An intimate pub and restaurant that serves old fashioned American and European fare, The Old Sage is nestled in the heart of Seattle, Washington and cooks with fresh ingredients made to order. At The Old Sage, Guests can enjoy hearty items that include smothered beef ribs, smoked goat, hickory burger, pork sandwiches, roasted cauliflower and salmon tartare.

The Old Fashioned is always on point. Though the date was short, the drink was perfect. Quiet enough to converse during early happy hour, which is one of the reasons I love the place. Though we did not eat on this date, can confirm everything on the menu is awesome.
From the "host" that greeted us (he was puzzled as to how and where to seat us, even though he confirmed our reservation), to the servers who got drink orders wrong or failed to deliver them altogether, as well as the kitchen staff who couldn't get our orders right, the service here was so bad, we found it hilarious. It wasn't mean-spirited bad service, just plain brain-dead all around. Wow. Unlikely we will return, since there are lots of other options nearby.
I've been here before and had a simply stellar experience, but this visit may prevent me from ever returning again. We had horrible service, not only did she forget our food order twice but I had to twice go find her and remind her of the food order. Then our appetizers arrived AFTER our main courses. She also forgot to bring our drinks and then didn't refill or check on us for an eternity. The food was incredible on our first visit here, but this time it was just ok. Definitely must have gotten a new chef. It was over-seasoned and inconsistent. The menu is small, so everything we tried the first time we re-ordered the second time. Pricing is fair, ambiance is great. If you decide to give it a try and your server is tall and female with face piercings-- REQUEST A NEW TABLE. You will not receive good service. Or, your food probably. It's a shame because I really liked this spot the first time around.
The Food: The duck wings and short ribs were exactly what you would expect from a place that makes its name for smoked meats. Honestly some of the best I've ever had.
The Service: was mediocre to poor at best. We made a reservation for a group of 8 for 6:30pm for a Birthday which we put in the reservation. When we arrived there was 2 people in the entire restaurant and bar area. When we said we had a reservation the host/our server told us we couldn't sit at the tables and only in the bar because "those were reserved". What's the point of making a reservation? We then sat in the bar and watched them take walk-ins and seat them at the tables throughout the next few hours we were there. Apparently setting up tables for reservations is a huge task? Our server seemed extremely bothered by doing his job which was a huge disappointment as we tried to make a special reservation for a birthday dinner and arrived extra early during a slow time. Luckily the food was amazing but the service was so poor it affected our experience.
Memorable visit because of amazing flavors together with a knowledgeable and warm wait staff. We began with the malted emmer farro - a don't miss, incredibly unique starter that would be impossible to replicate - and duck wings, which were amazing, the duck simply dropping off the bones. We finished with the beef short rib and burger. I favored the short rib and my wife the burger, and both were not lacking in flavor. Across the board, the flavors were unparalleled and our server was fantastic, capably answering all of our questions.
In a nutshell: upscale food in a not-so-upscale setting. My husband ordered their version of the Monte Cristo: rich but very delicious. I had the lamb ribs: tender enough to fall off the bone, but oversalted for my taste. The salad that came with the ribs was very salty as well. The plates were unusual - white glazed earthenware with no curve or lip to them; just flat discs - they were striking, but I noticed that it was difficult for the waiter to get a purchase on the plate when it was time to remove it. The server poured water for us as soon as we were seated. It was room temp and tasted like tap water. It never occurred to me to ask for ice water; I wish I had. Concrete floor, minimalist decor: nothing to complain about, but nothing memorable either. I don't think the place has A/C. The door and most of the windows were open, and it was pretty warm inside. I was put off by the gnats flitting around overhead. Not sure who their target audience is, but pretty sure that as a 50-somethings, my husband and I aren't in it. We were the oldest people in the place by a decade or two. Enjoyed the food very much, but had no desire to linger afterwards.
We love the old sage, we've been there twice now and will continue to go. It was out 1 year anniversary and we shared a couple things. The short ribs are excellent, we've ordered those twice. And the duck wings are outstanding as well, especially if it's cherry season. The drinks were good and the service was fast, couldn't ask for much more!
The service was terrible this night as far it took forever to get a drink. What the hamburgers ladies. They are very juicy and the juice spits out at you. Would I come back? I can only hope it was a bad night! I don't like to write bad reviews but I must be honest. Full house drinks are important!
We had a group reservation for 11 people and even called day-of to confirm. When we arrived they showed no record of our party. After a wait they were able to accommodate us. The food was good as well as the service given our large group, but I doubt I will return.
