The Oakwood Canadian Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Dinner with a group of visiting friends. Shared almost all items in the 'share-plate' style menu. Pulled pork on little pancakes (like tiny tacos) were fantastic. We ordered more. Everything we had was worth going back for. Cool space, nice booth for our group of 8 + baby.
Great time, try it if you haven't.
Also, been for brunch twice, just a worthwhile.
Really enjoyed the food and energy. Didn't like being told we had to be gone at a certain time. I was extremely impressed that the waiter and chef went out of their way to accommodate my strick diet. Kudos! Everyone enjoyed their meals, my duck was amazing.
We will go back and try other dishes. We had the poutine, burger, asapagus and mussels. Great restaurant, good staff and good service. My only reason for 4 stars is that its pretty noisy inside and hard to hold a conversation with the person across from you. We will be going back.
3 girls night out. We were blown away by the food (I'm still drooling at the thought of the rabbit rillette topped with shaved foie gras), the service, atmosphere... I am just sorry I didn't discover this place when I lived walking distance from here. Vancouver's best kept secret. I will be back every time I come to Vancouver.
I knew it is a brunch spot which is been one of my staples for a long time. I also just tried it for dinner the food in the evening is just as amazing as brunch and the drink list is superb. I really enjoyed the group drinks that you could get that coming in a Crystal bottle it's a lot of fun and they're really tasty
My hairdresser recommended the restaurant for me to take my partner out for his 50th bday celebration. The food was excellent especially the warm Kale salad. I will be returning to try the rest of the dishes especially the Poutine. The restaurant was a bit noisy. The servers were very helpful. Again great place. Must try for first timers!
My boyfriend and I went one day after work and we ordered a warm kale salad, asparagus dish, steak and duck. The food is definitely for sharing and not as personalized meals. The steak was very well prepared, it was my boyfriends favourite. I enjoyed the kale salad and asparagus dish. The waiter was great and provided awesome service. I would definitely recommend this place!
We enjoyed the varied combinations of food, but the wine list consisted of mostly wines from the Okanagan.
We do not mind Canadian wines, but to only feature 1 region is a small vision. There are several top quality wines from Vancouver Island that would pair easily with the mostly meat dishes at Oakwood.
A good experience overall, but the duck breast was a disappointment. Tough and not seasoned properly. It felt like an after thought.
My first time at the Oakwood Bistro was initiated by a gift certificate from the parent's of the high school boys basketball team I coach. I brought a very good friend with me to try it out and we both loved it. Everything was amazing - the food, the wine, the service, and the ambience. Our server David was great at providing suggestions on food and wine choices, and his knowledge of the menu was fantastic. Seeing the smile on my lady friend's face made everything worthwhile. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I will be coming back for sure!
The restaurant and staff were lovely. The food was absolutely great - the flavor combinations were unbelievable. The only thing is they give you tiny portions, so i was still hungry after eating my main course. It's too pricy to give such small portions, as I can't really order 2 expensive main course dishes on a budget. The plates are too small to share and are clearly meant for individual consumption. Great food, just don't be so stingy. $22 for sablefish and I literally got a plate with 2 bites of fish on it.
Our four day visit to Vancouver included much fresh and locally-sourced food. On our final day, the bar was set high for our last stop to Oakwood Bistro. Entering the restaurant from a rare sunny day, the interior seemed a bit gloomy. Once the candles were lit, however, things immediately brightened up with two cocktails --the house-made tonic provides balance to gin, the craft beer selection is small but well-curated. With one serious allergy each--shellfish and gluten--we were impressed and gratified with the grace and aplomb with which they adjusted our plates. The warm kale salad is truly excellent, and every bite of the sablefish dish was balanced and flavourful. The seared albacore melted in our mouths. As for dessert, who knew that grenadine rhubarb gel is absolutely perfect with apples and dolce du leche ice cream? Loved it. Great service that was timely, professional, and friendly. Highly recommended.
Hello - The only issue we had was the initial seating. I had made a reservation for 8PM. However, we had to wait in waiting area for about 20min before we could sit down at our seats. I suppose it's up to the server to ensure that the party sitting at our table before us finish up in time? Just an observation.
Otherwise, our server was great! Very attentive and quick.
Four of us sat at the communal table which was fun, with enough space between diners to give some privacy. Lots of smaller tables and booths.
The duck, sablefish, burrata salad and rigatoni were all absolutely delicious. Wow!
Bread would have been great for the wonderful sauces but we did not see any around.
Weak points were the desserts; the pistachio cake tasted only of marzipan and the pumpkin mousse was not a favourite either.
Stick with the savoury dishes... So many to try and all beautifully and creatively plated.
Attentive service and nice lighting. Very popular so reserve ahead!
Had my birthday dinner with my son and husband. We all have completely different taste in food but found something delicious for everyone. Mussels, warm kale salad ( to die for:) and a burger. Left completely satisfied with our table by the Fire place, noise level buzzing but quiet enough to have conversation, lovely wait staff and amazing food. Love that you are walking distance from our home in Kits!
