Valentine’s Day/birthday dinner. Dining out, sans children, and dressed to the nines is a RARE event. I had high hopes the food would be sensational. It was. And the wine pairing: perfect.
I had the steak and while the meat was great combined with French fries seemed strange. My suggestion would be to offer a baked potato. French fries seem to go more with a hamburger or lower quality food not a higher end meal.
My wife had the fish which only had lentils. The meal seemed incomplete without vegetables.
Overall we enjoyed our visit.
The entire evening was great...the food was excellent, the menu selections are unique, cooked and plated very well. The wine list is varied and affordable with some very nice labels to choose from. Desserts were well worth loosening the belt for. All in all...very enjoyable.
Wonderful food, friendly service, great view! We attended the Limberlost Art Tour and then had dinner at one of our favourite Muskoka restaurants. The Norseman has a good selection of game meat that is always a treat to eat. Their preparation of venison was perfect.
Unexpected first rate restaurant in rustic lodge setting in the middle of lake country, every bit as good as anything in major urban setting. Wonderful and unique dressing for salad nicoise, fresh pasta cooked perfectly al dente, absolutely delicious home made marinara sauce.
My husband said it was one of the best steaks he had ever had!
The Norseman Restaurant was one of the worst restaurants I have ever been too! The restaurant service was extremely slow and was told by the server there was one new chef in the kitchen and it was a Saturday night! When my husband and I finally were served we received undercooked Cornish Hens! The restaurant did apologize and asked us if we wanted anything else on the menu instead so my husband had beef and I had the pasta and unfortunately my pasta was again undercooked. In addition, there was no good view of the lake from inside the restaurant which was requested when the reservation was made which was disappointing as the restaurant calls themselves "a lakeside bistro" and the interior if the restaurant was outdated and smelled musty. The restaurant said also they could not make cappuccino as they ran out of coffee beans for the machine. I will definitely not be returning to this so called "fine dining" restaurant.
We have eaten at the Norseman a number of times especially when we want a great meal and a lovely setting. The restaurant has never disappointed us and the chef they have now is truly talented and the service we received was very good. If you are in or travelling through the Huntsville area I would highly recommend The Norseman.
Great little restaurant in a wooded area. Beautiful scenery, wish we came during the summer when their patio is open
Amazing!! Will definitely dine there again!!
Very good menu. The only restaurant in Huntsville (that we could find) that served game meat (venison). Barramundi (Australian fish) was also excellent.
We have dined several times, but on this occasion we were extremely disappointed with the entire experience. Slow service and unco operative staff and management.
They had zero interest in satisfying our requests and we actually decided to leave, and to go somewhere where our business was appreciated! It was early evening and not at all busy, so no excuses!
Delicious food from an interesting menu- something for everyone. Exceptional and attentive service from our server who has been there for over 14 years. Would definitely recommend.
My buddy and I were in Muskoka for the weekend to play some golf. I was looking for something nice for our first dinner. The reviews were mixed. It's in a remote place, but has a beautiful lakeside setting. It was quiet. The service was great. Very unique menu and the food was good. Would definitely recommend.
The ambiance is wonderful, an old lodge with a centre fireplace that radiates heat even on the coldest of nights. The ceasar was very tasty, shrimp cocktail was tastier than most, the roast beef came with Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravy to dip in and a good variety of vegetables all followed by creme brûlée that was a beautiful finishing touch to a lovely dinner.
Service was very good and the price was reasonable for the quality of food.
We brought my boyfriend's mom here for her birthday as the restaurant was recommended by some good friends - we were told the food was good. The food was good…the rest of the experience was meh.
First, upon entering, there was no maitre d or hostess at the front to greet us. None of the wait staff acknowledged our group. I had to grab the attention of a gentleman behind the bar to get us seated.
Once we were seated, our waitress was a bit over the top. She spoke to us like we were in kindergarten. Notably looked frazzled and got my boyfriend's drink order wrong twice.
The meal took a long time to get served. All the wait staff were apologetic for the wait and offered more bread.
The whole experience felt unorganized. At most establishments, there is one server assigned to a group of tables. We had at least three different servers come and ask us the same question and also had the bill brought to us on several occasions when it already had been paid. :S
As an aside - I felt bad for the table seated behind us. A group of 15 to 20. They had arrived before us and were just getting their apps served and we had already finished our mains.
I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and attribute this experience to having the regular trained wait staff being gone due to summer's end. The food was good, but the service was not great. We were expecting a great experience and it really wasn't…it was disappointing especially because we decided to celebrate a birthday here.
We found the Norseman on open table while staying in Huntsville. It was a nice option for us a little remote but great food. The vegetarian entree with the giant mushroom was great. My husband had the Australian barramundi. The atmosphere was fantastic what we kind of expected for Northern Ontario very rustic.
If you plan on traveling in Muskoka, you must have a meal at the Norsemen. It's a centennial house and was once owned by a Danish man... The food is amazing and the portions generous. We started with a smoked salmon Caesar salad and the green shrimp soup à la Thai, we were already seduced! Try their seafood special entrée if they have any at the time, you will get fresh and delicious seafood! My better half prefers red meat, he was very pleased with his Viking cut :-) Too full for desert, but we shared a great Chianti Classico all along and had a great moment! Get a spot on the patio as much as possible, the view is magnificent.
