The News Room
Whether planning a casual gathering or a private dinner, The News Room offers a multiplicity of space to adapt easily to any event. Conveniently located on the Nicollet Mall strip in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, we are only steps away from many hotels, Orchestra Hall, and just a few blocks from The Target Center & Target Field, The Orpheum, Pantages and State Theaters.
Basically a sports bar with newspaper themed décor that has not worn well. Two cocktails, a shared cheese board (which was good), an indifferently prepared swordfish (also shared), and a crème brulee cost $100. The experience wasn't terrible but there are much better options for downtown Mpls dining.
Get-together with relatives passing through the town, including 2 in their 90s. Food and service was excellent. Requested quiet area, was pretty good most of evening but music was a bit loud the final 45 minutes. Server didn’t think speaker could be turned down just in our room. Also, some of our group commented that signage for the bathrooms was very confusing.
We sat outside and enjoyed the downtown Minneapolis vibe. The appetizers and entrees were great. Our waiter was fabulous. I would definitely recommend The News Room.
Had a quiet dining experience. Tuesday evening, and the restaurant was not very busy at 5pm. Food was good overall despite my filet being cooked more than it should have been (Ordered Medium, came out Medium Well). My spouse had the gnocchi which was very good. Drinks were spot on and our waiter was attentive to our anniversary. Good choice for our date night.
We went for a quick breakfast on a rainy Sunday morning. We were there early and enjoyed a quiet atmosphere as the crowd had yet to arrive. The coffee was excellent and the Eggs Florentine, with its bountiful helping of spinach and other vegetables, hit the spot for me. The breakfast menu isn't lengthy but it's what we were looking for. Service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive.
Not very busy service was slow. Food was good but expected a little bit more.
Terrible service. Waited a full hour for our meal, then they brought three of the four entrees — waited another 10 minutes to get the last meal, a SALAD.
Painfully slow service. Arrived with 2 kids and seated without kids menus. Took 20 minutes to just get drinks. Took another 40 to get food.
Attentive service, great atmosphere, amazing food!
It wasn’t too busy so the slow service was disappointing. Water/drinks were not refilled in a timely manner and the food was brought out at different times.
Awesome restaurant! The food and service were amazing!
Fantastic meal. Great waitstaff. Wonderful desserts. Overall - excellent!
Surrounded by large reproductions of historic news paper articles and headlines you encounter a lively crowd and attentive servers. The house specialty is fried Brie puffs with blueberry "catsup" which I recommend. It is lighter than expected, but could be shared. I advise against the chicken cordon blue which seemed to be a tasteless mash up of french toast stuffed with minced chicken meat, no ham, and an insipid sauce accompanied by overdone potato balls. While I appreciate new interpretations of classic dishes, this one needs rethinking. There is outside seating on the pedestrian mall, but note that buses pass and non-guest must walk amidst the tables to reach other destinations.
We were traveling for a business, and wanted to find a place for a nice evening meal for our team. We made a reservation for 8 and were given a fantastic table. The menu appealed to a broad range of tastes and preferences. Everyone on the team raved about this gem of a restaurant. Great variety of food, and the service and ambiance were great. The great part was the restaurant was not noisy so our team could visit easily. Really a wonderful experience. So glad we found this place!
We all had a great meal, drinks were fantastic. can't wait to go back
The location was convenient and the menu looked interesting so we thought we'd give it a try before a basketball game. Got there early and were seated in the back as there was not staff yet for the window tables. Strike one. Ordered cocktails, and asked if they could make a Poloma, "Sure, what kind of tequila do you want?" I chose a reposado, but was charged for a call Anejo $17.00 PLUS $2 for the grapefruit juice!!! I realize it's Minneapolis, but $18 for one cocktail is a bit much. Strike 2. My wife ordered a tequila old fashioned off the cocktail menu, no prices listed. It came to $12.92(?) We actually split an appetizer and a entree, The Meatloaf Flight. I could understand the smallish nature of the 3 meatloaf pieces, but there lack of flavor and the side of instant Mashed Potatoes are UNACCEPTABLE ANYWHERE! Strike 3!. Our total bill for splitting a meal and 2 cocktails was $84. Won't be back, way too many places in the city where at least if it is overpriced, the fresh ingredients and great flavors made it worth my while!
