Made from ingredients seasonal and local, and prepared with classic French techniques, our menu of eclectic American cuisine takes on regional favorites and modifies them with flavors and textures unique to the Pacific Northwest.
In an atmosphere that's stylish, sophisticated, and cool, The Original honors the past as it listens in on the pulse of Portland's evolving tastes.
DINER + ARCADE = THE DINERCADE
The Original’s Dinercade is located on the mezzanine level of The Original. A cool mix of new and retro arcade video games, with a craft cocktail, beer and wine lounge. A great space for all to enjoy while you and your group are trying to beat the high score on Pac Man.
The Original: Eat. Drink. Gather.
Wonderful experience. Will definitely be back. Roughly my 10th time dining here. This time breakfast party of 4 people for my birthday. We stay at the hotel attached to the restaurant so it’s convenient for morning breakfast. Thank you for the birthday dessert! Super tasty cherry tart. Biscuits and gravy were nummy as was the huevos rancheros.
Great time. The food was excellent.
The Mexican omelet made for a great Christmas morning breakfast! Great service and great food, excellent prices for such a fun atmosphere. Only negative was the coffee. Just not very good which is probably more noticeable since it’s such a coffee driven city. I’ll definitely be back and I’m looking forward to trying out dinner.
We came in for breakfast, ordered a bloody Mary, large orange juice, Northwest Logger and the Chicken Fried Steak. For $12 I would have expected more of a larger size for the cocktail and for $7 for a large orange juice, that it would have been bigger.
As for the food itself, it was ok. The portions were definitely small for the price, making it almost not worthwhile. The chicken friend steak came out rare instead of medium which is the standard, as confirmed by the waiter when we asked. It was still bleeding on the plate and the portion was very very small. We also had to wait quite a while after we were finished eating for the check, since our waiter was too busy chit chatting with other servers and then attending to other tables before making his way back to our table.
Would not return for a breakfast experience, but perhaps dinner service.
Our service was impeccable! I tried Poutine for the first time. Tasty and messy! The food could be seasoned a bit more strongly, for instance, the gravy on the poutine was a bit bland. All in all a great experience and I will be returning with guests from out of town!
The original is an excellent dining experience...food is delicious, service is friendly and attentive, and the vibe is cool and relaxed...our favorite bite are the doughnut sliders, but ‘the people’s choice’ Bloody Mary was our favorite part of breakfast...would recommend the original to anyone and everyone
Great food. Inventive menu. Attentive staff. Reasonable prices. Can't ask for more. We especially loved the Croque Monsieur, the french fries poutine, and the sauted mushrooms. Drinks were also delicious. Free valet parking for dinner was also helpful, but they are also near the light rail line
Great ambiance and very nice servers! Nothing out of the Ordinary (no pun intended!) in terms of breakfast food but overall a really lovely option! Definitely would go back.
It was a birthday brunch. Everyone left full and satisfied!
Great food and our waitress was really friendly!
Great place for food, service and atmosphere! Lots of great comfort food on the menu.
Loved the chicken and waffles and creme brûlée French toast
Fun place downtown. Great comfort food. Service was attentive and fast. Don't miss upstairs - pinball games and old video games! Breakfast 24/7 and all items we got were delicious.
Adorable, lovely server, great cappuccino and a brilliant chicken with jalapeño waffles. The salmon Benedict was on the upside of okay.
One of my favorite places in downtown!
Hash browns are cooked too much on the outside and not enough on the inside; they're also made in the form of a brick so there is quite a bit of uncooked potato.
We really enjoyed our breakfast at The Original. The ham on the eggs benedict was "off the bone", very lean and generous. The burrito was "as big as your head" and wonderful. Classic diner feel and great service.
Good food! Great service. Strong drinks. Good for a meal before a show downtown. I would definitely go there again.
Yummy crispy chicken and tuna melt sandwiches! Friendly service. Fun decor.
Downtown parking. To be fair, I enjoy Ruben sandwiches but yours was so bad that I could not finish it. You served no condiments or chips with it. It really is very rare when I do not finish a meal or take home the rest. Even Arby's Rubens are superior which I tried once. My guests also mentioned the poor quality of the food and did not finish their meals or take home left-overs. They ordered a burger and a breakfast. It was simply gross. I am sorry but I would never recommend The Original to anybody. Your servers were great but your food is substandard and not fit for human consumption.
