the park for her.
A special gem whether visiting or live locally. Will stay on our list of special dining experiences.
At this restaurant, everything is alway exquisite!
The Painted Lady always gives you a brilliant meal combined with world class service and thoughtful presentation.
Great tasting menu experience! The service was incredible and each course kept you guessing. They also provided a special birthday treat for enjoyment later.
What are the best meals I’ve had ever. Can’t believe this is something found in a small town. Five star dining in a small town. I’ve been all over the world and I’m telling you this is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to.
The service was exceptional 5 star and very attentive. My husband and I did the 8 course dinner with wine pairing. Our wait staff was exceptionally knowledgeable about the wine. The pairing were expertly done and introduced us to the best Pinot noir we had in Oregon. We truly enjoyed this 5 star dinner and was the highlight to our Oregon trip. We enjoyed the Patricia green Pinot so much we visited the winery the following day. Can’t imagine missing that vineyard but we would not have found them without the wine pairing. That is the kind of insider experience we are all searching for in this this kind of experience - truly enjoyable - outstanding!
Always the best! My favorite restaurant in Oregon.
World-class food and wine experience. Fantastic!
We thought the 2nd floor dining room was claustrophobic, the food was unhealthy (no greens) and the price was ridiculously high.
The restaurant is in a lovely former home and well set-up for small tables. They provide a pre-fixe, 8 course of small plates. Wonderful food and very good wine. A bit spendy, so best for special occassions.
My husband and I love trying different restaurants and have experienced tasting menus throughout the world. As we live in the Northwest , we decided we should try The Painted Lady
We were underwhelmed. The service was impeccable but except for the miso soup which was delicious and unusual the other courses although beautifully presented were not interesting or even tasty in some cases
I had hoped to do the 5 courses as I have a small appetite ( other restaurants including Michelin star rated have been able to do this) but The Painted Lady said we had to both do the same number of courses. The result was I was not able to eat the last 3 courses
I am glad we tried the restaurant but won’t return
Terrific meal served by folks who are proud of what they do. Each dish was well composed. Lots of play on textures.
My husband and I have been coming here annually for years. The service is spectacular and the ambience is lovely. Because the dining room is small it can get noisy. We have always found the food to be fabulous but this year there were a few dishes that were disappointing.
What a gem! It’s a must if celebrating something special.
We celebrated my wife's birthday at the Painted Lady. This is a high end restaurant that always meets expectations. It did not disappoint. All the many courses were beautifully arranged and prepared to perfection. I am a vegetarian (seafood) and they had no problem accommodating me. They treated us like royalty, yet were friendly and very willing to answer questions. I gave a moderately high noise level as a large party of 8 or so were very loud, thoroughly enjoying themselves as well.
Truly one of the greatest dining experience of our lives. Amazing food, impeccable service, beautiful food and wine pairings. It’s pricey, but worth it!
Outstanding dining experience, not to be missed! Creative, tasty and truly inspiring, the wines paired with each course were perfect. We'll be back!
Fantastic dining experience. I've been to numerous fine dining restaurants, but The Painted Lady is one of my favorites. The food was all delightful. The staff was attentive and eager to meet dietary restrictions of the party. The wine pairing is a must and it can be split with a partner. It's really amazing how the wines compliment the food. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend this for a special occasion.
Amazing service and meal. So impressed! The only thing missing was some good Oregon craft beers.
Spendy but superb as always, The Painted Lady is a culinary journey. Beautifully prepared cod, melt in your mouth wagyu and unending array of local produce made the meal worth the cost. Go with lots of time and if you can try the wine pairing.
Great food and service however the sommelier was inattentive almostnot there .
This in spite of us buying a very expensive bottle of white burgundy to start the meal.
Furthermore he iced the bottle after first pour.....for a premier cru no less...inexcusable,
Not for the price. Food was good but not great. I had high expectations going in. I expected more complexity for the price. The food should be a work of art at this level and price.
In town from out of state.
My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous experience at The Painted Lady for our wedding anniversary. Every course on the tasting menu was done to perfection and tasted phenomenal. The service that was delivered met every expectation and our main server was the best. She explained each course and the wine paired with it. She new the history of each wine and the story behind each course served. The wines that were paired with each course were selected perfectly and the ambiance in the restaurant was absolutely beautiful, down to the restroom upstairs. They even brought my wife and I a beautiful created anniversary dessert. I would highly encourage anyone visiting Newberg to enjoy this experience. Job well done Chef and the entire team.
This restaurant came recommended so I made it our “special occasion” dinner . The night before we did a 5 course dinner WITH wine pairings for each course and it was amazing At another restaurant . I made reservations at Painted Lady for the 5 course instead of 8 knowing wine was not included but figured it would still be spectacular. $90 additional for wine (which I overheard was about 2 and 1/2 glasses) was a little much . The food was tasty but I would be embarrassed serving such small portions. I understand presentation and quality but there is no reason that such small amounts of food should be plated . I feel it was about $35 worth of ingredients and for $95 we paid was unjust . I would not recommend or come back again .
This is the best dining experience I’ve ever had. The attention to detail is incredible. Every dish was delicious fresh and flavorful
Excellent food and service
one of the best meals you can have in wine country.
Best tasting menu with wine pairing that we have had!!!
Excellent service and food. It was an amazing experience to celebrate our anniversary.
J’Aime was excellent, dining was exquisite, presentation was unsurpassed
This was a bucket list item for my husband and I and it lived up to every expectation and more. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent.
Beautiful, chic atmosphere, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and cuisine to the level of art work with a wine list to be envied. Worth every penny for the amazing experience.
The service was great. The food wasn't particularly innovative but was good (oyster mushrooms were over salted, desserts were not great). Over priced compared to fine dining tasting menu standards in bigger cities but a nice experience overall.