Disappointing after recommended by several people. Sad tiny salad with poor taste overall.
We were having dinner before going to Orchestra Hall for a concert. The four of us all enjoyed our entrees very much. Dessert was good too. The service was friendly and responsive. Only criticism would be that the alcoholic beverages and wine seemed expensive, but probably comparable to other restaurants in the downtown area.
Great server. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was delivered quickly.
Had John as our waiter, and who has been employed at The Newsroom for about a month, and he was excellent. Food was great and the staff made sure it got to us quickly as we were attending a concert that evening so needed to be in and out quickly.
The service was great. The food was excellent. It was a very good value.
The wings & hummus were great. Our server was super hard to pin down throughout the meal and it even took forever to get our check, even after the restaurant was mostly empty.
The waiter was very nice and pleasant, the food was ok not that great in my book. I’m not sure I would recommend the restaurant to any friends traveling to Minneapolis
This is a great place in Minneapolis. The cheese curds are excellent. I also had one of the best negronis ever. Their drinks are top notch. Very nice atmosphere.
Fun atmosphere, varied menu. Server was a little slow with drink orders, but food orders were fine
Excellent in all aspects.
All of our food was fabulous! Great presentation, amazing flavor, fabulous options. Also had a great watermelon sangria that was very refreshing for a hot day. Dessert was great too, but they ran out of creme brûlée, so that was a bummer! Took a while for our server to come back after we got our meals, for refills and such, but it was busy, so it happens.
Fun place to hang out. Reserved a table for 8 and we were well taken care of. Hamburger and the flat bread pizza was excellent’
Great decor, convenient location to theater district and sporting events. The service was awful! We were there during happy hour, waiter had 3 tables and could not give us the time of day. He was eude and short with attention. We found a hair in our food. $13 coxckails from a large list were not worth the price. They wanted to charge us a $20 cake cutting fee for a small dessert we brought in, we choose to eat it outside and leave.
Service was excellent. Our waitress and the other staff made sure that our group of 15 had our food brought out quickly, which isn’t always easy with a large group. Delicious food and a fun atmosphere!
The food here is good as is the service.
Yeah, it has kind of a sports bar vibe, but the service is always good and the food is reliably great!
The food was delicious. Portions are generous. You can easily take half home to eat later. Our table had the salmon almondine, build your own kobe burger, cordon bleu, and the forager burger. Each entrée was spectacular. Great place to meet with friends.
We had a party of 20, and the service was great, the food was amazing, and our dinner event was memorable.
It took nearly an hour for us to get our food. We ended up wolfing down half our food and taking the rest with us because we had to get back to work.
Fantastic wait staff bent over backwards to advise us about many food items, and to make us just plain happy with everything! Food was creative and delicious. Several of our group had Ahi salad with an avocado puree, and the just-right Ahi sparkled with oceanic freshness, just as fish served (correctly) mostly raw like Sushi, must. Beautiful to behold, even more beautiful to eat. We loved the warm bread and butter which might have been whipped with just a whiff of honey in it - super yum! Another of our party had the innovative yet comforting "flight of meatloaf", and it exuded urban vibes - not your Mother's meatloaf here, but 3 kinds of specially crafted meatloaf served with 3 different sides - that plate got scraped clean by my friend who savored every bite. All together, a nifty downtown Minneapolis restaurant on Nicollet Mall.
It was a long wait for our lunch. BLT was cold. Overall good experience.
The News Room was a hit! We had a wide range of ages and food tastes and all were very pleased with the menu choices and the food ordered. They have great tables for large groups.
Tasty appetizers & drinks, good service!
