The Nook Neighborhood Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We started off with clams where were very tasty but a little too salty. We then had a shrimp dish and lamb moussaka. The shrimp was OK the moussaka was so salty I couldn’t taste anything else but salt. The lamb might as well have been beef or pork I couldn’t taste it at all. There was very little meat and very little eggplant, it was mostly pasta which doesn’t even belong in moussaka. It was more of a lasagna than moussaka. I also had a mixed drink which was tasty but very small pour for the price. I am not one that usually minds a little extra cost for a good experience but that wasn’t the case which is the only reason I mention the cost. I have eaten here for brunch often and usually love the food but the chef this evening was going nuts with the salt and the moussaka wasn’t the right name for the dish. Not sure I will ever go back for dinner again.
We had a delightful family dinner to celebrate my husband's birthday. When we first sat down, I was a bit concerned they wouldn't keep my 6 year old happy with their cuisine, but we ordered the orange green tea jidori chicken (with no chiles) and some rice. She ate happily. My husband, my son, and I all ate our delicious meals, too. My husband and I both enjoyed a hand crafted soda/cocktail along side the tasty food. We had the mini cannoli for dessert and they were perfect. Thanks for a lovely evening and great meal.
Our AirBnB hosts recommended this and we’ve already made reservations for our second meal. Burrata special was enough to share and house made linguine was terrific. They were donating some of the proceeds from this special Puerto Rican dish to hurricane relief, but I’d order it any day regardless. Wine prices reasonable and folks at the next table loved their cocktails.
my mom and i were very happy to find this neighborhood bistro our first night in honolulu. it was everything we was hoping for. food was lovely, service was friendly and attentive, and they were very accommodating with my food intolerances. beautiful, fresh, local, sustainable ingredients prepared in creative ways, i'm certain we'll be going back there over and over again!
All entrees were great - Marscapone risotto, beets and chevre linguini, beef burger, sweet potato gnocchi, pasta special. Ordered a salad which can be shared - not an individual portion size, so order and share. Love that it is small and cozy and in our neighborhood. Also love that they have local beer from BeerLab. Kirsten, our server, was so delightful! She was upbeat, attentive, caring and funny. She made our meal very enjoyable! Good luck with your studies, Kirsten! We'd love to come back again.
Second time we have eaten at the Nook. Love the gnocchi and burger (our 2 favorite dishes we tried), and also great salads. Every dish we had was really creative and fresh, and had great flavors. Our least favorite was the linguine dish.
The staff, and especially the hostesses, are very friendly and helpful.
This is becoming one of our top "date night" places. It is a really nice place and great good, and our only "complaint" is the high wine prices that turn what could be an affordable date night into a pretty pricey dinner. Would love to see more value choices. But they have a good beer selection, so that, or the non-alcoholic drinks, could be an alternative to keep it affordable.
Came here with a date. Food was exceptional. My date had the seafood linguine special and I had the ostrich burger. Ostrich burger was super moist and cooked perfectly at a medium rare. Server was knowledgeable and proved quick service. Due to the location being small, there is a bit of noise from other tables. Would definitely come here again.
Food was really fantastic. We tried a few apps and both got pasta dishes. Highly recommend. Our server and the hostess were both very attentive and friendly. The wine I chose was nice but higher priced ($13 a glass) than I would except for a neighborhood spot. There were only 2, fairly high priced choices for reds. Wish they had more of a range of wines by the glass. But we will absolutely be back to try more of their dishes- a great find.
