The cioppino was not as good as it used to be about 6 years ago. Bummer! Didn’t feel the value of the meal was worth the price. They didn’t give us the signature clam juice until we realized we didn’t get it and asked for it after we were finished eating. Ordered the pasta and cheese kids meal and it tasted too oily. Not too pleased with what we paid for. Place is clean and staff friendly.

This old gem is always a treat, if one has a love of seafood, pasta or both. The clam chowder in a bread bowl is notable, and the cioppino is better than anything you'll find at Fisherman's Wharf. As soon as you're seated, shots of hot clam juice appear, which leads to briny toasts all round. A platter of peppers and fried calamari will start a table of hungry diners off right. The homey baked-in-a-pan bread goes beautifully with everything. Don't miss the sand dabs! During the last few years, the OCH has been spruced up, but without sacrificing the charm of its original interior. In operation since 1861, the Old Clam House is San Francisco's oldest restaurant in the same location, and should be better known than it is. Sometimes its bustling, sometimes quiet, and always welcoming.
Service was beyond bad. You know when you’re totally ignored for 15 minutes after being seated while staff are clearing empty tables that things will not go well , and they didn’t. Food was lousy for the money. Nice historical atmosphere though.
Food was excellent, service was good best linguini and clam I ever had said my wife and she is Italian born.
Great seafood restaurant. Service and food was excellent. A little hard to find but worth the effort. Parking was a problem.

My wife an I had been there a couple of times before for lunch and it was fine - enough to go back and try for dinner with a friend who was in town. It has a storied history and it's a fun atmosphere, but it would take a really good reason for us to go back.
- the complimentary hot clam juice (yum)
- chorizo bread (heart attack central and worth it)
- dungeness crab (fried in the shell - our friend enjoyed it)
- fisherman's platter (a literal handful of fried seafood with a compliment of half a dozen fried potatoes, fried inedible corn, olives, and pearl onions. Eating only one of the potatoes, I was finished before anyone.)
- ciopinno (take everything from the fisherman's platter, add a crab leg or two and throw it into a tomato sauce as thick as SF fog. My wife ate a few bites and we took it home thinking we could perhaps rescue it by making it a pasta dish. Nope.)
We go here with hopes that we get Alexi as our server. He's the best! So polite and efficient.
Always a favorite! Whether crab, mussels, cioppino, garlicky noodles, seafood linguini...it’s all yummy.
One of the oldest restaurants in the city, ambiance is funky & fun.
Took the Family there for Valentine’s Day. Despite having a reservation, it took about 45 minutes to be seated. The initial table was right in the entrance to the bar area and in a cold breeze, but to the hostess’s credit she moved us to a better table when it became available. The food was very good, and the service very attentive. Overall a good experience despite the wait on a busy night.
We ate at the Clam House for the first time this Valentine's Day and loved it. We usually eat in our neighborhood, where the restaurants are generally trendy. The Clam House was a breath of fresh air for us because it was traditional and authentic. The food was excellent. We will definitely be going back.
It was Valentine’s Day dinner so crowded and hectic but a lot of fun. Hadn’t been there in a million years and was very pleasantly surprised. Food was good, ambience was fun, will go back on a non holiday night and try it again.
Food was delicious at this historic spot which is clearly a favorite with the neighborhood locals. Reasonably priced for a seafood restaurant in San Francisco. Sorry to have missed the chorizo cheese bread which looked great. Service was great. A little noisy at the bar but it was fine once the locals finished their after work beers and left.
Asked for a booth, got seated in the patio. Was told a large party would be coming in MUCH later, they began arriving immediately. Asked to move tables, was told the order could not be switched to another table. HUH???!?! Was finally moved w/ NO apologies and told the bar area would also be noisy, which it was but not as noisy as the patio.
Food was just okay. We ordered the clams escargot and it was tasty but the presentation was very messy. It actually looked like someone dropped it. Service was okay. Atmosphere is quaint. We have been here many times before. It appears things have changed, perhaps under new ownership. The food seemed to be better before.
Went for my birthday. Wanted a casual, neighborhood place and this was great for those reasons. A few bad points, clam broth came to the table and it used to come with bread which was nice for dipping. Now you have to buy the bread...weird. So by the time we got our order taken and bread arrived the broth was cold. Yuck. Also my best friend orders the garlic noodles with crab and it had to be returned because it was waaaay too much raw garlic. Other than that the rest of the food was great. We had skillet roasted mussels, cesar salad, seafood linguine, crabwich, crab enchilada. I have had the fish and chips on a previous visit and it was the best fried fish I have had.
It's one our favorite restaurants. The food and service were excellent. We had no problem finding parking and we were seated right away.
We love this place. We come here very often on a regular basis. Everything on the menu is just delicious. This is a place that you can take your family, friends, and colleagues. This is a San Francisco staple.
Nobody was at the hostess stand and/or wise enough to check at the bar and my Open Table reservation was cancelled because I was a "no show". This was a very stupid oversight.
Food was disappointing. The Clams "Paella" was a cauldron full of slop - a nondescript acini pasta, overcooked vegetables, and five clams. Spicy sauce on Crab Enchiladas overpowers the delicate taste of the crab and the entrée doesn't work for that reason. Will stick to my favorites in the future - the Fisherman's Fry and Calamari Steak Dore.
Been going to the Clam House for 40 years. Last visit was OK last year. This visit... waiter brought food from the kitchen that was wrong (missing cheese on salad and cheeseburger). Calamari came from frozen? Beet salad had 'canned' taste to it. Fave dish -- seafood saute which included scallops -- no longer on the menu. Cool night and there was a chilly breeze wrapping around us all throughout the meal. Didn't enjoy the night, sad to say, and won't be back.
Overall this restaurant are good, up to stardard, we always go there for lunch, but never go for dinner yet!

