Dinner reservations are for The Oak Room dining experience and it's menu. We do not accept reservations for our Tavern. The Tavern menu and seating are first come first served basis. During lunch we do seat in both spaces and Oak Room seating may be requested. The Historic Granville Inn is a nationally registered historic landmark & full service hotel. Established in 1924, it exemplifies the Arts & Crafts movement. Prominent architect Frank Packard included native sandstone, richly stained oak paneling, & English cottage influences. The contemporary American menu features seasonal ingredients & classic cooking techniques. Executive Chef Chad Lavely utilizes local produce, hand-cut steaks, seafood, artisan cheese , hand-crafted bread & house made desserts. The Granville Inn has two immediately adjacent private parking lots. Our third private lot is just East of The College Town House, at the corner of Broadway and Granger. On Valentine's Day my wife and I decided to return to the Granville Inn. Our last visit was around Christmas a couple of years ago and was a top three meal all-time. At that time, Swordfish was available on a bed of mango relish. I asked the waiter and he said that must have been a special because they have not had that on the menu in a long time. No problem, I loved the rabbit as well.
Back to Valentine's Day, the fireplace seating was awesome. The food was not that good for the price and the Rabbit Pot pie was much more like an appetizer. I was very disappointed in the portion size of that meal. My wife told me on the way home that we would probably not be returning. Valentine's Day disappointments are not good.
Our Server, Wendy was terrific (as always). The salmon was fantastic! The Filet was fantastic! The Butternut Squash was Fantastic! It is our go to place for a nice meal with friends. Wonderful atmosphere with a great clientele. We will, of course, be back. Thank you! Janis and Dave
It was amazing, brought my date there and she loved it. I especially love the request that was fulfilled, they went above and beyond with it. Food was delicious and if I could I'd hire one of the chefs who made my omelet to just cook me lunch all the time. Service was quick and helpful.
Excellent experience. Enjoyed the ambience. Top-notch service. Staff was extremely attentive. A single gripe worth noting - all three ordered the same meal - 8oz filets but the cuts were significantly different. Mine was 3/4 inch thick and a little over cooked when ordered medium as a result. On the other end of the scale, friend’s was the traditional (as expected) 1 1/2 inch cut cooked perfectly. The third was somewhere in between. Could have been more consistent. Will definitely return though.
Made a 10 pm res thru Open Table and then called the Inn to confirm. Was told that everything was good and they were looking forward to seeing us. It was New Year’s Eve. When we got there, we were disappointed to know that the bar closed at 10. We’re we’re allowed one round and we’re rushes at that. Further, there was no more bread and a few of the dinners and desserts were gone. Waitress was trying to make the best of it but definitely didn’t work too hard to make us feel welcome. We were not comped anything and no manager came by to apologize. We used gift certificates that were miscalculated on our bill and had to be done twice. Overall, I would have preferred to have been turned down on our reservation in advance than to have wasted our $$ on a bad experience. Very disappointed in what is supposed to be an upscale dining.
Made reservations and were seated in a side room which had no ambiance at all. If when making reservations in advance they told us it would be in a sterile side room that looked like it was at the Holiday Inn, we would have had a chance to make reservations elsewhere. I would and will caution everyone on making reservations at this restaurant. Power of the pen and the internet!
Everything was very nice except that the tables are just a tad too close in the back dining room. You can def hear neighboring conversations. We had an elderly couple arguing next to us and it was very awkward. Other than that, our food and service were very good.
The service was fine, the food was good, but I had requested a seat near the fireplace for the ambience. Unfortunately they sat us by a fireplace that wasn't working !! I mentioned the fireplace request to the Waitress and was informed of a current issue with it. Unfortunately when we left, the fireplace on the other side of the restaurant, was working....not sure why our request wasn't understood that we wanted to sit by a FIRE not just a FIREPLACE!!
Loved the ambiance of the restaurant , but the food was not good. Also thought it was odd they charged for vegetable substitutions. Paid extra for asparagus and it was awful- mushy. Four of us dined and there was not one good dish between us.
