The Oakwood Canadian Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This place is totally overrated online! It was very loud so much so that no conversation was possible at all. As far as the food goes I found every dish very strong flavors, e.g. pickled grapes and cheese with bacon fries. There were too many extreme flavors, nothing came as it tastes (e.g. potatoes or beets as everything had some type of coating). I found that the plates were very small to share. The place was trying to be something hip and special but it's not. I would definitely not recommend it for children, it's not child friendly at all.
The only positive point I can make is the staff who was friendly and smiling. The food took way too long to be prepared but that's also a sign that's fresh (although you could argue that on some of the dishes we had).
Great food as always! The NYE service was a spottier compared to the usual team and itfelt as though we were being rushed to leave. Several time our plates were cleared and replaced with the next course when were were barely done the previous course. However, food and drinks were delicious like always.
Came to Oakwood upon several recommendations from close friends and family. The food and experience lived up to the expectation: the food is innovative and gourmet, the service is very friendly and unassuming. Great wine selection. Overall, a fantastic night out with friends!
The Oakwood is a fun find in Kits. My wife and I went for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. The service was excellent. The food was good, though portion sizes left something to be desired. I realize these are meant to be share plates and, given our server's recommendation for 3-4 plates for two people, we opted for four. The flavours were generally great (the warm kale salad is phenomenal) but in some cases there was little more than a few bites for each of us. Relatedly, I also found the plating to be a bit deceptive. That is, there were times when it looked like there was more of the item ordered than there was (the burrata being the best example of this). Again, the food is excellent but we were certainly still hungry after these four small share plates. Will we return? Very likely. Great spot for tapas and an excellent drink list.
Came here for a staff Christmas dinner, all the servers were super friendly and the food was really good (particularly the kale salad, and lamb belly > pork belly by far). It's a lovely warm spot to pop into, especially as it's freezing cold outside at the moment. Only knock is it is quite loud, so it's hard to carry a conversation. But super cozy, food is delish, and quite reasonably priced for sharing.
The Oakwood is one of mine and my boyfriend's favorite brunch spots. It was his Birthday this week and I decided to take him there for dinner. The food was so incredible--really unique flavors and delicious, good quality ingredients--and we loved their recommended style of sharing dishes so that we could both try a variety. The ambiance was very cozy, and the staff was super friendly and down-to-earth. We were gifted a free dessert which was such a nice and unexpected surprise, and it was soooo good (corncake with pear chunks and salted caramel sauce, seriously to die for). Will definitely be back again soon and would highly recommend!
Food is good and value is pretty good.
However, the waitress who served us is very bad. Very rude when we have questions about the dinner menu. Very impatient server when the restaurant is not even busy. She was eating in the kitchen for over 5 minutes while we are waiting for her to take our orders. Very horrible service and I will not return to this place ever again.
Honestly amazing! My boyfriend and I went for our first Oakwood dinner date (as we had done brunch together, but he had never been to dinner there), and everything from the service to the food was bar none for the price point. We had the burrata, kale, spaghetti, and salmon in October 2017 (which is a relevant detail considering that the menu is seasonal). Everything and anything on the menu is fantastic, but I would highly recommend the warm kale salad, which is probably my favourite item on the menu regardless of the season, any of their home-made pastas, and short ribs. You will not regret visiting this gem in the city of a myriad of delicious food!
The only thing that was off was the timing on the service. Two of three meals came out well before the third. This meant that the first two meals were almost finished by the time the third meal came out. Timing could have been better. Great restaurant however, with very good food.
Happy place with a low key decor.
Good, happy, professional waiters, prompt and unobstrussive.
Exquisit dishes, each one more than the other, different flavours and aromas, beautifully presented. Great Chef. It was a very nice experience for us. Perhaps music a bit lower....
Went with another couple..ordered two each of three dishes which worked really well for us. Food came out with perfect timing and the helpings were well sized. Old world wine list short but adequate. We had great service, water glasses always full, never had to pour wine but never felt hovered over. A great evening! Easy to recommend and easy to return.
See you again.
So happy to eat here every time! Really tasty, fresh, local ingredients that are sumptuously prepared. For any Fable fans out there, the meal & atmosphere is comparable. The meal is expensive, but the quality is outstanding and from what I've heard from both waiters and kitchen staff is that the folks working at The Oakwood are paid and treated well, which is really important to me beyond just amazing food. Perhaps that's WHY the food is amazing! ;)
This was our second visit. Had to go back and have that Kale and Brussel Sprout salad.
So delicious. Chantelle was our server. She was so helpful and really good at doing her job. She took the time to describe the various dishes. We appreciated her postive attitude and attention to our requests. I have to say the staff at the Oakwood really make the experience a success.
The dishes, though small, are well prepared and tasty. They have a good selection of wine and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. Great restaurant to have in our neighbourhood!
Great service from the start. Friendly staff. Our favorite was the gnocchi and scallop chips.
Nice and quiet when we got there for 6pm but was starting to fill up and get lively on our way out.
We were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary, the wood anniversary, get it??!! A nice touch from the restaurant was a complimentary dessert to share.
The food was amazing. I could eat the warm kale salad every day, and the gnocchi is also a favourite. We brought our young kids, which I would discourage people from doing as the tapas-style means not everything comes at once and the experience takes longer than it would at a family restaurant. There is also no official children's menu, although they very kindly offered to make the kids noodles with cheese. My children liked the salmon, poutine (maple-soaked brisket, wow!) and the Brussels sprouts in the salad, but were ready to leave before the adults were! The food is outstanding. Next time, my spouse and I will go by ourselves!
Was really looking forward to this meal after the restaurant was recommended by a good friend. Unfortunately all our dishes were super salty which hid the flavor of the food. The kale salad would be divine without so much saltiness. The salmon dish was by far the best - a good plate. The burrata salad should not be so watery - I know burrata is watery but on a plate you do not need to include so much juice.
