This restaurant is a hidden gem, set in the beautiful town of Avon, CT. Building upon a tradition of New England charm, The North House team offers a wonderful, inviting atmosphere of fabulous food and personal service.
Our waiter, John, became an instant favorite with my guests and provided great recommendations and a thorough execution of great service. Executive Chef April Gibson was delighted to hear our favorable comments about the meals we enjoyed. The brussels sprouts are incredible!
I have traveled to may parts of the world and dined in many, many different cultures. I must say that our experience at The North House rates "in our top ten".
I would encourage anyone with a desire for a unique dining experience to visit soon!
It was our anniversary and they were so good to us...gave us free champagne and even personalized our menus by saying happy anniversary!!!!felt very special tonight
On a day advertised as oysters all day, they had none by 5:30 PM, which was the only reason that we went to the restaurant. Very much a bait and switch and we are unlikely to go back.
Very nice evening, food was great. Service was very good, waiter's name John
nice environment but the food was just ok and the service less than stellar. However we will go back to give it a second chance. Stonington scollops were outstanding but the combinations of flavor and color were below average
It was my daughters Birthday. they gave us a private room it was great.
Excellent experience! We frequently go here and we love the food, as well as the service. Beth and Brendon are wonderful and take care of our every need. The manager, Dylan, is amazing and always willing to do whatever it takes to make your visit the best! We absolutely love the North House!
We went for lunch and sat at high top booth. Service was attentive. Waitress was accommodating and service was prompt. I ordered off the prix fix menu which included and app, entree and dessert. Nice variety all food was good with ample portions. We would definitely go back.
Pleasant and friendly service both in the bar and in the restaurant. We enjoyed both the beef Wellington and short ribs. Surprised by the personalized menu for our anniversary.
I brought my aunt and mom here for dinner and they both loved it. As sisters will do, they each ordered different entrees and shared both so they could try both. One ordered the ribeye and one ordered the lamb. They were both very happy with both meals. My salad with shrimp was delicious also. The service here was terrific as well, as should be expected of a restaurant of this caliber.
The dining room was “cold and I inviting”. It was very noisy because there is nothing to absorb the noise. It was not crowded and it was only conversation.
Amazing service and they even made a special menu for our anniversary!
Traditional American cooking, done elegantly and with some flair. Great environment-- we had a private room for 8 people on a family reunion. Leisurely, exceptional service, very New England and historic. A great choice for business meeting, family get to gether, or romantic dinner.
Great service and great food! Kristen our server was excellent ! Very personable and attentive. The food was fantastic. Had the brussel sprouts (wow!), the polenta, lobster roll, salad plus it was 1/2 price on bottles of wine. Sat in the tavern which is really nice. Excellent experience!
Unfortunately we were celebrating my birthday and we had the worst possible server ever. Her name was Beth and for an upscale restaurant she was awful. The food and presentation was very good but the prices were way too high for what you get, perhaps if the service was impeccable I could justify the cost and experience!!!!!
Second time here and loved it. This time dined in the lounge for a more casual and “bright” atmosphere. Comfy booth, yummy comfort food, great cocktails. Almost makes me wish I lived in Connecticut!
Lovely view on patio outside charming historic inn. Desserts were divine!
My parents were visiting from FL, so we took them to the North House for their 42nd Wedding Anniversary. We all had a great dinner!! The food was great, the service was great, and the environment was unbeatable. Highly recommend! :)
My husband and I had dinner at the North House in Avon, Connecticut on Sunday, June 30, 2019. The food was high quality, nicely prepared and delicious. The portions were also quite generous. My husband had the rib eye steak, which he really enjoyed, and I had the trout with clam chowder, which was quite good. We also were able to take advantage of the happy hour with very reasonably priced drinks and appetizers, including fried calamari, which was delicious. The happy hour was great because we were able to sit in the dining room and have dinner and did not have to sit in the bar to take advantage of it.
. . .
The overall service was excellent with our waitress being very friendly, polite, attentive and efficient. The atmosphere at the restaurant was very relaxing with nice comfortable seating in a booth. We recommend this restaurant and will definitely go back again.
No vegan options.
We had a fantastic meal (shrimp appetizer, salmon and trout main dishes) and Beth was a terrific server. They have a wonderful 47-page wine list. We were also pleasantly surprised to find ALL wines are half price on Thursdays! We will be back very soon!
We celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary, they printed a special menu which wished us a happy anniversary at he top. The waitstaff was patient and answered the many questions I had about the menu. My husband and I split a salad and each got an entree - filet mignon and the trout. The meals were excellent and well prepared. They comped our salad and dessert for our anniversary. We will definitely be back.
This was my first trip to North House which was outstanding. I was there with my best friend and, her husband celebrating her birthday. We sat in the Tavern which was just perfect. Our server, Amanda was outstanding, North House is very lucky to have Amanda as one of their servers. She answered any questions we had before we ordered our meal. Also, very impressed with the menu that Happy Birthday as the header. When I made the reservation on Open Table they asked what the occasion was. Very impressed how North House did that. Now, the food, excellent! I, along with my friends will definitely return to North House. Great Experience!
We went to the North House to celebrate our 51st anniversary. We were seated promptly at a small table with no view. The dining room was almost empty so I requested a larger table closer to the window. We were seated at a wobbly table for 4. I didn’t want to seem like a cranky old lady so I didn’t ask to be moved again. I ordered a ribeye steak for $36. It arrived with a few carrots and a small serving of roasted potatoes.
When I tried to cut the steak the wobbling table made it difficult to do so without spilling our drinks. The steak was tough and had a lot of gristle. At least half the steak was fatty and inedible. Our waiter was nice but not overly attentive. He didn’t seem concerned that I didn’t eat half my meal.
I complained to him about the table and he agreed it was wobbly but did not offer to reseat us.
Our bill came to $110.00. We only had coffee to drink a soup as an appetizer. I have had better steak at the Outback!
My wife said the ladies room only had two stalls. One had a broken lock. The walls were dirty and the rest room had not been painted in some time.
We will not return
We love it here. Prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays are the best by far! Expert, attentive staff. Printing our birthday person's name on the menu was a super cool surprise! Attention to deal, while being in a casual atmosphere is welcoming. Absolutely worth a visit.
This was my second visit to The North House. The setting is relaxed with that 1787 charm. The service was terrific and the food is always good. Bonus for 50% off all whiskeys and whiskys.
Everyone was so nice and helpful and made my elderly mother's visit a success. The waitress was charming and helpful. We were the only people eating outside and she went up and down the steps countless times. It was quiet on the patio area and as it's right next to the parking lot, it posed no mobility problems! Lunch was delicious, too

Had a great Father’s Day meal with the family. Food is always good and the menu always is changing. The building is unique inside and out. The only knock on this visit was it took a very long time to get drinks and bread, even on round 2. Overall, we love the north house.
Creative, delicious meal! We love the woodsmoke aroma and historic setting at the North House, and we are never disappointed with a meal there. We started with the Brussels sprout appetizer, which we could have kept eating all evening. I decided to try the scallops although I was not sure about the vanilla celery root purée-- they were fantastic! Husband's duck was perfectly cooked and equally creative, so we shared tastes quite a bit. This is one of our go-to restaurants for ourselves or when we want to treat guests.
Family dinner celebration was the best food we have had in several years... everything was extremely well crafted, innovative and very tasty. Perfect.
We had requested a booth and we were not given one . They need to have more on their tavern menu .
The restaurant buildings are historic and inviting, in a quirky way. John, our server, was very knowledgeable about the building, the menu, and the wine list. He was attentive at all times. And the food was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant who either lives in or is visiting that area of Connecticut.
Slow service especially if you have small children
Great meal. Excellent service. We were coming from a lacrosse camp and were a little concerned about being underdressed, but it was super casual in the bar area. Highly recommend
Service was excellent, our server Beth was excellent. Staff were all helpful, we were seated right on time. Only downside, food could have been warmer, food was medium warm should have been hot.
Other than that it was an enjoyable experience that we will repeat.
As usual the North House was excellent. The place is lovely but the food is exceptionnal.
Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and was a great ambiance for most of the meal. Once other groups start to fill in and the room becomes more crowded the noise level can grow very quickly. Also the lights seemed to dim and brighten sporadically which was slightly annoying. But very minor and not really a detractor from the meal.
Great service.. Our table was in a room off the bar.. Only draw back was the noise.. No carpet..or drapes to muffle the sound a bit..
the table we sat at was very warm even after we put with the curtain down. Shrimp were terrible and the new menu selection was awful. Sorry but really didn't like it.