My friend and I had a spectacular meal at the Norsemen. Everything was delicious: apps, mains, and of course dessert.
We had the daily soup, garlic shrimp, t-bone steaks and lamb, all cooked perfectly, and presented artfully.
Although we didn't have much room for dessert we had it anyway....creme brulee and flourless chocolate cake, both fantastic!
Service was very friendly and attentive, everything we could ask for.
Will definitely return next time (and every time) we are in Muskoka.!!!
We made a reservation and it took roughly 45 minutes between courses. We weren't given updates until the end when we were already clearly irritated. What was even worse was that other people who arrived after us got their meals before us and they had ordered the same thing as us.
It was Valentine's Day so that may have attributed to a slower than normal service time however we were overall unimpressed.
Food was good though.
Valentine's Day Dinner
Prix fix menu, they ran out of appetizers so the chef sent out a salad that the waitress couldn't identify, 1/2 hour wait for our wine order, had to go to the bar to refresh our own drinks, two-hour wait for main course which was not good at all. 'Beef Bourguignon' was just an over-cooked flat-iron steak wrapped in pastry.
Politely expressed our disappointment to waitress, she was understanding but no apologies from management or kitchen.
Overheard other patrons complaining about the wait and quality of food as well.
Just an awful restaurant experience.
There were very few people in the restaurant, yet the service was slow. We poured all our own wine.
Cold over salted food served slowly with lots of attitude.
The food at Norsemen is excellently prepared. Much originality goes into the dishes.
the ceaser salad and squash soup were good. However my beef tenderloin was dry even though it was cooked to medium and the pork belly was tender but too salty.
Awesome food in an awesome setting. This chef is 5 star all the way, offering very creative interpretations of classic dishes and many with an authentic Canadaian flare. All served in an authentic muskoka cottage setting.....most unique and enjoyable!
WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT SUCH A GEM OF A DINING SPOT COULD BE FOUND UP MUSKOKA WAY IN COTTAGE COUNTRY. THREE OF US DINED THERE TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW AND EACH EVENING WAS A CULINARY DELIGHT. THEY HAVE AN AWESOME CHEF - THE WINE LIST IS MORE THAN ACCEPTABLE AND SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD. IT IS A LOVELY QUAINT INN, WITH INSIDE AS WELL AS OUTSIDE SEATING ON A SCREENED IN VERANDA.
WE WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND A VISIT FOR AN ENJOYABLE EVENING.
The Norsemen is a comfortable, rustic, restaurant overlooking a lake in the Lake of Bays area. The menu offers wild fish and game, such as duck, venison and bison; however, steak and lamb are also on the menu for those who are more conservative in their eating habits.
Service is very good, although our server didn't know what vegetables were in the vegetable medley that night!
This is a great special occasion restaurant as it's a bit pricey and has a limited menu.
We made a reservation for the Norsemen and we're really excited. When we arrived we were told by a server that someone would be right with us......then another told us the same........and another. One server actually spoke to us four times. Had the restaurant been jam packed this still would have been poor service.....but it wasn't even close! There were a few sparse tables inside and a few folks on the patio. It would have taken mere seconds to seat us, and give us menus and water glasses. At the fifteen minute mark, after numerous "we'll be right with yous", we left......sorely disappointed.
Service was hopelessly slow, despite this being a fairly small restaurant that was barely half full. Took nearly 2 hours to get our mains. Food was inconsistently cooked with some parts of the same dish cold and others hot. Staff as a whole appear to lack the skills and efficiency essential to running a restaurant. Would never go back.
A must if you visit Huntsville, great food and reasonable price. Will return for sure!
Enjoyed our dinner thoroughly! Already reserved again for this week.
We have been the The Norseman before and each time the food and its people wow us. Our most recent visit (August 9, 2014) was outstanding: Perfectly prepared lamb sirloin, delicious local, seasonal vegetables and impeccable service.
We fully enjoyed our evening meal at the Norsemen. We sat on the screened porch outside, among other happy diners. The buzz was good and the service was very good. Great for our special evening out. We will happily go back. Also it is close to our cottage which makes it easy to get to by boat, car or feet. Great!
Norseman was excellent. Expensive yes but well worth it. Our table enjoyed bison steak, scallops, duck and fresh fish, all expertly prepared and presented. Service was friendly and timed just right. Highly recommended.
Despite the dated decor, food was great! Certainly one of the better options in cottage country. Will return for sure.
Lovely dinner at the Norseman - the food was excellent and the restaurant has the feel of an old Muskoka resort. We will definitely go back and recommend to friends.
We dined in the screened porch (Muskoka room) with view of Walker Lake. The calamari was the best I've had. Servings were on the small side which left room for dessert.
Very nice experience overall.
Last minute reservation made super easily on the internet. Hopeful it would be decent meal with good atmosphere. Off the beaten track - will it be worth the drive? Quaint, friendly greeting and service and then phenomenal food. We will be back!
Anytime we visit near Huntsville, we always remember what wonderful choice of food is served at The Norseman. It was our third time visit there and we have not been disappointed at all. It was a homey atmosphere and not noisy at all, so made conversation easy. The service was well timed and we never felt rushed. Would definitely return again!