Next time - I would go to the bar to enjoy the room but eat somewhere else!
I ordered the special the baked cod for $31 and it was delicious! A little small in the serving size. Julienne asparagus and carrots, I think there were a total of 2 stalks and 1 carrot on the plate. Our issue was with the special my husband ordered. A 10 oz ribeye with mashed potatoes, asparagus and 2 large prawn, for what we both thought was $28. Well his steak was over cooked but he ate it anyway. However, when we get the bill his was $48! Not worth that price for sure. Other than that huge disappointment, the place is beautiful and the service was impeccable!
It is a long drive for us so it has been several years since we have been here. We were pleasantly surprised to see how great it looks now. We were told that the university purchased the property and put quite a bit of money into it. It is definitely a one of a kind inn.
Possibly my wife and I's favorite place. The chef provided shrimp as large as one might find anywhere for my wife's appetizer. I had the quail with cheezy grits as an appetizer (satisfying my lifestyle whilst living in Georgia). For dinner, my wife had succulent steak diane and I had Chilean seabass with asparagus and the chef's sauce. We go to the Granville Inn several times a year just to surround ourselves with the peace and serenity the Inn brings to any event. The Granville Inn will add you to a mailer which details special events they host. Before moving to the area permanently we booked a room for an anniversary. Staying here is a special time and leaves you with memories. For our upcoming anniversary, I just booked a Swedish massage for my wife and me at the Newkirk Spa, just next door.
If you are visiting from outside town the Granville Inn is owned by Denison University and also has a golf package available. It is located downtown so just blocks to a variety of shops and also Denison's campus.
Relaxing, smart and either casual or fancy, the Granville Inn provides an unforgettable experience. I have already told several friends and colleagues about the most recent experience dining here.
My wife and have spent many years dining at this inn in our wedding anniversary and other special occasions but stopped some years prior to the change in ownership due to poor poor menu options. We’re happy to say it’s back on the list. We enjoyed brunch before heading to Timbuk to cut our Christmas tree and the food and service were excellent. Can’t wait to return.
I gifted a dinner Saturday night for my daughter and son in law. It was a very busy evening with many holiday activities going on in the town, but the service that evening was unexcusable. After a lengthy wait to be acknowledged once seated, and again another to receive the ordered calamari and French soup appetizer, the dinner order was never placed by the server and she was nowhere to be found after about a half hour wait AFTER the appetizers were finished. When she finally returned to the table , again about a half hour after the appetizers were done to inquire how her guests were doing, there were no dinner salads or dinners for that matter. She stated that she simply forgot to put their dinner orders in and because the kitchen was so busy, it would be about another 20-30 minutes for their dinner orders. At that point , my dtr and son in law told her the dinner orders could be cancelled, because they had to leave due to babysitting. No manager ever came to the table. No apologies. No compensation. It is a beautiful restaurant, but plan to spend the evening if their busy. They said the food was fine.
We were a little disappointed to have been seated in a secondary room not one of the nicer dining rooms. We had prompt service at first but after our soup was finished we probably waited 10-20 minutes for our main course. there was no apology for the wait. The food was good and nicely presented. Steak was great but the sides were just so-so. All-in-all, a good time except for the slowness of the meal arriving. I will say it was a busy night at the restaurant but folks at tables around us received their food before we did even though we ordered before them.
Great location and nice building, but the food was a very weak showing (the ravioli was swimming in a vaguely burnt butter sauce; the duck was draped over overly salted potato hash). Ultimately, the price was simply too high compared to far finer dining establishments within driving distance. I understand that this restaurant is in business by and for Denison, but I would expect a university of that caliber to really invest in inventive and reliable chefs and kitchen staff.
Went for Thanksgiving. Lovely place. BEAUTIFUL display of food. Very sweet server. But we were given a table with the sun laser beaming us in the face. (No window covering to lower) Had to ask to be moved. Also was surprised that hot foods were not hot. Gravy turkey potatoes stuffing were all lukewarm. At home I would have microwaved it to heat up! For the price would have expected hot food to be hot.
