It's the oldest restaurant in San Francisco and the newly-completed historical renovation has brought new vitality to the area. The dining rooms are comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing. Finding parking in the area is very challenging. Service is mediocre (very under staffed) and we had to request several times for more butter, which finally arrived at the end of our meal. I felt that the menu items we ordered were over-priced for what we got.
The ambiance is wonderful and the history and charm of the place undeniable. But the service was spotty (several servers involved in bringing water, drinks, food makes for a disjointed approach and some "overlooked" requests) and the food good, but not sensational.
The food was too pricey. The chicken, baby back ribs, and short ribs were baked too much so that the food was too dry. The vegetables were baked also with the meats and were too oily. The clam chowder had tiny clams and the soup was too thin. We will not go back to this place.
One of the oldest if not the oldest restaurant in the City. Food here is great and not too pricy. Bad part, it was a hot day and the outer room was soo hot and yucky. No airconditioning for the outer room. Food portions are large and great tasting. Parking is rather difficult.
I recommend trying this place if you have time. I enjoyed it
This meal was...ok. Not bad, but not great. The food was pretty good but the kitchen and wait staff were incredibly overwhelmed, sending wrong plates to tables and disappearing for large stretches of time. This was more of a tourist trap than what I was expecting. However, we enjoyed the meal and the freshness of the seafood.
Food was good. Paella was different then expected coz it wasn't with rice coz it paella Italiano. Service was ok. I think she was the only one in that dining room so service fell short coz had to ask several times for like water and stuff. I would go back for the food but maybe not when they're so busy.
This is such a great restaurant. The food is delicious and it's great to have fish like sand dabs on the menu. The servers are very friendly and attentive and very welcoming. The décor is funky fun, with the old time memorabilia and I love sitting in a curtained booth in the dining room. They have a good cocktail menu and wine list, but you can't beat free corkage!
Great seafood. Our group (4) had various combinations of clams, mussels, shrimp and crab and all of it was delicious. Looking forward to another dinner the next time I'm in the San Francisco area. Well worth the drive from downtown (not sure if there is good public transportation).
We had a very nice lunch -- great service.
It's a fun place.
Everyone enjoyed their food -- but I have eaten here before and my seafood cioppino was not nearly as good as it usually is -- not much fish.
We'll return though -- I'll just order something else.
No corkage fee is great.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food here. Pretty much everything we ordered tasted great and the portions were a good size. LOVED the garlic bread and crab enchilada. These were my favorite out of everything we ordered.
The calamari was a lot better than I've had at other restaurants... well-breaded & crispy.
The clams escargot was interesting.... but real escargot (snails) are so much better. I probably wouldn't order this again.
The crab fettuccine was also delicious. It was loaded with crab meat and the noodles were perfectly cooked.
Other than the fact that we had to seat ourselves when we arrived and that they started clearing our table before we were even asked if we had finished our food, everything else was great.
This restaurant definitely is a city gem. I wouldn't hesitate to go back if I were ever to crave seafood.
Excellent service, my highest compliments; all the staffers were so accommodating! My family can be difficult especially around "ordering" time, I always feel sorry for the Server! The Crab Feast was super tasty, we'd plan to order other Entree's but the Crab Feast with the bread and Clam Chowder was plenty.
Here's my dinning, and common sense tip: With any restaurant - more than 4 make a reservation! Don't expect any restaurant to accommodate large parties without reservations.
Have been to this gem of a restaurant many times over the years to celebrate Birthdays and holidays and have always been impressed by the delicious seafood and impeccable service! This is an historic restaurant in San Francisco and you will be transported back in time with all of the old memorabilia and photos inside! I highly recommend this spot!!! ♥️♥️♥️
We were back in SFO to celebrate a milestone birthday and decided to take the occasion to also dine at as many of the old time restaurants as possible, like Tadich Grill, among others. Since The Old Clam House claims to be the oldest, we had to try it (again).
Sadly, Very Disappointed. Food was good but the service was unfocused. Our server was Marlon, who tried hard but had to deal with too many tables...and his runners were not too helpful.
6 of our party of 8 arrived and were offered the hot clam juice. Started out pretty good. Then the two others arrived...they had to ask for the same juice 3 times...even after Marlon said he would take care of it personally the second time around. No silverware for any of us nor bread plate (table not even set with advanced reservation?).
We believe the management tried to cut the staffing too thinly (might it have something to do with the SF mandates costs - which we were charged over $17 on our tab for that one item)... besides the whole team did not know how to support each other...a sure sign of lacking in proper training.
This place was fantastic. I got the sand dabs. So tasty and you did not have to remove the bones as it was already done. The blood orange Margarita was so tasty we had another. Service was excellent. Waitress kept checking on us every few minutes. They say that this place is the oldest restaurant in SF. Great history here wit lots of pictures of the City in the old days. Can't wait to go back