I cannot get enough of this place! The Nook is the first choice every time my girlfriend and I want a delicious meal that feels like home with the BEST mixed drinks. My usual is the black sesame old-fashion my lady like the juniper creation (i forget the menu name) we get the polenta fries with both sauces, seared pork, and gumbo. The first time we went, it was for breakfast and MAN that was a breath of fresh air from the usual breakfast available in Hawaii (we're Californian transplants) so we decided to try their other menus. This is such a wonderful establishment that is personable and friendly every time. Highly recommended, highly recommended. *nodding approvingly*
Our meals(s) were delicious. They were out of the clams, and so we had Orange Green Tea Chicken (which is Fried Jidori chicken, Sexpot green tea, fried garlic, chillies), which was quite tasty and large. We followed that with Asian Pear Salad (spinach, Ewa onions, honey candied pecans, miso vinaigrette), which was also very generously sized and excellent. We split both of these first tow courses, and there was more than enough for each of us. For the main course one of us had Glazed Duck Breast (Hibiscus cinnamon tea glaze, orange zest, sweet potato mash); The duck was superb, and so was the sweet potato, but we thought it might have been better to have something a little tarter than that. The other lucky person had the fish of the day (which was swordfish (we take it to have been Au) with a sauce that included kalmata olives and other good stuff. We had wine by the glass; the selection was limited, but just fine. It is NOT fancy, but for a moderately-priced evening it was way above what one can find most other places.
Date night for the boyfriend and I. We completely enjoyed our whole experience at The Nook. This is my 3rd time dining here. We had the steamed clam appetizer, the Mahi Mahi special and I had the kabocha pasta with mushrooms and a cream sauce. All items were amazing! Our server was awesome! I wish I could recall her name. She is super petite and friendly. (She was closing the night of August 5th. You know who you are! Thank you for being awesome!!) We tried North Coast PranQster beer before our main meal and were not all that impressed. Our waitress brought us a small sampler to share of 2 other beers and a cider. We really enjoyed the cider and went with that for the 2nd round of drinks. For dessert, we shared the mochi churro with Mexican chocolate. We could not have enjoyed ourselves more. Thanks, Nook staff! Keep up the good work. We gotta make it back for brunch sometime. :)
I love having breakfast at the Nook. This was my first dinner and probably the last. Their liquor license had expired so we missed out on drinks. Chicken bland, salad was good, steak smelled funny when it was being cooked. When we received it, it was very rare and cold. To their credit, it was comped. Hopefully, just a bad night for The Nook.
Cute little bistro hidden in Puck's Alley in Moiliili, we live in Manoa so it is a great find for us! We will be going back and bringing friends and family to enjoy the good food and great service! I am not a brunch person so I will be going there for dinner and cocktails!
Went with my wife and two kids for dinner. Worst clams ever, worst burger ever, terrible vegetables, terrible sauces, gross flavors on every plate. We were very hungry and barely ate anything. Even the homemade Italian soda was gross. Never going back despite the friendly service and cute ambiance. We were excited to eat here.
A truly fantastic menu with a perfect seasoning of the food. Solid, flavorful and filling! The service was friendly and excellent. Perfect ambience and a great music selection. One of the best meals I have had in a long time – we cannot wait to return! Yummy bravo!
In a BETTER LOCATION this restaurant would be a neighborhood gem given the excellent food and friendly/helpful staff. However, its current location is small and cramped into the corner of a parking lot. "Sitting outside" means sitting up against the busy parking lot.
I took my mom here for her birthday but also came here for a girls' night out and on a date with my boyfriend. I love The Nook! I think the best thing on the menu is the ostrich burger. It's a little expensive but worth it to try it once. The Nook has cool cocktails and a great happy hour menu, too. Very friendly staff, and close to campus so you get an interesting mix of clientele.
Overall, I was very satisfied with our dinner at the Nook. I was aware of their fine reputation for breakfast and since dinner service was new, they did not disappoint and made the transition very smooth and efficient. The Nook is literally a hidden gem since they are not visible from street view.
Small, welcoming restaurant. Local ingredients, creative drink menu. Polenta fries were unique and memorable. Service is attentive and special requests were honored with a smile. Only thing that needs adjusting is the too loud music level in the restaurant. I was there for dinner and would like to visit again for breakfast, which I have heard is outstanding.
Great dining experience. I enjoyed the Mint Lavender Drop. The Orange Green Tea Chicken was a nice appetizer. I liked the lightness of the breading and the sweet spicy flavors. Loved the Braised Pork Belly! Crispy outside and tender inside, great flavors with the spices. Loved the crisp kale with it and the Asian pear, both accompanied it nicely. Nice atmosphere and friendly helpful waitstaff.
