The Oakwood Canadian Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Food is good and value is pretty good.
However, the waitress who served us is very bad. Very rude when we have questions about the dinner menu. Very impatient server when the restaurant is not even busy. She was eating in the kitchen for over 5 minutes while we are waiting for her to take our orders. Very horrible service and I will not return to this place ever again.
Honestly amazing! My boyfriend and I went for our first Oakwood dinner date (as we had done brunch together, but he had never been to dinner there), and everything from the service to the food was bar none for the price point. We had the burrata, kale, spaghetti, and salmon in October 2017 (which is a relevant detail considering that the menu is seasonal). Everything and anything on the menu is fantastic, but I would highly recommend the warm kale salad, which is probably my favourite item on the menu regardless of the season, any of their home-made pastas, and short ribs. You will not regret visiting this gem in the city of a myriad of delicious food!
The only thing that was off was the timing on the service. Two of three meals came out well before the third. This meant that the first two meals were almost finished by the time the third meal came out. Timing could have been better. Great restaurant however, with very good food.
Happy place with a low key decor.
Good, happy, professional waiters, prompt and unobstrussive.
Exquisit dishes, each one more than the other, different flavours and aromas, beautifully presented. Great Chef. It was a very nice experience for us. Perhaps music a bit lower....
Went with another couple..ordered two each of three dishes which worked really well for us. Food came out with perfect timing and the helpings were well sized. Old world wine list short but adequate. We had great service, water glasses always full, never had to pour wine but never felt hovered over. A great evening! Easy to recommend and easy to return.
See you again.
So happy to eat here every time! Really tasty, fresh, local ingredients that are sumptuously prepared. For any Fable fans out there, the meal & atmosphere is comparable. The meal is expensive, but the quality is outstanding and from what I've heard from both waiters and kitchen staff is that the folks working at The Oakwood are paid and treated well, which is really important to me beyond just amazing food. Perhaps that's WHY the food is amazing! ;)
This was our second visit. Had to go back and have that Kale and Brussel Sprout salad.
So delicious. Chantelle was our server. She was so helpful and really good at doing her job. She took the time to describe the various dishes. We appreciated her postive attitude and attention to our requests. I have to say the staff at the Oakwood really make the experience a success.
The dishes, though small, are well prepared and tasty. They have a good selection of wine and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. Great restaurant to have in our neighbourhood!
Great service from the start. Friendly staff. Our favorite was the gnocchi and scallop chips.
Nice and quiet when we got there for 6pm but was starting to fill up and get lively on our way out.
We were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary, the wood anniversary, get it??!! A nice touch from the restaurant was a complimentary dessert to share.
The food was amazing. I could eat the warm kale salad every day, and the gnocchi is also a favourite. We brought our young kids, which I would discourage people from doing as the tapas-style means not everything comes at once and the experience takes longer than it would at a family restaurant. There is also no official children's menu, although they very kindly offered to make the kids noodles with cheese. My children liked the salmon, poutine (maple-soaked brisket, wow!) and the Brussels sprouts in the salad, but were ready to leave before the adults were! The food is outstanding. Next time, my spouse and I will go by ourselves!
Was really looking forward to this meal after the restaurant was recommended by a good friend. Unfortunately all our dishes were super salty which hid the flavor of the food. The kale salad would be divine without so much saltiness. The salmon dish was by far the best - a good plate. The burrata salad should not be so watery - I know burrata is watery but on a plate you do not need to include so much juice.
Went for a birthday dinner and it didn't disappoint. The food was very good, the service was excellent and the ambiance pleasant. We ordered 3 dishes for 2 people and it was more than enough. The warm kale salad was perfection and my favourite of the three. The grilled squid dish was very nice too - perfectly grilled squid served on a beautifully crusty croquette and luxurious potato puree with a delicious gremolata. The only off note was the pepperoni ragu which, for me, overpowered the other flavours. Still it was a beautiful dish and I would order it again. I found the miso and fennel pork belly dish less enjoyable. There were some nice components on the plate but inconsistency in the pork - some pieces dry and almost stringy, others quite fatty. The pickled cabbage and compressed pears were nice accompaniments and the caramelized onion puree was rich and flavourful. It was the last dish and we were already quite full so that may be part of the reason we didn't enjoy it as much as the others. Overall the meal was very good and I'm looking forward to visiting The Oakwood again and sampling new dishes.
Experience was good; we enjoyed the share plates / tapas style. The albacore tuna salad was really good; I would definitely order this one again. The spaghetti was unique but not my favourite; I would probably order something else next time! The pork belly was pretty good too, however nothing too special either. Overall, we liked the atmosphere and the food was definitely worth trying.
Foodies on vacation in Vancouver ... we really enjoyed our meal. Warm kale salad & spaghetti with mushrooms were standout faves. (Don't be fooled by "spaghetti," this ain't your mama's red ragu, the food here is inventive & more than a little tasty.). Natalie, our server, was fun & informative & the wine list, while not extensive, had some very nice (if expensive) choices. Hope it's still here next time we come back!
This was such a great find while on our visit to Vancouver! Ambiance, food, drink and clientele were spot on. We tried the scallop fritters, buffalo mozzarella, polenta and octopus dishes and each one was so unique! I think my favorite was the polenta but they all were tasty. If we had enough room we would have eaten the desserts but even though the food is tapas style, it was still filling!
Food was edible but none of it was something I'd order again. The tuna had no taste, my friend called it cardboard. The poutine sauce was too sweet. The scallop chips taste like bagged fish chips and came with a lemon sauce that was so lemony I couldn't understand why. The pork belly was good, but there was something with jalapeno in it that just hit you so hard and didn't fit in with the dish. Cute idea and cute restaurant, but food was a miss for me.