Our waiter was the best thing about our experience. He was super friendly and knowledgeable, however the place was super busy, and he seemed to be the only person working. The food was good but small portions that were extremely overpriced. We spent over $70 and had a happy hour appetizer and drink with that price and left feeling hungry. It was our anniversary also, which I had included a note with our reservation. We were seated at a bar table, and I had asked right away to move to an open table. I was given an eye role (not by our waiter). We were not offered anything special for our anniversary. I was very disappointed. I would not go back
When we arrived for our reservation the waitstaff was completely unprepared because the list had not been checked. We waited in the lounge for over 20 minutes before a table opened and ended up waiting a complete hour from ordering our dinner to being served. Even though the place was not full, we could not get the attention of our server who was rarely seen and never glanced over to our table though we tried desperately to make eye-contact. Twenty minutes after asking for a to-go box and our check, we finally walked over to the bar and asked the tender to please tell our server to come to our table.
That being said, the food was exceptional though the beer selection and cocktails were only average.
My friends and I went to The Old Sage for a birthday celebration. Our group of 8 was welcomed with a reserved spot in the lounge for us to relax and enjoy some of the many great whiskey selections. We never felt rushed and really loved being able to sit and chat and laugh before moving over to our table for dinner. While the food menu may seem small, everything that we tried was amazing. We found ourselves trying to decipher the flavors in each dish and loved the variety of textures. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Even better was our service. Thadious was amazing. He helped us with drink options and deciding on our meals all while helping us feel welcome and very much taken care of. All in all it was an excellent evening!
On a Friday night the place was relatively empty in a busy area. That probably should have been a sign. We got our drink orders taken quickly but waited 15 minutes for them. Then when we ordered our food she said the kitchen was small and that it'd take a while for food especially because of some of the things we ordered (e.g. Monte Cristo). Not a huge deal but that was pretty much the last we saw of the server. We had asked the man busing tables for our server twice but she never came out so he ended up taking our orders. It seemed like there was only one server for the place but it was pretty empty and it should have been easily manageable. I'd say a large portion of the time, she was in the back doing who knows what. Food was meh.
Matt the chef was amazing, I have special dietary needs and he was very helpful in accommodating me. The food was AMAZING, and the service was excellent. While the menu is not extensive the group I was with tried most of the appetizers and we had 3 of the main courses. All were exceptional. I highly recommend Old Sage.
The Old Sage is perfect for whiskey lovers and folks who want a new food experience. The vibrant pickled veggies burst with flavor. The smoked meats are distinct in character and charm. The presentation is masterful. Service wonderful. I wish they had more wine to choose from but I tried my first scotch and it was smokey and gave a fun memory for our group to end our meal with! Fabulous dining experience.
It was a slow Thursday night. grabbed a two-top by the window. Only complaint about the ambiance is that the music is too loud in some spots.
Waiter was great - friendly and knowledgeable. The cocktails were excellent and masterfully created. Started with Pickled Vege's with our cocktails, then ordered a few plates. Second minor complaint is that the food came too fast. We hadn't even gotten through 1/2 the cocktail or the veges.
The food was excellently prepared with thoughtful and creative presentation. Be forewarned - the plates are small. These are tapas size servings at entree sized price tag. head of pig, was thin sliced and had great sauce, the Amberjack was served under glass with smoke. beautiful and tasty.
Old Sage features concoctions in food and libation that will test a finicky eater's mettle. Our waiter, Mason (I believe that was his name) was the extra spice balancing his time and energy between being personable, timely and informative encouraging us to try to the Pork's head and the Duck Wing and a drink with Tequila, vodka, habanero, lemon and more. Who knew?!
Grabbed a bite to eat before a concert. I came in pretty early in the evening. No one else was in the restaurant so I got to talking with the bartender. Really friendly staff and great mixed drinks. I'd definitely come back here again for dinner or drinks with some friends.
Dinner and drinks on a Sunday evening. Sunday happens to be all day happy hour, and much of our delightful dinner consisted of happy hour items. The bartender was very friendly, and gave honest and knowledgeable recommendations about both food and cocktails.
A celebration of food and drink. My dining companion is a wheelchair user and they accommodated us well and the space was easy for her to get around in. Each plate was an exciting adventure. If this place were a bit more affordable for me, I'd eat here at least once a month. Definitely going to come back on special occasions, and try more scotch.