First time at Oakwood and the place was hopping on Thursday night. Excellent booth at the fireplace and not too hot. Waiter(s) were superb and described all the plates to us. We each had something different from the Dine Out menu and we declared them all excellent. I stepped it up with the duck and delicious. Wine choices were good as well. I could see they had the long common share table which I would not care for. Obvious young couples coming in as two high chairs at the common table. Going out for a nice evening of good food I would not want to be flanked on my right by two high chairs, but it might not bother anyone else. Definitely anxious to go back.
Loved the ambiance and service at the Oakwood but the food lacked compared to previous visits there. The salad was overdressed and lacking in flavor. Less than notable taste onthe main - bbq pork and dessert for someone with gluten allergies was a bowl of apples that o could have flavoured better at home. I love th Oakwood and hope that this one experience will not continue to be a trend
We went there to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday during DineOutVancouver. The food was tasty, you could tell the quality was better than your average restaurant. The presentation was also very fine dining-like. The people inside gave off a very classy vibe which I absolutely loved. Staff was friendly and professional and the food came very fast. The tables were a bit too close together, but not a big deal. Overall a lovely dining experience, a bit on the pricey side but that's to be expected. Would definitely go back; can't wait to try out their brunch!
2 of my friends said this place is really good so I decided to try it out during dine out vancouver. the price ($28) is worth it but the food wasn't up to par as i expected. The onion soup was very salty. The sable fish was good size and the potate croqutte made it filling. The pistaccio dessert was great except the cake part of it was not moist and kind of hard. Overall I'm glad I came here so I can check off my list but probably won't be back again.
My partner and I was unsure whether going for Dine out Vancouver at Oakwood gives the restaurant a fair review of this place. Food was average, nothing special and the dessert was put together in a very sloppy manner (pre-made in little glass jars, there was not much thought to the presentation to it - I believe Oakwood can do much better). However, would re-visit to try their actual normal menu. Additonally, I booked this restaurant through Opentable noting that it was my bf's birthday. No mention from the staff at all when we got there and not even a lit candle was given on his dessert. A huge disappointment!!
I really like the regular menu and dining experience at this restaurant. BUT when I had dinner there jan 14, it was the "dine out vancouver" menu. Didn't much care for that. The pork neck was done correctly I think, but I didn't care for it. The sauce covered the fat that is inherent to this and I couldn't easily cut it out cause I couldn't see it. The meat part was ok, but nothing really special. I did like the wine sampler, Haven't come across that before and that was interesting! Much prefer the regular menu and the experience that goes with that.
My check boxes above are for the regular menu.
We were really happy to get a reservation on New Years. It was a great atmosphere and the service was outstanding. The food was not at their normal standard. It was not hot. It was a prix fix menu so I guess this is normal. We will be back for their normal menu but not for a prix fix. Also, they sent us home with a morning breakfast package which I thought was great!!!
We can't say enough about how great the Oakwood Canadian Bistro treated us on a recent New Years Eve when we were coming from afar and were hung up the traffic at the US:Canadian border and feared that we would lose our cherished reservation. Although they couldn't hold up the rest of the seatings' initiation of the nights special menu, they were absolutely understanding and welcoming when we showed up late, seated us immediately, poured the Champagne and started us in on the second course of an absolutely scrumptious dinner that completely erased all the evening's stress. All that and, as a New Years greeting for everyone in the restaurant, provided us with a New Years Day morning breakfast "kit"! We consider the Oakwood the epitome of both cuisine and service.
Warm & sophisticated;)
The Oakwood created a wonderful New Years Menu. The four course meal featured seasonal specialities including an amuse bouche platter, scallop appetizer, rib eye main & the best home made brown butter ice cream. We had a table by the fireplace & it was beautiful. Kelsey the bartender concocts winter cocktails that are so delicious & inventive. The other staff, Elle, both Dave's, Candace, and Lucy will ensure your evening is special. This is a lovely space with scrumptious & heart warming food by the chef Ryan Murphy
We had a wonderful new years tasting menu experience. The staff was caring and attentive. My wife has a gluten sensitivity and the chef was able to accomadate her with a delicious kale salad as an appetizer substitution. The prime rib was perfectly cooked for a memorable main dish. We really appreciated our servers attention and the present of a wrapped breakfast to take home as a surprise gift. We will definitely return to this neighborhood gem.
I made a reservation for dinner on New Years Eve. We started with some delicious cocktails at the bar before making our way to the table. There was a pre-fixe menu that night and everything was delicious and they were able to accommodate my husband's nut allergy with no issues. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back!
I booked The Oakwood Canadian Bistro for NYE dinner with my parents. We got a table for the 6 - 8 p.m. dinning with a 4 menu dinner. The service and ambiance was very great. The time slot of two hours before the next Group arrives for the dinner was a absolutley to short. The food was delecious but our Steak and mushed potatoes were cold when we got the plate.
