The Oakwood Canadian Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Good not great. Wouldn't recommend it but wouldn't turn down a happy hour invite here. Don't recommend the gnocchi. It's more like a tater tot. The service was good and removed it though. Overall, would say skip unless you need a decent bite while in the area.
This is our local spot and we dine here about once a month. It's warm, inviting, and the dishes are always creative. The service has been attentive and friendly for years. The *one* warning I would give to first-time diners is that this is Canadian comfort food; therefore, it suits the winter and cold weather more than the summer and warm weather. It's one of the coziest restaurants around!
This is an excellent restaurant!! The local food was delicious, creative and offered a variety of options that met our vegetarian and fish loving family of six. From the poutine to the kale salad to the salmon, the food was delicious! The staff were attentive and personable. Two unique positive attributes: this was the first restaurant which designs a menu intended for sharing that gives you serving utensils for the sharing! This is also the first time that I have been presented with a bill in an artful piece of tree.
We went as a party of 7. Firstly the positives, they were very helpful arranging our table as there was nothing available online, we had a good table and we were able to talk properly, the restaurant was not too loud. The food was delicious.
The negatives, it is not stated on the website that this is a tapas bar, it says that the meals are intended for sharing, you would think this would mean that they would be big plates, quite the opposite. We all went in expecting to pay for our own meals, but we were pushed into ordering 13 courses between 7 of us, and throughout the meal, I was asked repeatedly if we wanted more food, despite having plates yet to come and already being overwhelmed with the amount (not of the food, but of the cost). We repeatedly said no, and were asked again and again. Each plate is TINY, coupe of bites each for a 25 dollar plate is not good value. We kept telling the waitress that we were fine, we didn't need more dishes, or drinks for that matter (the wine was extortionate, 50 for a basic bottle). In the end the bill came to 350 dollars despite only havig 1 bottle of wine at the table. Unfortunately, we would not return or recommend.
Still glad to have the Oakwood in the neighbourhood as it continues to be reliable with good food and service. My friend had not been here before and enjoyed his meal very much.
The roasted kale/cauliflower/brussel sprout salad remains a favourite and both the burger and salmon entres were great. Pretty good wine list and the Poplar Grove merlot was a great additon to our meal. Sorry there was no room for dessert.....
Loved the tuna dish as well as the warm kale salad.
Prefer a little less dressing on each but both were delicious.
Not crazy about the crackling and dip or the dish with the dried beetroot[?] and cheese
Our servers were friendly and attentive.
Thanks for a lovely experience,my second and my daughter's umpteenth!
I will return soon.
The food has gone down hill. The presentation needs to be addressed, looks very amateur.
The share plates should be smaller (price reduced)so they don't look like large mounds of goop. Less sauce, less mixing of flavors. The burger is good still, the old standby kale salad had too much dressing.
Our server was good until at the end of the meal, she just disappeared..... helloooooo
Service was great and ambience was nice! Our server was very accommodating, and even offered beer tasting samples for my friend's who couldn't decide on a beverage based on the extended drinks' menu.
Now about the food..... Between a group of 4, we ordered 5 dishes, as the recommended number of dishes by our server. This was a decent size, and we were not overly full. We ordered the burrata, lamb, salmon, gnocchi, and poutine. All were decent, but sizes were incredibly small. The Burrata came in a small sized portion with some beets and tomato- I'm a huge fan of bread / crackers alongside my burrata, so this was a bit of a disappointment. The lamb was interestingly deep fried; came with two tasty sauces, that made this quite enjoyable. The gnocchi was fairly unique; I usually enjoy my gnocchi a bit more pan fried (ie crunchy outside), which is what I would have expected, given the description on the menu, but instead, I would describe the actual texture as more "roasted potatoes" -ish. It came in a super cheesy sauce, that was thick and filling- likely what made the gnocchi on the softer side. The poutine and salmon were standard and tasted fine. Overall food was decent. Would I go back to try the 5-or-so other items (sarcasm here, reflecting the fact that the menu is quite small!). Maybe.
Definitely would recommend people to try it out for themselves before judging the restaurant based on my comments!
I've heard of this place so many times, finally I got a chance came to the neighborhood to try, and it all worth it! Very nice food and atmosphere to dine in! Service seemed so rush, we were sitting on the patio, it wasn't that busy but the server was like running away from us!
We came to this restaurant to celebrate an engagement. I couldn't be happier. The place is amazing and the service is top notch. The servers were extremely knowledgeable about the food they're serving and recommended dishes to try as the place is all about sharing tapas. The place is amazing and the atmosphere is quite relaxing.
I had been here for brunch before & was keen to try dinner. Our server was excellent, the food was great value & delicious but dessert was the star. The menu isn't huge but there's a good selection & a fantastic drinks menu! It was pretty noisy when we first arrived with tables either side of us shouting their conversations.
Wonderful experience. A friend and I were in town for a night and wanted to go out for drinks and a bite to eat, and this was the perfect place to do so. Friendly service, AMAZING warm kale salad, and tasty drinks. We're both still talking about how great it was.
Fabulous warm kale salad - wonderful for sharing as a starter. Healthy and delicious. I also enjoyed the Humboldt squid very much. Service was prompt, warm and friendly although, I have to confess that I got a little tired of being asked by several different people several times how much was I enjoying my food - can get a tad intrusive when overdone unfortunately. Loved the welcoming fireplace at the back of the room. Nice ambience
