About

For New Orleans inspired cuisine at its finest, The Old Bay Restaurant is the place to go in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The night should begin with a cold beer, and there are plenty to choose from, both domestic and import. Cocktails are also available in plentiful supply, with the hurricane and mint julep being especially poplar choices at The Old Bay Restaurant.

For your meal, items such as barbecue pork sliders and chicken and sausage jambalaya await you at The Old Bay Restaurant. This is definitely a place where you will want to arrive hungry, as you will certainly leave full.

Ordered "fresh fish" obviously frozen. Huge group of twenty somethings came in and took over place. Extremely loud!! Could not hear at all. Waitress was wonderful! Would definitely not return.

We were heading to the State Theater and the Old Bay was a nice stop along the way....and an easy walk to the Theater (with a public parking lot right up the street). We were seated right away; upstairs looking down on the patrons and bar below. The noise level was moderate. We're sure there are times where it must get louder but being upstairs makes the sound level moderate. Our waitress was very attentive without being intrusive. While the specialty drinks are expensive; one Hurricane is more than enough for a night. We enjoyed the food in kind....a calamari poboy appetizer was just spicy enough with its spicy slaw. My wife enjoyed her blackened mahi mahi with root veggies and my 50/50 burger was cooked as requested and very filling. We'll be back.

We were taken to our table as soon as we arrived,Olivia, our waitress was pleasant and we didn't feel rushed at all.by the time our entrees were served the noise level was really loud. We were upstairs and there were several large tables around us.
Other than that, the portions were ample ,hot & spicy!!

Our Cajun favorites - Gumbo, Chicken & Sausage Jambalaya, and Shrimp Creole - were all excellent choices; flavorful, good-sized portions, just spicy enough.

Gabby's attentive, professional service was friendly and prompt without being over-bearing.

A great night out in New Brunswick!

We came here before we went to Stress Factory. Drinks were mixed just right. I had a Hurricane and my friend had a swamp water. Good stuff!

Loved the shrimp over grits and I had a burger. I very filling and satisfying one!

Our meals were extremely well-prepared. I'm very picky about gumbo, having grown up eating it, but Old Bay got it right. The shrimp and grits were phenomenal. The shrimp wasn't overcooked. The chicken and sausage jambalaya was perfectly prepared. The beignets were delicate and light. Our server was attentive without being annoying. I'm eager to return and try other dishes.

From start to finish, can't say enough wonderful things about the dining experience. Staff was wonderful, dinner delicious, atmosphere energetic and contagious. The executive chef made rounds and spoke to diners to obtain feedback on meals; he was an absolute delight to speak to. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and pairings. Can't say enough wonderful things about our experience.

Had a great time both time that I've dined at OB. Their seafood jambalaya , duck, crab cakes, and bread pudding is a must. They make one of a kind Bloody Mary that was delicious and had an awesome presentation. Friendly staff and lively dining area. Great for chatting it up and not worry about disturbing the next table.

Overall the food and waitress service was great. However the hostess seemed confused when I mentioned my reservation. The hostess then said to me that "They were clearing off my table and it would be ready in a minute or two". Fifteen minutes later, as I saw others being seated, the hostess asked me if I would mind sitting in the bar area. which I accepted.

My drink, a Spirited Gimlet, was good but definitely not worth $12. We had a free dinner coupon, which was nice, but the bill still came to over $72 with an 18% tip for only 1 drink, 1 house wine, 1 dinner & 2 desserts. Don't go here if you're concerned about $$. Dinners were just so so - Crab & Shrimp cake, very mushy and "Dreamboat" Sole with a lobster sauce. Had succotash type veggies and lima beans were on the hard side. Rice was just OK. The French Quarter Beignets were terrible and not worth trying. There were supposed to be six, we got four. Tasted like cardboard, definitely not what you get in New Orleans. My dessert, Warm Chocolate Praline Tart, had an overpowering amount of molasses which I did not even see in the description. Totally different than what I expected. Waitress was very pleasant and helpful. It was a Thursday night and lots of tables open. Noise level was not an issue and we were seated right by the bar area. Street parking was a bit difficult but you can use the hotel lot across the street. Will not be going back.