Celebrated NYE. Our table arrangement was pieced together with a small circular table in the middle. This arrangement made it very hard for us to converse as a group. A disappointment right off the bat. Then literally 40 minutes to get our drink order! We had an 8:15 reservation, so the bartender should have been present and it was not that crowded. However, a couple of us did get water quickly. The food was good, but leans more toward quantity versus quality. Veggies were overcooked across the board. A couple of items that we look forward to (garlic bread and calamari appetizer) missed the mark this time. The crab cakes were very good and I would recommend that as an appetizer. We've spent many NYE at the Clam House, but I think this will be the last.
It had been a while since eating at The Old Clam House and I wanted to go back for New Year's Eve as I thought the food and ambience would be just as I remembered. Well, unfortunately it wasn't quite as I had remembered. Maybe because it was New Year's Eve and they were trying to turn the tables, but it seemed a bit rushed and it wasn't even packed. I guess my first clue was when I checked in with the Hostess (and that was after my son and my had gone ahead of me). I told her who I was and that the rest of my party was already there and she said "they're are in that room". Wow! Didn't even attempt to show me. Luckily I could see them right up front. Aside from that, the food was good. I shared the Ciappino and it was a bit spicy -- it had a Cajun 'kick' to it. While our server was really pleasant and friendly, you could tell she was really busy. But again, it was New Year's Eve.
Well, Happy New Year and maybe (a big maybe), I'll return (but not on New Year's Eve!
We keep returning because we are never disappointed. If I recall, our super server's name is Jair. He was so accommodating and courteous. We lucked out having him for New Year's dinner. Best corkage fee at TOCH... $0.00! Thank you
Calamari batter was like Popeyes. Crabwich was over powered by red onion. Crab enchilada was decent.
Our server had zero knowledge about some of the food item. I asked what Clams Escargo was and she said they were clam strips with garlic drizzle, she thinks . Bus boys should be the servers!
It was very busy tonight
Waited 30 mins for the server to come to greet us. Another 15 mins for drinks to arrive. Restaurant was emptying out, no reason for so much lag time. Food arrived burned and inedible. Also sloppy and poor quality.
Skip it. It’s not worth your time let alone your money.

We have eaten here many times. Unfortunately this was a very busy night and I’ve never experienced such poor service. Drinks never arrived (wine finally mid-way through dinner) , repeated attempts to just get water, bread arrived late, finally had to ask other wait staff for things. Our server would apologize but then still forget to bring wine or condiments, etc for our food. We will come back (maybe week night only - maybe earlier time) but would be to embarrassed to recommend to our friends as I’ve never experienced service like this. We just sat back and laughed among ourselves because we truly could not believe what happened the entire night. We tipped 15% because no matter how bad it was did not feel right about leaving zero as a statement. We just tried to make light of an unbelievable dining experience and not let it ruin our evening. I feel bad about this review but felt it was necessary to be honest and cannot recommend this place to people we know.

Loved it. Food was great and my 6yo loved it. Service was absolutely terrible, but I chalk that up to the fact that it was Christmas Day. Will definitely be going back.
We had been a regular to the original Old Clam House for years. Have only dined there twice since the new ownership. This was our second visit and was even more disappointing than the first visit. My husband had an excellent Fish and Chips. This is not the conventional preperation, but the fish was perfectly done and the “chips” good. We split a Cesar salad, very nice and ordered the special Garlic Skillet bread, which was good, but overly greasy for my taste. I had the combination shrimp and mussels, which was so bad that it was actually unateable. . The shrimp were so over cooked that they were like chewing rubber and the mussels had been cooked for someone else, sat on a counter somewhere, then pawned off on me. They were cold, not cool or somewhat warm, but absolutely cold. The server did remove that dish from our bill, but as a restaurant specializing in seafood, It was just plain awful. Will not return.
Great place always good. Last time we had a server and it was her second day, on christmas. She was a little flustered but got better as the night went on. All and all I'm impressed she did as good as she did for her second day especially for such a busy day!

The food was great but the wait service was poor. We were not acknowledged by wait staff for several minutes and had to ask for their attention to get started on ordering. The people who brought the food out were fine. Just the person taking out orders seemed to not care about her performance