We’ve been a few times now and have enjoyed the food and service each time. There’s a fun, quirky vibe with great food and drink options. Great for kids, too.
Outstanding service. Food is tasty. Good variety to choose from. Cute ambiance. Not too noisy. A family go to. We love The Original.
Cauliflower was very good.
Great selection of healthy and vegetarian choices for breakfast. The veggie sausage patty was killer, unlike any other, I have eaten. My friend had the delicious braised greens instead of potatoes and we both indulged in their extremely tasty biscuits.
Great food, real fast service & overall an excellent choice for lunch.
The food was delicious. Just be aware that if you look online and see their "All Day" menu, it is not served all day. The have periods of time that are not considered to be part of the day and they serve a smaller menu. Luckily for me, after expressing that was what I came in for specifically, the chefs agreed to make me the french toast that had looked soooo good online. Can confirm - it was worth the long drive to get there for the Creme Brulee French Toast. It is a must if you go there.
Excellent host and server; humorous, attentive and engaging. Food was delish and served quickly. My bloody mary and candyland were both superb.
It was pretty pointless to have a reservation and to have noted it was a special occasion. We got the absolute smallest table and it was right against the window. Literally against the window. The table must have been no bigger than 24 inches by 24 inches. The two people seated after us were taken to a comfortable, spacious booth across from us and they didn't have a reservation. As for the service. It was not the best but that's another story. It was just average. Pointless to have used open table. They did not give two sh**s.
Such an interesting menu! I tried the donut sliders and chicken waffle sliders and both were worth trying. I was a fan of mustard sauce paired with chicken waffle sliders and waffle was a cornmeal flavor. The donut burger sliders were so yummy.. donut was harder than a donut but the patty with sweet was like a flavor explosion. Very cool! Vibe is like diner yet upscale bar remixed into one.
Fun and we were a big group. Service was great.
I stumbled upon this place on Open Table. Nice, retro vibe. Food was good, although the server was slammed - could have used a little more help.
What happened? The Original has long been a favorite of mine, but if this visit is representative of the current state of things, no need to come back. The service was prompt, friendly and excellent as always - no issues there. However, the food was not so good. My favorite dinner, the meatloaf, was dry, topped with an overpowering mustard sauce and looked like it had been kept warm for hours before serving. The mac & cheese, another favorite, is no longer. Just a bland mix of pasta shells and watery sauce. Three of us had the same thing, so it can't even be excused as one bad plate - it was universally bad. Yet another favorite, the boozy shake Salty Jim, was just as boring and lackluster as everything else. I don't know what happened here, and I am really disappointed that this place has gone downhill so much, but there are too many good places nearby in downtown Portland to settle for this.
Fantastic food. Vegetable Scramble was amazing, TILLAMOOOOOOK. Only disappointment was Poptart, looked amazing, but ended up being average, was basically stuck pie crust with filling wrapped inside. Tasted just like a piece of pie but with less filling. Overall a great place!
Food was awesome! Great coffee...Chicken and waffles were amazing!! Pancakes were fluffy and fresh! Service was friendly and fast!!
Great experience! Our server, Kiefer, was awesome. The food was delicious. Definitely the best chicken and waffles I have ever had.
BLAT and Oregon Salad and Bloody Mary.
Nice little Saturday morning.
Awesome , great food , great service , fantastic views
We love grabbing Sunday breakfast at The Original! The food is always delicious, the staff is fantastic and it's just an overall great little joint; suitable for any type of group. Chicken & Waffles are a personal favorite!
Great food & friendly, efficient service! Love the all day breakfast & other menu items. I had the corned beef hash & it was delicious.
We enjoyed the ambiance and of the Cafe and the wonderful, cheerful service. The food better than was described on the menu, Cream Brûlée French toast tasted creamy with caramelized bits of sugar on top and the Mixed greens with beets, hazelnuts, Chèvre dosed in a yummy Vinegerette. It was nice sitting and watching the activity on the street through the huge windows while eating our lunch. We would highflying recommend coming here for a bite and drink as they also have a full bar. We will be back soon!!