Service was very slow - when we arrived we waited about 15 minutes to be seated - perhaps the normal host was not because the person at the desk did not seem able to find any of the reservations - 3 people ahead of me were having the same issue; food was good

We've been to Old Bay a number of times. The food this time was good but spicier than normal. All of us (party of 4) felt that there was too much spice in the food.

I booked a reservation for myself and 5 others for dinner before attending a comedy show at Stress Factory across the street. Prior to making the reservations, i did a little research on the place and noticed mixed reviews about the quality of food and service so I knew it was a 50/50 chance I'd have a positive dining experience. the place is very nice with appealing New Orleans/Mardi Gras decor; however, the food left much to be desired. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't good. The appetizers were decent. We ordered the crab and spinach dip, crab cakes and oysters. For my entree, i ordered the duck with waffles. i wouldn't order it again. My boyfriend had the pecan crusted catfish and said it was just ok. The drinks were awesome. i ordered 2 long island iced teas and they were strong! The service was great through. We had a very attentive waitress. We had reservations for 7pm and it didn't seem very crowded; however, after a while, the place starts to fill up fast. i heard it turns into a local college party scene after 10pm. I wouldn't want to stay for that since i'm well past my college years. i prefer more quiet atmospheres at a restaurant. Overall, i would recommend this place for drinks with coworkers and friends but not for the food. I would be willing to give this place another chance based on the great service and drinks but i would definitely order a different entree.

We chose the Old Bay for convenience to the State Theater. Good drink menu and many choices for the craft beer lover. The appetizer was delicious. We had the crab and shrimp cakes with very nice plate presentation. My husband had the seafood jambalaya which was a huge portion, enough that we could have shared. I had the sole with panko and Andouille crust. Tasty, but, given the choice I would not order again. The fish was dry.

I was so looking forward to dining at Old Bay as there are so few Cajun restaraunts around. We sat up stairs and unfortunately there was a table of 12 below and the their laughter and conversation totally over took our previous tranquility. The drinks were good as was the service, however that's where it ended. The Anduille bread was totally flavorless as was the seafood gumbo and seafood jambalaya. If you want quantity then this is a 5 star but if you're looking for quality then this is a 1.

I came here with a friend for a first date sort of thing. I had requested a table online and stated a request and when I arrived they honored my request well. Also the service was nice with the waiter offering his reccomendation for the menu and it was great. The area was less full than I had expected for a friday night but not to say this was a bad thing. Overall my experience was enjoyable, great for a casual first date as its not too romantic but still intimate.

Good Service & huge portions. Next time we'd order 2-3 entrees for our table of 5-6 since most dishes are capable of satisfying 2 people. As we were going straight to a show at State Theatre afterwards, we could not keep doggie bags in our car for next 4-5 hrs.

Our group of 10 enjoyed a great dinner before the Penn State vs. Rutgers football game. Great food and drink plus an easy shuttle bus or drive to the stadium. The menu selection made both Creole lovers and mild eaters happy. We will come back independent of the football game schedule.

We were very much looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately, we were Very disappointed. I ordered seafood jambalaya. It was barely edible. The seafood was rubbery and the dish was itself was greasy. Barely edible. My wife ordered the fish special and it was tasteless. Not a good dining experience.

We are never disappointed when we eat at the Old Bay. Everything from the specialty cocktails to the entrees is great. I would give it 5 stars for food except for little things. For example, the waffle that comes with the duck dish was a little dry. I wish they offered grits as a side.
Also if they send you upstairs, don't drink too much because going down that spiral metal staircase can be tricky, especially in heels. And the tables are a little tight up there too.

Been here a few times over the years when I am in town for business. Taken groups there and they can accommodate. This time I took six people. All dishes were excellent. I had Crawfish Etouffee and it was killer. Having lived in New Orleans for five years, "killer" is a very high mark! Atmosphere is downscale but its not a dive. Service was decent.

I've been here many times and never walk away disappointed in anyway! Well unless I get stuck un the upstairs dining room where the only way to get to it is climbing an old metal spiral staircase so tight and difficult to negotiate it's amazing more people don't get injured! Remember when making reservations to request a downstairs table.

Overall rating a B with a somewhat limited menu but all the food is superb! The ambiance is intimate at times and other times can be loud when in season. Always great musical entertainment on the weekends and a good relaxed diverse crowd.
